Many first-time buyers of Housing Board flats are treating the balloting system for new units as a chance to strike the lottery. Trade surplus likely to exceed $250b this year
(Agencies) Updated: 2007-10-17 16:53 China’s 2007 trade surplus is likely to exceed 250 billion dollars while consumer inflation was likely to top four percent, said a central bank official. “The major problems China’s economy is facing include overly rapid growth in investment and loan and a too-large trade surplus,” the Shanghai Securities News reported, citing Yi Gang, assistant governor of the central bank. “To tackle the problems, we cannot solely rely on adjustments of the exchange rate,” Yi said. The United States and other nations argue China’s yuan currency is being kept undervalued, giving Chinese exporters an unfair advantage. China posted a trade surplus of 185.7 billion dollars for the first nine months of the year, more than the record 177.5 billion dollars for the whole 2006, according to official figures released last week. Surplus further pushes Canadian dollar
Canada has successfully lowered its debt, balanced its budget, kept its trade surplus up, kept interest rates up and looking to further raise them… Exactly what every other G-7 country has been unable to do. Meanwhile the Canadian economy is stably strolling along, and the Canadian loonie has been very strong. The federal government today announced a larger-than-expected surplus in the Canadian economy. This announcement, along with a weak U.S. home sales report, resulted in a further push on the Canadian dollar. The loonie rose higher than the U.S. dollar earlier in the session, but closed at 99.86-cents (up from yesterday’s finish of 99.58-cents). The surplus is estimated to have raised to $14-billion in the last fiscal year, versus the original $9.2-billion forecast. The Canadian dollar rose on expectations that the surplus would lead to further tax-cuts. I actually sense some reason for concern now… With the Canadian dollar being so high, retailers are not acti

Dubai to witness a surplus of mega malls
According to real estate developer Nakheel, the mega malls at Dubai is almost nearing capacity and there is an increased need for diversity in shopping concepts. The CEO of Nakheel Retail, David Thurling, who is also behind the development of projects such as the Ibn Battuta Mall, is of the opinion that it is high time the local developers focused on new shopping concepts such as town center style shopping zones, factory outlets, and retail outlets and themed malls that link to main transport hubs. Even retail zones that are linked to metro stations, malls with focus on entertainment zones or shopping centers with a character or historical period theme are the other options that could be considered. While speaking to delegates at the Dubai Retail City trade show, he said "The challenge for us in the industry is to think outside the square and to look at mall design in a different way for it to be competitive and offer something new in the market."He added, that from a Nakheel point of vi

China's Trade Surplus Doubles, Adding U.S. Friction
From BloombergApril 10 (Bloomberg) -- China's trade surplus almost doubled in the first quarter, adding to friction as the U.S. takes complaints against its second-largest trading partner to the World Trade Organization. The surplus widened to $46.4 billion from $23.3 billion a year earlier, the customs bureau said on its Web site today. The March gap was $6.87 billion, smaller than economists expected. The U.S. yesterday announced plans to file two cases at the WTO alleging failure to curb copyright violations, 10 days after imposing duties on imports of Chinese coated paper. U.S. lawmakers say China uses an undervalued currency and subsidies to help spur the nation's booming exports of textiles, electronics and toys.``The bulging surplus will intensify trade friction and protectionist initiatives against Chinese exports, especially in the U.S. and Europe,'' said Wang Qian, an economist at JPMorgan Chase & Co. in Hong Kong. ``It will also strengthen the pressure for further apprecia

Sony and Vivid Ink Deal to Use Surplus UMDs for Porn Distribution
Sony and Vivid Entertainment inked a deal earlier today that will allow Vivid to use surplus Universal Movie Discs for the Playstation Portable video game system to distribute their porn titles, a desperate move that Sony hopes will save their slowly failing PSP line by bringing it to the new and untapped market of desperate porn addicts. Daily Gaming was unable to learn specifics of the deal, although sources within both porn and video game industry indicate that a large sum of money changed hands. The deal is expected to bring much needed attention to the flagging Playstation Portable, or PSP. The system debuted to strong sales and was the must have item amongst gamers for the first few weeks after launch, but the lack of interesting games coupled with draconian firmware updates that punished the nascent homebrew scene quickly dried up the market. Real gamers in the portable market have long since moved on to the Nintendo DS, which focuses on pushing games rather than expe

Bob's Surplus Store Displayscratchboard giclee on canvas 20" x 24" $95This is a store display of a real old truck from an old fashioned hunting/fishing general store in town that called out to me. I love antique cars and trucks. In my scratchboard drawing I made the atmosphere around it one of reverence. After all, this old timer vehicle has survived a long time and deserves respect.

Time to Decrease the Surplus Population
‘Twas a very pleasant 80-degree December in Florida evening last night. The children were nestled all snug in their beds, so I was strolling around my front yard smoking a cigar and admiring my Christmas lights, when what to my wondering eyes should appear? One of my neighbors approaching in his car with something giving luster to his broad face and huge round belly that couldn’t shake like a bowl full of jelly because it was jammed up tight against the steering wheel. As he drove by, I noticed the source of the glow and I laughed when I saw it, in spite of myself. He has a flip down DVD monitor like lots of folks do, but is it installed in line with the front seats to be viewed by rear-seat passengers? Hell no. It’s installed directly behind the moron’s rear view mirror so he can see it. Some states have laws against using cell phones while driving and yet this jolly old elf is watching a movie. I’m not sure if he heard me exclaim as he drove out of sight

Buffalo's Budget Surplus Largest in History
It is good news that Buffalo ended the 2005-06 budget year with a $56.1 million surplus.  The wolves are already licking their chops while trying to come up with ways to spend the money.  A bit of a reality check is needed. The City is still carrying approximately $500 million in debt.  The economy stinks.  Employment in the city is lagging behind most other areas. The responsible thing to do would be using half of the surplus to pay down debt, creating further budget savings on interest expense.  The other half should be applied to reducing taxes for city residents.  A tax reduction puts more money into the private economy.  That will increase spending, which in turn will increase investment  by private businesses.  A tax reduction will increase economic growth and raise the standard of living.  These steps will ultimately lead to an increase in revenue for the City which could be used for further debt reduction and property tax decrea
