Biodegradable microfiber implants delivering paclitaxel for post-surgical chemotherapy against malignant glioma
Researchers from National University of Singapore developed paclitaxel-loaded biodegradable implants in the form of microfiber discs and sheets by using electrospinning technique and investigated against malignant glioma in vitro and in vivo. They found that fibrous matrices not only provide greater surface area to volume ratio for effective drug release rates but also give the much needed implantability into tumor resected cavity in post-surgical glioma chemotherapy.Ref: Biomaterials, Volume 29, Issue 20, July 2008, Pages 2996-3003

What to Do When Surgical Procedures Are Uncomfortable
Cardiovascular disease from cholesterol, impacted wisdom teeth and hemorrhoids, are but three conditions that can send you off to a surgeon, but if the surgeon isn't the right one for you, the results could be disasterous. A surgery going wrong has to be one of the worst medical nightmares most people will ever see. The bare possibility of this happening is enough to frighten anyone. Therefore it helps to understand precisely what is going on, and to understand exactly what your rights are in any given medical situation. Most surgical theaters in the world have a patient's bill of rights. Always check to see if any given hospital has a patient's bill of rights and, if they do, ask for a copy. If they don't have one, find a new hospital. As long as the hospital has this standard in place, t

      Non Surgical Eye Lift
Old age gives way to signs of ageing. The upper eyelid skin becomes redundant and can hang over the eyelashes. The creases on the upper eyelid disappear and may cause vision impairment. SURGICAL EMERGENCY
Most surgeons are known to be on a short fuse anyway. Their lives are incredibly difficult and this is not assisted by the fact that the tools of their trade are now faulty. We ask ourselves what Gordon Brown expects them to work with? A visit to B and Q is just not going to cut it this time. The Royal College of Surgeons hardly takes a stance on anything unless its a serious emergency. This must therefore be a serious emergency. We have an idea though, about 90 of seniors do private practise in their NHS hours. A temporary fix may be to pack their Sainsbury's poly bags full of the basic equipment from BUPA/ Nuffield and then use it in the NHS hospitals :). These organisations have so much money, I am sure they would have no problems with loaning equipment to the NHS.From the Royal College

I'd love to know what goes through a person's mind while sitting in a fully developed country and thinking this is, in any way, a good idea.Surgical Tourism Canada offers "affordable cosmetic surgery packages in Mexico" and "affordable corrective and cosmetic dentistry in the Phillipines." And apparently, they offer spinal fusion surgeries in India.I'm Canadian. I live in India. If there is a remote chance of me getting out of bed, it would be to stand in line at the airport to buy a ticket to a fully developed country for surgery. A spinal fusion in Chennai? No. Never.Treatment in Chennai: Thank you thank you thank you I have just returned from 3 weeks in Chennai with my brother who, through Surgical Tourism Canada, had a spinal

      Surgical "Cure" for Diabetes
So, one of my patients today asked me about a surgical cure for diabetes. The only things I ever heard about were experimental procedures with the islet cells of the pancreas or something along those lines. But, then, the patient said something about gastric bypass surgery. I was mildly intrigued. This person said that they they saw a report on 60 minutes. "Oh great," I thought to myself. So, I checked out the website over there and there is not one but about four videos over there talking about this. You're going to love this. The titles of the reports are the following: The ABCs of gastric bypass surgery; Diabetes cure?; Immediate relief; and Here's the hitch. So, if for anything else, to get me up to speed with what my patients are watching, these reports claim a "cure" for diabetes - mea

Surgical Treatment Options For Hair Loss
Many men and women who experience hair loss choose to have surgical treatments which can prove to be very successful in alleviating the appearance of baldness. Some examples of such operations that can help with people suffering from hair loss are scalp reductions, scalp lifts, and hair transplants that involve micrograft procedures. When a person chooses to have a scalp reduction done, the surgery involves removing small areas of baldness from the scalp. Scalp lifts, on the other hand, are when very large areas of the hairy sections of a person's scalp is removed and rotated to other areas that are bald. And then there is the micrograft procedure which involves replacing bald patches with hair follicles that are moved from one area of the scalp to another. Each of these hair loss surgical treatments take time until the results can be fully appreciated. There is no such thing as having just one or two treatments done, and expecting a full head of hair. It typically can take mont

      Surgical Models
I just read a blog post over at Unbounded Medicine about surgical models made up of fiber glass with thoracic and abdominal compartments. The internal organs of a pig are used to simulate the organs of a human. Using this model students can perform both a laparoscopy and thoracoscopy. Looks like an awesome way to study anatomy too. I wish we had models like this in anatomy lab. Having pre-dissected bodies to look at would be very helpful. Instead, we end up spending so much time picking away at fascia. Stroke Surgical Treatment
After receiving emergency care, some stroke patients may be helped by surgery.br /br / bFor Strokes from Blockage/bbr /br / Most strokes occur when a blood vessel in the brain is blocked and blood flow stops. This type of stroke is called an ischemic (iss-KEYmik) stroke. The blockage may be caused by a blood clot, and severe brain swelling may result. Life-saving surgery may be necessary to remove the clot and the brain tissue that has died from lack of oxygen.br /br / A blockage also can occur when the artery itself narrows. A harmful fatty deposit, called plaque (PLAK), may build up in an artery and then block it. Sometimes clots form, which can then break off and travel to block another artery in the brain. Some patients can be helped by a procedure called angioplasty (AN-jee-oh-plass-tee). During the procedure, a tiny balloon at the end of a long, thin tube is pushed through the artery to the blockage. When the balloon is inflated, it opens the artery. In

