The other day I received a mail with the contents “thought I'd recommend something, instead of J.A.”, so it certainly seems like out Spanish friend has build himself quite a reputation! Deservedly so, I should add.In the mail were links for a few songs by Swedish indie pop artist/singer-/songwriter Staphan O’Bell, which turned out to be really likeable ones, sounding pretty much like Bob Dylan on a musical exchange trip to Gothenburg. Does this description make any sense? If not – imagine a singer-/songwriter playing those catchy indie pop tunes that always seem to find their way out of the Swedish indie pop capital? Was that a better one? No! Then check them out and describe the songs yourself! They are lovely and definitely worth a listen!+ Just Like Me+ Fashion Street+ I'm OK

Swedish Embassy in Syria Accused of Taking Bribes From Iraqi Refugees
AINA - Iraqi asylum seekers in Syria have been tricked into believing that they can bribe their way to a better place in line in the queue to the Swedish embassy. The first time I came across these falsifications, was when Marie-Jeanette Löfgren and I produced two documentaries for the program Kaliber on SR (the Swedish state owned radio station). Already on the second day after we landed in Syria, September 2007, I asked Chatarina Kipp, the Swedish ambassador in Syrian's capital city Damascus, if she had heard of the bribes. She dismissed it as rumour and hearsay. Yet a translator who has the pavement outside of the Swedish embassy as his office, claimed that it is true and that I only needed to sit with him for an hour before some of the Iraqis, who were extremely frustrated, would tell

The Knork revisited - here are two Swedish examples.
After our post on the knork the other day, Smart Stuff reader Peter K mailed us to remind us that there are at least a couple of Swedish takes on the knife/fork combo. There's the classic hot dog stand fork (left) that has been developed and manufactured by Merplast in Ängelholm since the 60s. The hot dog fork has a serrated edge, but as far as we know it only really works for right-handed people. Peter K also says that a Knork is pretty similar to a pastry fork. And he's got a point, there. We have not been able to find a representative pastry fork, but we have a picture of the Gense hors d'oeuvre fork that looks like it has knife edges on the sides. Thanks to Peter for the mails!

Protein that could fight obesity discovered by Swedish researchers
STOCKHOLM — Researchers in Sweden have discovered a protein that stimulates the formation of fat cells, a finding that could potentially be used to treat obesity, the Karolinska Institute said Wednesday.   The protein, called TRAP (tartrate-resistant acid phosphatase), "stimulates the formation of new fat cells and can thus precipitate the development of obesity," the Institute said in a statement. The research was based on cell cultures and mice studies, and showed that patients with obesity have excessive levels of the protein. "This protein is potentially useful in the treatment of conditions involving morbid cachexia (weight loss), such as cancer diseases," professor Goeran Andersson, who led the study, said. "The discovery can also lead to new ways

Swedish Christmas Cookies - A Recipe To Make Pepparkakor
Christmas is a special time in Scandinavia and Sweden in particular. Tradition and Heritage are extremely important to Swedish culture and there are many traditions which are widely upheld. In most traditional Swedish homes, the smell of home baked foods and desserts fill the air at Christmas time. The Swedes really love to cook and for many, the holiday season and the Christmas Eve celebration is the highlight of their year. One recipe, which is very popular in Sweden, is for a cookie called the Pepparkakor.Pepparkakor, literally translated, means "pepper cookies" but I've yet to see a recipe that included any pepper. They are similar to the American gingersnap cookie but they are generally thinner, crisper and smoother in texture. Many refer to this cookie as a "ginger thin" and they are commonly called "gingernuts" in the United Kingdom. Besides their great taste, pepparkakor cookies are used as Christmas decorations as well. They are frequently shaped like little men or women, pigs,

