I visit these trails for a primal experience. Yeasayers is one of those groups that can’t be described by traditional methods. Sorta like those communal groups in the sixties making party all day long, singing while giving birth and recording it. Lots of percussion, tasty jazz flavored bass, and a choral group welcoming the day. I won’t reach mystic canyon for an hour, and have no need for quiet yet. These guys, with their reach for describing the wonders of nature are perfect companions. I can picture them easily performing in the natural area without electricity because they are exuding electricity in the performance. Shoutouts for Wait For The Summer, Ah Weir, Forgiveness, and Red Cave. The bears and mountain lions are entranced as I dance up the trail. Yeasayer

As the sun begins to rise earlier in the morning, I feel like a lazy bum. The sun has already risen by the time I get to work. This morning, there was a gorgeous after-sunrise scene, though. I think I'm glad I wasn't around for the sunrise because I likely would have been working instead of taking this shot. It's one I've been wanting for a while and not really knowing how to take. So now I have it and I'm happy. Enjoy!

Brilliant Red Sunrise - Sky Watch FridayFor my second Sky Watch Friday, I'm posting a sunrise. We have been having rain and wind here in Northern Cal; last week a series of powerful storms blew in and knocked out power, felled trees and generally made life difficult. I was fortunate to only be without power for a day; some of my neighbors lost theirs for 5 days. My niece has a woodstove, so my son and I spent the night at her place. Obviously the weather has not been conducive to outdoor painting, so I've been playing in photoshop and Fickr. Found some great tutorial ideas in the Photoshop support group and was able to improve some of my so-so photos. I'd forgotten what a treat it is to indulge in filter fun, and no calories, either! One of many gorgeous views I have the pleasure of seeing most mornings at work. Sure, there are the dark, dull, rainy days (though one can't complain about a chance of rain, lately), but they are not all that common. In between giving the horses hay and giving them their grain, I have to wait for a little while for their digestive systems to start working. There's also a chance to take pictures in the time that they finish their grain before I take them outside. That gives me a little bit of time to get out the camera and start taking pictures. The timing works out well. This is a more recent morning.

Perspective is the photographer's point of view. As effective as composition, finding the right perspective greatly enhances a photograph's quality. We have heard and read it before from experts: when taking a picture of a kid, stoop to his level; when photographing a flower, try it from the side not from the top (which may mean you have to crouch down low); when shooting a sunset, do it from an elevated position; and the tips go on. But the point is to find your perspective and that is taking a picture which people normally don't see. This explains why pros take great pains to climb a mountain, or go flat on their tummy just to take pictures from a different orientation or outlook. Well, we amateurs don't have to go through all that efforts, yet knowing where to stand, taking a higher position, or a shot from the side, below or vertical, can result in photos which may not only impress picture-viewers but also personally satisfy the picture-taker.
