I watched the first episode of Survivors late night on TV Replay. It occurred to me that that much of the weekend schedule is made of modernised replays, with even this series scripted from a 1970s drama of the same name, updated for cellphones and the interweb. Survivors is about an apocalyptic pandemic flu virus and the stories of a few with immunity. I'm guessing that the first episode has trac

Long-term survivors of adult cancers are almost twice as likely to report psychological distress severe enough to cause moderate to serious problems functioning in social, work or school situations, compared to the general population, according to a large, national study presented September 24, 2008, at the American Society for Therapeutic Radiology and Oncology's 50th Annual Meeting in Boston. Two recent events got me thinking. The first was the news of Senator Kennedy’s diagnosis of brain tumor and its early treatment. The second was the CINN Foundation brain tumor walk (Strides to [...]
People caught up in terrorist attacks or natural disasters are more resilient, both as individuals and in groups, than previously thought. Cancer survivors have gone through a lot of allopathic treatments, many of them involving drug therapy. As the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) works to close the last trailer parks that many Gulf-area hurricane survivors call home this weekend, the findings of a new study suggest that displacement affects survivors' mental health. More than half of the study participants reported significant long-term mental health distress, even as they moved back to their original communities. These fin

The Pope's impromptu planned visit last week with victims of clergy sexual abuse has been widely reported. In a New York Times report on April 16 entitled, "Abuse Victims Not Placated by Pope", Becky Ianni, a 50-year-old abuse victim said,
“He talks about feeling shame for the scandal but it’s a far cry from the shame that victims have had to live with our entire lives. We don’t really need his sense of shame."
She's right, of course. Yet many news outlets reported all week that the Pope visited with the "survivors", not the "victims." It seems to me that calling the victims "survivors", even though they truly are, softens the terrible act and does more to add to the shame that Ms. Ianni and so many others do note need to endure.Shame on the news media. Life assurance is insurance protection purchased in which the insured individual’s death results in payout of benefiting to survivors identified as beneficiaries of the policy. There are several types of life insurance, but the most common is term life insurance or coverage. Term insurance provides for payout of a lump sum upon death of the insured during the specified term of the insurance. Other types of life assurance include mortgage protection. With this type, the insurer pays of the balance of the covered individual’s mortgage in the event death occurs during the covered period and fits within the stated payment parameters. Although more costly to obtain, there are some insurance policies available to individuals struggling with certain illnesses or health situations. Terms of co