If everything else fails, this could be your acne solution last resort.Often, when every avenue of medicinal treatment is exhausted, it becomes time for sufferers of persistent acne or more severe acne to seek alternative treatment methods. A dermatologist can help discuss the different treatments currently available including treating acne with laser therapy or acne surgery. If you are considering the possibility of treating acne with laser therapy or surgery, you must take care to fully evaluate each of the processes, including the number of required treatments, the consequent costs, and the potential side effects of the treatment. It's also important that you select a process that is designed to deal with reducing the presence of acne - and not acne scarring.Acne SurgeryAcne surgery involves making an incision into the affected area and draining the clogged matter. The process for blackheads and whiteheads doesn't actually involve surgery, but is often performed by a nurse, estheti

      SURGICAL INSTRUMENTS
A surgical instrument is a specially designed tool or device for performing specific actions of carrying out desired effects during a surgery or operation, such as modifying biological tissue, or to provide access or viewing it. Over time, many different kinds of surgical instruments and tools have been invented. Some surgical instruments are designed for general use in surgery, while others are designed for a specific procedure or surgery. Accordingly, the nomenclature of surgical instruments follows certain patterns, such as a description of the action it performs (for example, scalpel, hemostat), the name of its inventor(s) (for example, the Kocher forceps), or a compound scientific name related to the kind of surgery (for example, atracheotome is a tool used to perform a tracheotomy). The expression surgical instrumentation is somewhat interchangeably used with surgical instruments, but its meaning in medical jargon is really the activity of providing assistance to a surgeon with th

      Surgical And Non Surgical Facelift
The mentality has changed and people now think that a facelift is not just for the rich and famous. Today facelifts are one of the most well-accepted and most frequently performed cosmetic procedures in the world and with this surgical operation one lifts up the facial tissues and skin and/or the underlying muscle, in order to have a tighter and smoother face. A facelift can really reduce saggy skin and wrinkles and produce a more alert and youthful appearance. Several factors contribute to the final result of the facelift and they are the reason every facelift is different. If your skin is still elastic and tight, but you are concerned with sagging or excess fat in you face or under the chin, facial liposuction can be very good option. The skin is then lifted outward and the underlying tissues and muscles are tightened and fixed. Sagging skin is simply the effect of gravity over time and seems to affect the face more noticeably as it cannot be concealed by makeup. With an incision beh

Breakthrough Surgical Procedure Results In No Scars, Minimal Pain
No-Scar SurgeryProfessor Jacques Marescaux and his team successfully performed the world's first no-scar surgery. This first human operation without abdominal incisions was carried out using a flexible endoscope for transvaginal removal of the gallbladder (cholecystectomy) in a 30-year-old woman suffering from multiple pain episodes due to gallstones. This breakthrough surgical procedure, called Operation Anubis, exemplifies the evolution of surgery. The operation consists of gallbladder removal performed without scars on the abdominal wall. Using a flexible endoscope inserted into the abdominal cavity through an incision on the vaginal wall, the gallbladder is removed using an endoscopic retrieval bag. The only "invasion" to the abdominal wall consisted of a 2mm needle equipped with a video camera system. This needle also served for gas insufflation, which is necessary to create a working space within the abdomen and to monitor the intrabdominal pressure throughout the procedure. The be

      Surgical Treatment for Acne Scars
Acne leaves the scar as post effect if treated not completely or inadequately. These scars appear like black or red spots making the more embarrassing situations as compare to the acne themselves. Scars are more often difficult to treat as compare to the acne. Latest technologies offer the best treatment for acne scars. These methods fall under the surgical treatments. They are considered to be more effective than the internal medications or local applications. There are various surgical techniques by which the dermal layer that is having acne scars is removed or replaced or burnt or corrected so the acne scars get blurred and finally go off once the skin starts healing itself. Microdermabrasion is the type of surgical treatment in which the moisturizer is applied after cleaning the skin in special way. Then the power peeling is performed. Sleep Apnea Surgical Procedures Explained
Lower airway surgery is normally done for two reasons - to increase the size of the airway to improve breathing and to prevent the airway from collapsing. It also helps to minimize or prevent snoring for sleep apnea sufferers. There are several types of lower airway surgery: Genioglossus Advancement The muscle called the genioglossus connects the back of the tongue to a spot on the rear of the chin. Genioglossus advancement moves the tongue forward to leave more space for air to circulate. This surgery is done via an incision inside the patient's lower lip. Hyoid Advancement Slightly above the Adam's apple is a C-shaped bone called the hyoid bone. This bone connects the muscles at the edge of the lower throat to the back of the tongue. Hyoid advancement surgery is done to increase the space behind the tongue, allowing air to flow more freely. In this procedure, an incision is made in the hyoid bone which is then brought forward and attached to either the jawbone or the Adam's apple.