      Swedish Health Care Scare
Today I’m going to tell you what I think of the Swedish health care nowadays. A sad subject unfortunately. I’ll give you some examples (of many!) from around my own social sphere, so this is completely true. Considering the fact that Sweden is supposed to be such a high educated and wealthy country (not any longer), interested and concerned about health care, it’s unbelievable how our public health care system has grown to become so bad functioning, not efficient and none caring. Especially since we tax payers are paying so much tax: about 32% of our salaries in tax, depending on how high income we have and where we live. If you have a high income, you’re even paying more than 32% in tax. The whole Swedish health care system is built up for the public. There isn’t enough private hospitals or private doctors as an alternative as you may see in other countries. With minor sickness we’re ordered to go to the district health care center, which nowadays

Burning the Swedish flag - or so they thought.
Sweden (along with all other civilized countries) subscribes to the principle of free speech and free press. This means that you're allowed to speak your mind without risking persecution for doing so. A concept far beyond the grasp of the bunch of wankers above. Education can't be a big issue among devout muslims, either. Limiting schooling to learning to recite from the holy book, rather than studying science, is not actually working, as can be judged from the number of muslim Nobel Prize winners. Or by the "Swedish" flag in the picture above. When a bunch of muslim bigots such as these in Lahore, Pakistan, show their contempt for the cornerstones of democracy, I couldn't care less. It's when another bunch of muslim bigots just like them do the same thing in Örebro that I start to worry. Sweden is a democracy with free speech and a free press. Even for muslims, who have the right to protest if they feel insulted. That much they have managed to understand. But freedom of speech m

The book was first published in 1931, and is written by Belgian Hergé (Georges Remi) who had never visited the Congo or Africa. It naturally reflects the 1920s and 1930s look on blacks and Africa. To demand its banishment and removal from bookstores and libraries is not only offensive to our idea of freedom of speech, it also projects a less than flattering light on Kitimbwa Sabuni. He should know that freedom of speech is fundamental in any civilized society, and it protects anyone's right to express opinions that anyone el

Swedish art exhibition censored for fear of muslims.
A curator for an art exhibition in the Swedish province of Värmland, Märta Wennerström, has decided to remove three drawings by well-known Swedish artist Lars Vilks. The reason? Well, to put it short and blunt, Ms. Wennerström was afraid the works would enrage muslims in Sweden and abroad. After the fuss about the Danish Muhammed cartoons a while back, Swedish authorities and officials at every level have become very anxious not to displease the muslim community for fear of demonstrations, death-threats or worse. The fear of the predictable muslim over-reactions is clear and present at all levels. It makes me think of Germany in the twenties and thirties, where Hitler's nazis, although quite a small minority, through the ruthlessness of their SA-troops intimidated the German majority into submission and silence as they destroyed Jewish property and beat up and killed German Jews and socialists in the streets. The German government at the time was weak and the democratic authoritie

      The No-Bake Swedish Chocolate Balls
Allhallowtide. The kids have a school break this week. I suppose they have had Halloween parties with loads of sweets. One of the first things small Swedish children learn to make are chocolate balls. There are different ways to make chocolate balls. For instance, there is no need to melt the butter first. Softened butter works well. The chocolate balls can also be rolled in chocolate sprinkles, sesame seeds, finely chopped almonds or nuts just as well as coconut flakes. I like the taste of coconut best of all. This is my favorite - a no-bake child recipe which is super easy.INGREDIENTS:25 - 30* 100 g butter* 1 dl (100 ml) sugar* 1 tablespoon vanilla sugar* 3 tablespoons cocoa powder* 3 dl (300 ml) rolled oats (porridge oats)* 3 tablespoons cold strong coffeeGARNISH:Coconut flakesMETHOD:1. Melt butter in a saucepan, let it simmer on low heat for ab. 30 seconds.2. Mix sugar, vanilla, cocoa, oats, coffee, and butter.3. Put the batter into the refrigerator for 1 - 2 hours.4. Place coconut f