One of the ways in which we can support trauma
survivors is to provide a holding environment for them as they recover.
At some point survivors need to make a conscious
decision to heal. Initially, all they can do is suffer or run away from the
feelings elicited by the trauma. Often they feel as if they are being defined by
what has happened to them. The trauma and its aftermath is all-consuming.
Over time, however, the other parts of their
lives begin to clamor for attention, and survivors are in a place to contemplate
moving through the trauma into healing. They can decide whether they’re going to
be defined by their trauma or whether they’re going to allow this to become part
of their history and then create a different definition of who they are. But I
think that takes a conscious choice. Someone has to decide, “I want to learn how
to live again and not just exist.”
A search team hunted on Saturday for survivors or victims of an Indonesian ferry that sank off Sulawesi island this week but it remained unknown how many people were missing, officials said.At least 31 people were killed after passengers climbed to the roof of the 22-metre (-yard) Acita 03 seeking a better cell phone signal as it approached the coast, causing it to capsize on Thursday evening. The wooden boat had been heading from Tomea island to Bau Bau on Buton island, about 1,500 kilometres (930 miles) northeast of Indonesia's capital, Jakarta.Media reports said 125 people were rescued following the accident that occurred just a few miles from Bau Bau. One of the best ways to support people going
through a traumatic experience is to tune into being in the same space with
them.
We need to work very hard to take out own biases
out the picture and just be willing to listen to where someone is coming from;
not make assumptions about how they are going to be; not project our own stuff
onto them.
We need to just sit with people. One of the most
important gifts we can give someone is the willingness to sit with them in their
pain.
England, Spain, Portugal, Russia, Denmark, Sweden--doesn't sound like the itinerary of a cancer "victim," does it? But Lorna Goldstein, one of the 10 breast cancer survivors whose stories appear here, has been to all those places recently, traveling with her globe-trotting husband just as she did in years past. And, diagnosed with metastatic, recurring breast cancer, followed by unrelated uterine cancer, she has had bouts with cancer three times, twice within six months. "Have cancer, will travel" summarizes her upbeat, can-do attitude. Despite the rigors of testing, biopsies, diagnoses, treatments, pain, medication, surgeries, anxieties, hospital stays, nausea, and more, she enjoys health, energy, and a pain-free life that includes painting and piano playing. Neither Goldstein nor any of the other contributors, whose ages span 25 years and whose stages of cancer range from 0 to 4, minimizes the harsh realities, and all bring admirable strength of spirit to bear on their situation, wh
The very thought of trying to find life insurance for someone who has had prostate cancer would send 98% of life insurance agents screaming into the dark. Most would just tell you, without asking any questions, that you are uninsurable.
About 80% of prostate cancer cases are not only insurable, but insurable at rates that someone with no cancer history would be happy with. If you want to win the prize there are three things that your agent should ask for and you need to be able to provide. If the agent doesn’t ask for these things, get another agent.
1. You need to know what the doctor found when you were diagnosed! Their first indication was probably an elevated PSA ( prostate specific antigen). You need to know what that was at the time of diagnosis. From there they would have done a biopsy. From the biopsy they would have determined a stage and grade of the cancer. The stage would be somewhere between A-D. It could be like A2. The grade, also known as the Gleason score would
Here is a press release issued last week from the Senate office of Chuck Hagel:Hagel Introduces Veterans and Survivors Employment and Training ActMay 3rd, 2007 - WASHINGTON, D.C. - U.S. Senators Chuck Hagel (R-NE) and Jack Reed (D-RI) today introduced the “Veterans and Survivors Employment and Training Act of 2007.” This legislation would make school more affordable to veterans, survivors, and dependents pursuing an education in high tech fields. The bill would expand the education programs that are eligible for accelerated payments under the Montgomery GI Bill, and provide the benefit to recipients of the Survivors’ and Dependents Educational Assistance Program (SDEAP).“America’s service men and women make tremendous sacrifices in service to our country. As policymakers, we have an obligation to ensure they have the resources they need to pursue their education. This legislation will make it easier for veterans, and the families of veterans killed or permanently disabled in
Nairobi, May 8 (IANS) Rescue workers have given up all hopes of finding any survivors of the Kenya Airways plane that crashed into a swamp near the Cameroonian capital Douala.
The airliner - bound for Kenyan capital Nairobi from Douala - went down early Saturday in southern Cameroon with 114 people aboard, including 15 Indians.
The wreckage was found 36 hours after the plane vanished from radar screens.
Rescue workers at the site - a mangrove swamp - said there were no signs of any survivors.
On Monday, 40 bodies were pulled out of the wreckage of flight KQ 507. The badly mutilated and decomposing bodies were packed in body bags and taken to the Douala military mortuary to allow families to identify them, the Nation newspaper reported.
A Cameroonian official in charge of recovery efforts said he had surveyed the entire site - covering only a few hundred yards in diameter - and no one had survived.

Czech Cold War survivors on front lineBy Gethin Chamberlain in Trocavec, Czech Republic, Sunday TelegraphLast Updated: 12:25am GMT 18/02/2007They made it through one cold war on the side of the Soviet Union, but now the people of the Czech Republic have been thrust back on to the front line of a new nuclear stand-off - this time on the side of the West.Jan Neoral, mayor of Trocavec, at the former Soviet military base: ‘We are afraid of terrorists’America wants to site the radar base for its new anti-missile defence system, aimed at containing the threat from states such as Iran and North Korea, in an old Soviet-era base less than 40 miles from the Czech capital, Prague. But the hi-tech plan - dubbed "Son of Star Wars" in a nod to Ronald Reagan's original Strategic Defence Initiative - has caused consternation in the neighbouring rural villages, where facilities are so basic that many people have to draw water from the wells outside their homes in buckets. It is not just the prospec
