      Superstition in Hollywood
Last night I went to see the new animated "Bee movie". It was a cute entertaining movie and I would recommend it to anyone, however, one thing in the movie bugged me =). In the very beginning of the movie there was a black screen and on it they wrote the infamous myth that "According to all known laws of aviation the bee should not be able to fly, but unaware of this fact, the bee continues to fly anyway. This is of course nonsense, and it annoys me a little bit that they could not do a Google search to find out whether their claim is true or false… So Seinfeld, if you read this, Bees have been studied intensively, and according to the laws of aerodynamics they can fly. The citation above is based on the assumption that insects fly like airplanes and thus need same wing-area, an assumpti

      Illustration Friday: Superstition
The theme this week for Illustration Friday is: "Superstition". Nothing says superstition quite like a black cat; better yet, two black cats done in acrylic on canvas entitled, "Cats Cat's". You can never have too many cats!

      “Buried” in Superstition
Superstition is defined as the following: 1 a: a belief or practice resulting from ignorance, fear of the unknown, trust in magic or chance, or a false conception of causation b: an irrational abject attitude of mind toward the supernatural, nature, or God resulting from superstition 2: a notion maintained despite evidence to the contrary Due to the poor housing market as of late, more and more morons seem to be popping up all over. I am speaking of all you idiots that truly feel that burying a statue of “St. Joseph” in your yard will help you sell your home faster. What a bunch of morons you are! (Let alone the fact that you have no idea WHAT Joseph, if he did exist, looked like.) I would like to know what you people are smoking…and where I can get some. From The Baltimore Sun: With the worst housing market in recent years, St. Joseph is enjoying a flurry of attention. Some vendors of religious supplies say St. Joseph statues are flying off the shelves as an increas

      Superstition Reigns Supreme in America
How about a short horror story in time for Halloween? The true ones are always the most terrifying, so this one will be true. In August of 2007, The Barna Group completed a nationwide telephone survey of 1,000 American adults, selected at random and weighted to reflect demographic trends. The results are quite chilling.A report of the results can be found here. Among the findings, which serve as this brief horror tale, are the following:Americans are confident in the truth of many biblical stories. In fact, two of three adults accept the literal truth of six well-known biblical stories. The story most likely to be accepted as being "literally true" (i.e., as occurring exactly as described in scripture) was "the story of Jesus Christ rising from the dead, after being crucified and buried." A full 75% of respondents said that they interpreted this story literally, including 68% of college graduates. The tale of Daniel in the lion's den was accepted as literal truth by 65% of American adul

Indian Development, Religious Myth and Superstition
Indian Chief Minister insists that Rama is just a myth But political turmoil over the proposed channel which would go through the imagined ‘Rama’s bridge’ to Sri Lanka  continues unabated.  Indian parents have overwhelmingly brough up their children to believe in Rama as God but also as a historical person. The Ramayana story is taken as fact by a vast number of Indians. This is not surprising since India never had a tradition of historical recording until the British became predominant there. As one small example, even now, many Indian books are published without the date of publication anywhere to be seen. Indian mythology is so ingrained in the life (and the countless thousands of temples or shrines) that it could be said to be ‘omnipresent’.  People will claim without blinking that this is the footprint or the tooth of Buddha, this is where Hanuman flew across the sea to Sri Lanka, or this is the mountain Hanuman carried on his back, and so on.

