If You've Considered Switching to Charter....

When I switched over to our current carrier I did so in part because they offered a package deal that was going to be less than what I currently paid. Logic Diodes can perform digital logic functions: AND, and OR. Diode logic was used in early digital computers. It only finds limited application today. Sometimes it is convenient to fashion a single logic gate from a few diodes. Diode AND gate An AND gate is shown in Figure above. Logic gates have inputs and an output (Y) which is a function of the inputs. The inputs to the gate are high (logic 1), say 10 V, or low, 0 V (logic 0). In the figure, the logic levels are generated by switches. If a switch is up, the input is effectively high (1). If the switch is down, it connects a diode cath

      Switching-Mode Power Supply Design Tutorial
A switching-mode power supply is a power supply that provides the power supply function through low loss components such as capacitors, inductors, and transformers -- and the use of switches that are in one of two states, on or off. The advantage is that the switch dissipates very little power in either of these two states and power conversion can be accomplished with minimal power loss, which equates to high efficiency. The term switchmode was widely used for this type of power supply until Motorola, Inc., who used the trademark SWITCHMODE TM for products aimed at the switching-mode power supply market, started to enforce their trademark. Then more generic terms had to be found. I started using the term switching-mode power supply to avoid infringing on the trademark. Others used the term

      VoIP: Packet Switching
A packet-switched phone network is the alternative to circuit switching. It works like this: While you're talking, the other party is listening, which means that only half of the connection is in use at any given time. Based on that, we can surmise that we could cut the file in half, down to about 4.7 MB, for efficiency. Plus, a significant amount of the time in most conversations is dead air -- for seconds at a time, neither party is talking. If we could remove these silent intervals, the file would be even smaller. Then, instead of sending a continuous stream of bytes (both silent and noisy), what if we sent just the packets of noisy bytes when you created them? VoIP phone users can make calls using their Internet connection. Data networks do not use circuit switching. Your Internet co

      VoIP: Circuit Switching
Existing phone systems are driven by a very reliable but somewhat inefficient method for connecting calls called circuit switching. Circuit switching is a very basic concept that has been used by telephone networks for more than 100 years. When a call is made between two parties, the connection is maintained for the duration of the call. Because you're connecting two points in both directions, the connection is called a circuit. This is the foundation of the Public Switched Telephone Network (PSTN). Your browser does not support JavaScript or it is disabled. Click "Play" to see how circuit switching works. Here's how a typical telephone call works: You pick up the receiver and listen for a dial tone. This lets you know that you have a connection to the local office of y

It always takes at least 4 weeks for my skin to adapt to the new cleanser and during that time, I have hell of a lot of trouble trying to keep the breakouts at bay. Suddenly the rest of the world fell away and the only thing that mattered was how I was going to get him in my life. He was chatting with a group of his friends around one of the displays in the Computers section of the Museum. I was looking up at him through the skylight on between Computers and the Palaeontology section. As he laughed at some joke I couldn't hear (and probably wouldn't have even if there hadn't been twenty feet of slightly musty Museum air between us) his hair caught the light, and he appeared as a merry angel, limned in a golden halo of auburn hair and burnished gold. I felt that rush again, so strong that I felt I would black out, and just stared fixedly up at him. Luckily, the area I was in, the early mammals, was not very popular, because had there been anyone to see me there I would have looked like I'd been struck dumb. As I s

I just saved $330 by switching to Geico
Yep, it is true, I just switched over to Geico and saved $330 per year on my car insurance. From what I have seen of Geico so far, they appear to be very promising. But, I don’t think the truth really comes out with insurance companies until you actually have a claim. I will let you know when/if that day comes. I was with AAA before and I was deliberately paying more than the average for the sake of convenience. I knew my agent well enough that I could email her or call her directly, rather than talking to a random agent, like I will likely have to do with Geico. I try to shop around once a year for insurance rates, and for whatever reason the price gap increased since last time I checked. For the same amount of coverage $330 was a bit too much to pay for my convenience. To add to that I haven’t had good experiences with AAA anyway, so I figured it was time to make the move.  If you haven’t shopped around in a while, you may be surprised&nbs

Right-click that icon, and select Option from the pop-up menu. At this point you’ll probably be prompted to register the program. Don’t worry, it is free - but it requires a registration. Use a throw-away email address and sign up via the Get Serial Number from www.docs.kr link in the pop-up. Paste the info that’s emailed to you into the appropriate fields. Save Time and Money by Switching to LED Christmas Lights
The holidays are here and Christmas is only a month away, but before you put up your Christmas lights make sure that you are using LED lights. These LED Christmas lights will help save you time and money, plus they are environmentally better than the old incandescent lights that people used to use. One place that sells a wide variety of different LED lights is HolidayLEDS, whose web site is holidayleds.com. Some of the main benefits of using LED lights over incandescent lights is that they use 90 percent less energy, are safer because they are cool to the touch, have a much longer life span and they are UL and Energy Star approved. When I first installed Ubuntu it was quick and painless, but upon a re-install on a dual boot machine the installer would infinitely stick on the account migration. If this happens to you, you’ll need to reboot from the CD, log into the terminal, then run the installer without the Migration Assistant: user@localhost:~$ ubiquity –migration-assistant

      Switching Servers
[edit Nov. 8, 2007] OK. Looks like the servers have adjusted. Business as usual. [/edit] Hell’s Handmaiden is switching servers. The site is going to LaughingSquid– more on them later– because the site owner is damned frustrated with his current host– more on them later as well. While the DNS servers are adjusting, I won’t be putting up any new posts as I don’t want to worry about synchronizing two databases. Things should be settled by about mid-week.