      A Swedish Herring Sandwich Recipe
Last Sunday I bought plenty of fish from a fishmonger who usually comes to my village once every two months to sell fresh shellfish and saltwater fish.I purchased fillets of 'strömming'. (The Latin name is Clupea harengus membras).'Strömming' is the Swedish name for a small, iridescent glossy food fish of the herring family. Sometimes it is also called Silver of the Sea. They swim in vast shoals, filtering plankton out of the water with their gill rakers as they move. They also form the staple food of cod and haddock, for instance. The concentration of dioxin in this fish is higher than the prescribed EU maximum, which has led to dietary restrictions. However, it is very high in healthy long-chain Omega 3 fatty acids. So, it is a balance between the harm and health benefits of this fish.Eating fried 'strömming', potato mash and grated carrots now and then does not harm me. I do not belong to any of the risk groups. It is a good idea to fry more than needed for one dinner and the

Swedish documentary follows "regular" Europeans who turn to jihad
Why do young men, who have grown up in the safe bosom of Scandinavia, want to sacrifice their lives for Allah? That is the question posed by a Swedish documentary that provides a glimpse into the world of young European Muslims who dedicate themselves to jihad, or holy war.Aching Heart is the story of two young Swedes with immigrant backgrounds - one from Ostermalm, one of Stockholm's poshest neighborhoods, and one from Kvanum, a tiny town in central Sweden - who left their homes in the 1990s to seek martyrdom in the wars of Chechnya and Bosnia and Herzegovina. But most of the focus of the film is on Göteborg, Sweden's second-biggest city. This is where Mirsad Bektasevic grew up. The 20-year-old Swede with Bosnian roots was given an eight-year sentence in Sarajevo this summer for planning a suicide attack there in 2005.The opening scene of Aching Heart is a video found with Bektasevic when he was arrested: Two balaclava-clad men show off a stash of weapons, including hand grenades an

      Swedish cookie time
I know this may sound crazy, but chocolate chip cookies are over rated. While I do enjoy them, I think that most people just make the because they don’t appreciate the huge number of cookies that are out there. Take for example this example above. These cookies are called Spritz Rings. My pastry teacher, a proud Swede, writes that no cookie platter would be complete (in Sweden) without these cookies. It’s not hard to figure out why, either; these cookies are buttery, crispy, and delicious. Topping it all off, they use a minimal amount of ingredients and are easily piped into any shape you desire. These cookies used the same exact recipe as above but were piped into figure-eight patterns and filled with jam. Same buttery, crunchy goodness, now with more jam! Who doesn’t like cookies and jam? That’s what I though. These last beauties are called Cocoa Cuts. Everyone should know how to make these cookies. Throw a few ingredients in the mixer, form into a long dow

llustrious Swedish dance music producer Tiger Stripes (aka DMalicious, aka 12th Floor) brings his own brand of boogie to the dance floor with “Safari”
Having done at least two EP’s for King Street/Nite Grooves, we couldn’t help but ask him to grace us all with a debut full-length album. What he turned out was an unparalleled 73-plus minute CD containing a mostly instrumental mixture of dark yet unobtrusive tech, Latin-infused, jazzy riffs, pumping basslines, disco-stringed, pure head-nodding percussion, soulfully [...]

Mo Toon Update: Turkish Hackers Target Swedish Websites
Lady Vorzheva of Spanish Pundit has an update on the mo dog controversy. Nigeria killings and Turkish hackers I wrote about the Mo-dog cartoon before. Over the last three weeks, Turkish hackers have been attacking Swedish websites (more than 5000) and in some they have leaved messages blaming the Mo-dog cartoon: Turkish hackers have attacked more than 5,000 Swedish Web sites in the past week, and at least some of the sabotage appears linked to a Swedish newspaper’s publication of a disparaging caricature of Islam’s prophet. Go read it all. I had only learned of Michelle Malkin’s Mohammed Cartoon Blogburst last week. I suppose this is as good as a time as any to post it, as it will compliment Lady V’s story nicely. H/T 1389 “Join The Mohammed Cartoon Blogburst - Learn Why it’s Still So Important” THE MOHAMMED CARTOON BLOGBURST Ok. Let’s do it. If you’ve posted some or all of the forbidden Mohammed cartoons on your blog in support of Denmark and
