Police in western Pennsylvania are investigating a Nazi symbol that was spray-painted on a campaign sign for Sen. Barack Obama, The Media reported Monday. The swastika was discovered on a placard for Obama in the yard of a couple in Indiana County, Pa., police said. Kamal Youssef and his wife, Maria, told officers that when they went outside Saturday they found the defaced poster. Youssef, 86, moved to the United States from Egypt, and he became a citizen in 1958. His wife, an immigrant from Czechoslovakia, is also a U.S. citizen, AP reports. Police say this is an isolated incident. Obama and Sen. Hillary are campaigning in Pennsylvania, where the next large primary will be held on April 22. Clinton is leading in the Keystone State by a significant margin, according to some polls.

One of the first odd finds that we posted on Google Earth Hacks back in mid-2005 was a building in California that was shaped like a Swastika. Since that time, it’s been downloaded from GEH over 8,000 times. The same image on Flickr has been viewed over 16,000 times.
Chris Smith at the Natural Search Blog did some research into the building and found that is a Navy building, unintentionally built in that shape, because no one then expected millions of people to be able to view it from above.
CNN reported on the building today and included one new detail: The Navy has taken so much grief for the building that they’re going to spend about $600,000 to add landscaping and structures to make it look different from above.
As Chris says, while more and more companies are looking into rooftop advertising this is the first case of a building being modified just to improve PR.
I came across two articles at Reuters and the Daily Mail while scouring the internet yesterday that talked about Spanish fashion brand Zara withdrawing a “swastika” bag from their stores. This piqued my interest, so I went to look up the bag in question.
Here is the picture of the GBP39 bag, and there on the side, is the swastika symbol in green.
Here in Asia where Hinduism and Buddhism are widely practiced, the swastika symbol is less controversial, because it is an ancient symbol that is present in both culture and religion. However, I can understand why it is causing an uproar in Europe which went through the Holocaust under Hitler, who had adopted the swastika as the symbol of the Nazis. There, it is a symbol of oppression and fear.
When Zara commissioned this bag, they were either oblivious to the symbol or had let it slip past unnoticed or maybe it was to court controversy. Who’s to know how the minds of these marketing moghuls work?