Switching to CFL (compact fluorescent lamp)
According to Wikipedia: "A compact fluorescent lamp (CFL), also known as a compact fluorescent light bulb is a type of fluorescent lamp designed to replace an incandescent lamp. Many CFLs can fit in the existing incandescent light fixtures."An interesting article I read today mentioned the following facts:1. CFL's take up to 70%-80% less electricity compared to incandescent lamps.2. CFL's living span is up to 6 to 10 times that of an incandescent lamp.3. 11w of CFL power is equal to 60w of incandescent lamp power.4. Changing 10 lamps to CFL's will result in a yearly saving of up to 150$.5. Most of the power in an incandescent lamp is wasted on heat not light.6. California will soon ban the use of incandescent lamps. In Europe a similar law is currently drafted and in Australia the use of these lamps will be banned by 2010.A classic win win situation in my opinion.

Cards and Ravens Playing with Fire Switching Up QB’s
Both the Arizona Cardinals and Baltimore Ravens appear on the verge of playing with fire, as both teams head coaches are talking about trying the dreaded platoon situation at quarterback.  Both teams situations are vastly different, but nevertheless, trying to play two quarterbacks in the National Football League is like waking a sleeping dog - it usually leads to disaster.  The Ravens are a team that has a window to win a championship, and tinkering with the offense now is a mistake.  In Arizona, trying to sit what is supposed to be your franchise QB might help short-term, but hurt you down the road.  Ravens head coach Brian Billick spoke Monday about playing backup Kyle Boller more late in games, sort of like a relief pitcher coming in for the save.  What impressed Billick was Boller moving the Ravens down the field for the game-winning field goal vs Arizona on Sunday and his poise.  Sure Boller has been impressive over his relief duties and even late last season, but there

Switching from Rails back to PHP?
This post is a response to Derek Siver’s post on the O’Reilly blog. Over two years ago, he decided to ditch a hundred thousand lines of messy PHP code in favor of rewriting his whole site with Ruby on Rails. Two years later, he isn’t even half done and has decided to go back to PHP. Just two months with PHP again and the project is complete. He gives seven reasons of why he switched back to PHP after 2 years of unsuccessfully. I agree with some but not others. Here are his 7 reasons, you can read them in more detail on the original post. “Is there anything Rails/Ruby can do that PHP can’t do? … (thinking)… NO.” Our entire company’s stuff was in PHP: Don’t underestimate integration. Don’t want what I don’t need. It’s small and fast. It’s built to my tastes. I love SQL. Programming languages are like girlfriends: The new one is better because *YOU* are better. And Nice Circuit for power user. _______________________________ By Manfred Mornhinweg, XQ2FOD This article was originally published (in a slightly modified form) in the QST magazine, December 1998 and January 1999, and in the Radio Amateur’s Handbook, 1999. Visit the American Radio Relay League for information on these publications, and a world of ham radio related things! Design decisions There are several different topologies for switchers in common use, and the first decision a designer must take is which of them to consider. Among the factors affecting the decision are the power level, the number of outputs needed, the range of input voltage to be accepted, the desired tradeoff between complexity, quality and cost, and many more. For this power supply I decided to use the half bridge forward converter design. This topology connects the power transformer to a bridge form

      Switching Hosts
I apologize for the downtime that the site has been experiencing over the past few days. Daily Gaming News has been on the edge of outgrowing the small shared server it was hosted on for a few months now, and the Metallica article posted this past Tuesday pushed things over the edge. Visitors from Digg, angry video gamers, and Metallica lovers and haters alike flooded into the site and caused a sharp spike on the DGN server that our hosting company didn't appreciate. Then I accidentally broke the site when I was trying to move the site to the new server. Whoops. I'll have more on the saga of the great DGN Metallica outage when I get my blog up and running on the new server. I've moved everything to a hosting company that has more robust servers, far better customer support, and the ability to survive the digg frontpage without any trouble. Be sure to check back next Tuesday for new articles.

      MJ2955 Switching Power Supply 12V 10Amp
The switching power supply provides 12 volts, at 10 amps, maximum, using a discrete transistor regulator with an op-amp functioning as a comparator in the feedback circuit. With reference to the schematic, the front panel power-on light is not shown. There is no adjustable current limiter in this unit, although R1, R2, R3, Q2, R8, R9, C5 and Q4 set the current limit to approximately 10 amps. As you can see, the design is very similar to that of a linear power supply, except that L1, and D1 have been added, and U1 operates in a switching mode as a comparator with a small amount of hystersis. The switching frequency of this unit varies with the output current drawn by the load. This is an undesireable feature, which is why PWM regulators are used today. With a PWM regulator, the switching frequency is constant and will produce spurs only at known discrete frequencies rather than spurs at all frequencies. The Darlington-connected pass transistor block in the schematic is there twice (in
