NEFA Foundation: Al-Qaida Loses Yet Another Sunni Insurgent Ally in Iraq Amid Allegations of "Threats" and "Blackmail"
The Army of al-Mustafa (a.k.a. “Jaish al-Mustafa”)—a Sunni insurgent group which has claimed credit for at least three joint operations with Al-Qaida’s “Islamic State of Iraq” (ISI) since January 2008—has suddenly broken off relations with the ISI, accusing its local commanders of engaging in “threats” and “blackmail.” In a statement released on April 15, a Jaish al-Mustafa field commander known as “Abu Muslim al-Mosuli”...(read more)

NEFA Chart: State of the Sunni Insurgency in Iraq 2008
The NEFA Foundation has released a new chart that I have created mapping the complex network of Sunni insurgent groups fighting in Iraq. The chart includes representations for the four dominant insurgent umbrella groups--Al-Qaida's Islamic State of Iraq (ISI), the Reform and Jihad Front (RJF), the Political Council for the Iraqi Resistance (PCIR), and the Front for Jihad and Change (FJC)--as well as over twenty individual organizations, including Al-Qaida, the Ansar al-Sunnah Army, the Army of al-Mustafa,...(read more)

Transformer actor Shia's not so 'Sunni' Disposition
As our devoted readership may have noticed during down time between scheduled Thorazine dosages, we Shark Guys are very reluctant to comment on celebrity transgressions -- mainly because we hope to one day run in those circles and don't want future champagne and orange juice breakfasts ruined by tension resulting from a post here -- but since neither of us had heard of Shia LaBeouf (which sounds like a 'Bichon Frise' that would leave tiny clumps of poop in some of the finer manicured parkettes in Manhattan's Upper East Side, or a lip-synching drag act in the outer suburbs of Marseilles) we figured he/she/it was fair game.Due to the fact that we're a good 2o or so years removed from sitting cross-legged on the living room floor and having our GI Joes violate Geneva Conventions with our sisters' Army Brat edition Barbies, neither of us had seen the Transformers movie, but upon cross-referencing of numerous Google sources it appears he was in it.Since neither of us wakes up during d

Iraq death toll declines: ‘Even the birds are Sunni’
October marked the lowest monthly death toll for American troops, 36 fatalities, since March 2006, when 31 were killed, according to icasualties.org. American commanders credit the buildup, which reached full strength in June, with slowing sectarian bloodshed. They say the decision to send 28,500 more troops to Iraq has made a difference by allowing them to send soldiers to live on the fault lines between Sunni Arab and Shiite neighborhoods in Baghdad, and to conduct sweeping offensives in provinces east and south of the capital against strongholds of Shiite Muslim militias and Sunni militants linked to foreign insurgents. But others say that the picture is more complicated than that because those seeking to cleanse their neighborhoods of rival religious sects have largely succeeded. The civilian death toll plummeted nationwide in the last two months; the toll was 2,076 in January but 884 in September and 758 in October, according to the Iraqi Health Ministry. “Everyo

Al-Qaida Continues Campaign of Accusations Against Fellow Sunni Insurgents in Iraq
Over the past two weeks, Al-Qaida's "Islamic State of Iraq" has continued to escalate its campaign of public accusations blasting fellow Sunni insurgents for "deviating" from the path of legitimate jihad and working directly with U.S. military forces in Iraq. The latest target of Al-Qaida's wrath has been the 1920 Revolution Brigades, a prominent Muslim Brotherhood-linked militant group which has issued a frantic flurry of recent statements denying any role in aiding American "occupiers." Yet, according...(read more)

Sunni alliance with the US military - been there, done that?
Among successes stated in the Gen. Petraeus report to Congress on the recent troop surge in Iraq, one of the most prominent was the recent and unexpected alliance between US military and some Sunni groups and tribes. The participating Sunni leaders, some of which were actively involved in sectarian violence and attacks on the foreign forces in the last 4 years, based their decision on the fact that Al Qaeda in Iraq had become an unwanted visitor in their country that failed to different friend from foe. That's why they decide do join the US and fight Al Qaeda fighters along side their former enemies. But, does this mean that those groups don't longer see the US as a invading force?Iraq has become partitioned in all but name. Like the Shiites, Sunni militias know that the US presence has to dissolve. They are in Iraq only temporary. Just like the Al Qaeda. As long as they are wanted, they will stay. When not wanted, they will attack and try to leave mayhem in their wake, but will leave

Abdul-Sattar Abu Risha was leader of the Anbar Salvation Council, also known as the Anbar Awakening -- an alliance of clans backing the Iraqi government and U.S. forces. No group claimed responsibility for the assassination but suspicion fell on al-Qaida in Iraq, which U.S. officials say has suffered devastating setbacks in Anbar thanks to Abu Risha and his fellow sheiks.A Ramadi police officer said Abu Risha had received a group of poor people at his home earlier in the day, to mark the beginning of the Muslim holy month of Ramadan. The officer, speaking on condition of anonymity out of security concerns, said authorities believed the bomb was planted by one of the visitors. More...

