In celebration of the release of the new "Sweeney Todd" movie with Johnny Depp and Helena Bonham Carter, I thought I'd put some more theater history on here and show a clip from Angela Lansbury's incredible performance as "Nellie Lovett" in the Broadway production of "Sweeney Todd." So, this post is about a new Johnny Depp movie called Sweeney Todd
The best I can tell from looking around the site is that this is a cross between The Count of Monte Cristo [I like the one w/Gerrard Depardeau best!] and Fried Green Tomatoes annd Edward Scissorhands.
Just read the first synopsis of the tale and you have the man who is set up and sent to prison just because it will best suit the situation of the person sending him there. Then you have, um…*ahem*… the mysterious “meat pies” which are WAY too reminiscent of the phenomenal BBQ served in Idge Threadgoode’s Whistle Stop Cafe. *heh* (I love that movie, btw!) And it reminds you of Edward because of, well… you’ll see the connection immediately without any help from me. *heh*
Oh and I have to tell you that both Sweeney Todd and Scissorhands are Tim Burton films! Of course there’s a connection!
But the main scheme of this movie is revenge. If you’ve read or watched

When it comes to anything related to Tim Burton’s work we can generally expect something dark and a bit weird, but also with a strange sense of humor to it. This poster for Sweeney Todd mostly lacks any humor at all. But otherwise it fits. It’s very dark, not only in it’s color but also in the mood it transmits, with the few splashes of blood red making it especially creepy. And it looks quite weird, both in the visual style which makes the image look like a very realistic drawing and in the choice of setting and of “camera angle”.
Johnny Depp gets prominent placement in the poster, which is to be expected. After all he plays the title character and is the main draw in the film, from a marketing perspective. And I have to say, his expression adds a lot to the poster. Even in a still he is still able to transmit so much with his face. Impressive.

It was the first official day of Comic-Con 2007 and they had something special to show us from the start, and that is the official movie poster of Tim Burton’s Sweeney Todd. This movie has so much hype surrounding it, mostly because Johnny Depp will be singing in it.
It is hard to say what the movie will be like, but with Tim and Johnny teaming up once more it is sure to be something special. Judging by the movie poster, Sweeney Todd could very well be Burton’s best work yet.