Superstition and the Telugu New Year
Telugu New Year has arrived with a bang. Happy New Year folks. Its officially today, a.k.a. March 19th, but thanks to the furore it may be tomorrow. Being a GOPI [Goda Meeda Pilli- (Cat on the Wall)], I am posting this article late on March 19th to please both the factions. I do not know complicated astrology, but most people consider a new moon in astrology as a good beginning. The solar eclipse may be the deciding factor though. And as far as the state cabinet goes, why is the rest of the year not proportionate to the hard work they have put-in the previous year, but dependent always on the the stars ? Tsk!.. Tsk!… For my international readers, here is the point that India differs radically from the rest of the world. Most Indian people inspite of being educated or not, come under the superstitious category. After being a non-resident and getting some perspective, I now have to admit that this is the only major reason that my country has not progressed as much as it

      Sunday Scribblings: Superstition
This Sunday Scribbling prompt brought me back to some childhood memories in the Philippines (especially my grandma)...Growing up, I have heard many superstitious beliefs from my grandparents..even my parents. They sound silly now but we kept many of them until I was old enough to know it's not true...like "don't do to bed and sleep when your hair is wet or else you'd get blind" or "don't sweep the floor with the direction going out of your house to your door because you'd sweep your luck out - so sweep going in and just use a dust pan to pick up the dust"I can think of several more...but one thing that is funny now, but not funny then...are the myths about the "aswangs" (ghouls and vampires). And one superstitious belief I clearly remember is that "aswangs are afraid of garlics. They cannot stand garlic" so you can just imagine how much garlic I keep in my room at night when I was a child :).I found one entertaining article about Filipina wives and supestition...and how western

A SELF DEFENSE SUPERSTITION This is actually real...
A SELF DEFENSE SUPERSTITIONThis is actually really freaky!! (mainly the end part, but read it all first)1) New York City has 11 letters2) Afghanistan has 11 letters.3) Ramsin Yuseb (The terrorist who threatened to destroy the Twin Towers in1993) has 11 letters.4) George W Bush has 11 letters. This could be a mere coincidence, but this gets more interesting:5) New York is the 11th state.6) The first plane crashing against the Twin Towers was flight number 11.7) Flight 11 was carrying 92 passengers. 9 + 2 = 118) Flight 77 which also hit Twin Towers, was carrying 65 passengers. 6+5 = 119) The tragedy was on September 11, or 9/11 as it is now known. 9 + 1+ 1 =1110) The date is equal to the US emergency services telephone number 911. 9 +1 + 1 = 11Sheer coincidence..?! Read on and make up your own mind:11) The total number of victims inside all the hi-jacked planes was 254. 2 +5 + 4 = 1112) September 11 is day number 254 of the calendar year. Again 2 + 5 + 4 =1113) The Madridbombing took pla

Keep Superstition Out of the Courtroom
I call your attention to a short letter published in the Fayetteville Observer by Roy Speckhardt, Executive Director of the American Humanist Association. Speckhardt argues that courtroom oaths should be secular and to attempt to incorporate all possible religions is absurd. He's right.Should a witness be required to swear an oath on the Christian bible? Of course not! America may be a Christian nation in the sense that the majority of Americans profess their Christianity, but this is simply not relevant here. Why would a Christian want a non-Christian to swear on a bible in the first place? Doesn't the Christian realize that an oath sworn over something that is not meaningful to the swearer has no value? What is the optimal solution given that we live in a multicultural society with great religious diversity? Do we have Christians swear on bibles, Muslims on Qurans, Scientologists on Hubbard, etc., and how much of this are we really prepared to accommodate? Before commenting on the a

Superstition in Presidential Politics: Implications for Obama
Shortly after Sen. Barack Obama announced his candidacy for the American Presidency, the Christian power structure sprang to life. Was this a candidate that they could endorse? You see, it is evident that a sizable number of American Christians have no intention of butting out of politics. They believe that voting their Christian values is the most important consideration, far overriding any need to keep church and state separate.According to Christian Newswire, Rev. Rob Schenck, president of the National Clergy Council, released the following statement about Obama:"Barack Obama began his presidential campaign today with the words, 'All honor and glory to God.' While all Christians should welcome the public acknowledgment of God by a serious presidential contender, such a bold pronouncement and infusion of Christian faith into his campaign will require much of Mr. Obama. Jesus Christ said by what measure we judge others, we will be judged. By injecting his faith so directly into his