3 Sunni mosques attacked in Iraq
BAGHDAD — Militants blew up three Sunni mosques south of Baghdad on Wednesday — apparently revenge strikes for a suicide truck bombing a day before that killed at least 87 people and badly damaged an important Shiite mosque in the capital. U.S. forces expanded their push against insurgent strongholds outside Baghdad, meanwhile, as Iraqi units joined the offensive and took control of several districts in the key city of Baqouba, the military said. The commander of U.S. ground forces, Lt. Gen. Raymond Odierno, said the campaign seeks to uproot insurgents — including Sunni factions linked to al-Qaida — in areas north and east of Baghdad and allow Iraqi forces to take greater control over the four-month-old effort to restore control of the capital. The offensive, launched Tuesday, "allows us to pressure" militants on the militant bases outside Baghdad, Odierno told CNN. "More important, I'm hoping it will allow us to maintain it over a long period of time and cont

US arming Sunni groups in Iraq, report says
Baghdad/New York - US military leaders are supplying Sunni groups in Iraq with weapons and other armoury to fight al-Qaeda terrorists, The New York Times reported Monday. After a test phase in early 2007 conducted in the western province of Anbar, US military leaders had reluctantly agreed to extend the arms support to four other Sunni-dominated restive provinces in central Iraq, the report added. The support is going mainly to Sunni groups, who used to back al- Qaeda terrorists, but later turned their backs on them. They are to receive - mainly through the Iraqi Army - weapons, ammunition, money and other equipment. During initial negotiations, they had agreed to warn US soldiers of booby traps. The government in Baghdad is sceptical of these plans and so far Shiites have resisted negotiating with Sunni insurgents. The office of the Shiite government chief said Monday that Prime Minister Nuri al-Maliki had met Admiral William Fallon, a commander in the US Central Command who is respon

Dear Sunni's & Shiites: Proposal For A New Solution
I am writing this in response to this article. If you haven't heard a key Samarra Mosque was bombed today, and will probably set off another wave of violence. So, I have decided to construct a proposal to submit to the two key players in this damn "conflict". The Sunni's and the Shiites. June 13, 2007Dear Sunni's and Shiites,I sit here day after day and watch the telly and see how many innocent lives are being slaughtered. I try to understand the reasoning on turning your backs upon your own people, yet I can't. I do, however understand one thing.I know that we aren't wanted there, and quite frankly I don't want us there either. If you guys want to kill each other off, so be it. So, I have come up with the following proposal. I believe that you will find it agreeable. Stop the violence for at least six months. No more IEDS, no mortars, No bombs, No kidnappings, nothing. NONE of that. Now, I realize this is a hard concept, and you must think I am insane for even bringing up such a

Sunni tribesmen kill Al Qaeda leader al-Dabbagh.
Report: Al Qaeda in Iraq Chief Abu Ayyub al-Masri Killed in Battle With Another Insurgent Group Tuesday, May 01, 2007 This story is more significant than the usual Al Qaeda #2 dead because he was killed by Sunni tribesmen instead of Shia militia or the American Army. Sunni sheiks in Anbar to form new national party to oppose al-Qaida
More than 200 Sunni sheiks in Iraq's western Anbar province have decided to form a new political party to oppose al-Qaida. The men met Thursday in Ramadi, Anbar's provincial capital, and agreed to form a new party called Iraq Awakening, said Sheik Jubeir Rashid, a participant at the meeting. The group would be a national party, with a platform of opposition to al-Qaida and cooperation with the Shiite-led government in Baghdad. Rashid is also an aide to Sheik Abdul Sattar al-Rishawi, leader of the Anbar Salvation Council — an alliance of clans in the province which back the government. Al-Rishawi is one of the chief organizers of the new party as well. The Iraq Awakening party would not be linked to any existing Sunni groups, Rashid said.More

Iran – Equal Opportunity Tehrrorist Regime – Sunni, Shia, Taliban, Latin America
In this post: Iranian weapons in Afghanistan; Ahmadinejad vows to cut off hands and Islamic fundamentalisms rise in Latin America. As we breathlessly await some type of action on the Ilsamic Republic of Iran by the UN, EU and others, the radical militancy of that regime continues to spread throughout the world. Not only does Iran support both Shia and Sunni elements in Iraq, but it also supports the Taliban in Afghanistan: “U.S. forces recently intercepted Iranian-made weapons intended for Taliban fighters in Afghanistan, the Pentagon's top general said Tuesday, suggesting wider Iranian war involvement in the region.” The Weapons discovered thus far include mortars and C-4, but no further information has been given as to other possible arms. It is not known at this time whether the weapons came directly from Iran or through a third party. Michael Rubin of the American Enterprise Institute said yesterday: "Iran's leadership often strikes pragmatic relationships

Guns, TNT Found in Sunni lawmaker's Home
BAGHDAD - U.S. and Iraqi troops found a huge stash of weapons in a raid on the home of a Sunni lawmaker and detained at least a dozen men for questioning, officials said Sunday. Brig. Gen. Qassim al-Moussawi, spokesman for the Baghdad security plan, said the raid targeted a house of legislator Khalaf al-Ilyan — one of the three leaders of the Iraqi Accordance Front, which holds 44 seats in parliament. "During the search, we discovered many weapons and explosive materials," al-Moussawi said at a news conference. He did not say when the raid took place, but a U.S. military statement said it occurred Tuesday. Among the weapons found in the house were 33 Kalashnikov rifles, three pistols, one hand grenade, 4.4 pounds of TNT and 13 82-mm mortar rounds, al-Moussawi said. The U.S. military said eight 57-mm rockets and 5,000 rounds of ammunition were also seized, along with photos of burning British soldiers and American flag-draped coffins. A detailed search revealed buried mortar rounds wi
