Vincent’s Sunflowers
“The sunflower is mine in a way.” –Vincent van Gogh
Van Gogh’s “Sunflowers” are among his most famous paintings, but few people realize he did many sunflower pictures, not just the most famous “Vase with Twelve Sunflowers” and “Vase with Fifteen Sunflowers.” These were canvases he made to decorate the Yellow House in Arles in [...]

Vincent Van Gogh’s Paintings of Sunflowers
Of Vincent Van Gogh’s many series of paintings and periods in his career, his most famous is arguable that of the Sunflowers. Paintings of sunflowers have become synonymous with Van Gogh and his work in the latter part of his life. Many artists have tried to duplicate his technique over [...]
Hearing The Boy's car crunch the gravel in the driveway at 9:30pm last night, I raced down the stairs to greet him. He was accompanied by 4 buckets of Viognier grapes, complete with visible creepy crawlies escaping from the top. But, before I could freak out, he gave me this:
Oh. Well, OK then.
He explained that he needed "toping" juice for his wine as it fermented. This is sometimes called the "angels share". When wine ferments in oak barrels, often times 1 to 5 % of the juice evaporates. (you oak ferment for a number of reasons including imparting the toasted flavor of the oak into the wine) and to keep then amount of oak that is imparted into the juice, you want to be consistent and not have one barrel of wine be more concentrated with oak flavor then another. But, Ryan doesn't need the Viognier grapes yet, or rather, he doesn't have time to press them for the juice. So, they need to be kept cold, until he is ready to sue them.
I happily trimmed the
van Gogh and the Sunflowers (Anholt’s Artists Books for Children)
I don’t think many people would agree that Vincent van Gogh is exactly the most friendly individual of his time. It’s speculative to what led him to his final days, a tragic story. Here is a little story contorted in pure fabrication for kids to get a feel and appreciation for the master artist. Add a few elements of child curiosity and a day in the life of Vincent van Gogh where he meets a young child and you begin to see the world of Vincent van Gogh through an innocent perspective. Laurence Anholt the author of this book series, has other books where kids meet other artists in history such as Monet, Degas, Picasso, and Leonardo .
Young Camille befriends a strange visitor to his small town, and one day he brings this man a gift of bright, beautiful sunflowers. The man is the artist Vincent van Gogh, and the sunflowers quickly become the subject of

"Betsy's Sunflowers"10X8Oil on Canvas BoardAvailableClick on Picture to enlarge it.Happy faces of Sunflowers! At this moment they, and everything else in our little section of the planet, are gasping for water and some cooler temperatures. But they do look cheerful here since I took the picture of them a couple of weeks ago. You know, just about every artist of historical note has done Sunflowers. (does that mean I am now in that category? In my dreams! :) Of course, Van Gogh's come to mind first. It wasn't until my daughter planted them that I had ever seen red ones. I like the yellow ones, too, so maybe I'll try those next summer. If you love Sunflowers, this is a way to see them all year long! You might not see a post for a little while from me....because I have a commission to work on. It's a big dog and a bigger painting so this could take some time. Her name is Annie and very loved by her owners. I might post some progress pictures if I think it's going O.K. If it
"Betsy's Sunflowers" In Progress10X8Oil on Canvas PanelMy daughter, Betsy, loves sunflowers. If she had a signature flower, this would be her choice. Earlier in the summer, before the drought and the 100 degree temperatures hit, I visited her garden with my camera in hand. I was lucky enough to catch a bee having its afternoon snack on this red variety of sunflower. This one is for her...but obviously I am still working on it. This weather is like the opposite of deep cold January. But it makes you want to hunker down and not go outside just as much as winter. Alone in my studio with the paints and brushes...and just Bosley to keep me company. He, too, has had it with this weather and we are longing for some days when we can get out there and go walking again. As it is, he barely sticks his nose outside, takes care of necessities, and turns around to come back inside. I've taken in some commissions on dog portraits again, too...so as soon as I finish this I am beginning work o

I said I would do a study of sunflowers for Flowers in Art month and here they are - more about these later. When I was younger it took me an awful long time to realise just how many sunflower paintings Van Gogh painted. This post is about that and the value of repetition.

Buttonwood Farm in Griswold Gearing Up for the Main Event! This is a heads up blog post before the official blog post about my upcoming July 2007 visit to Buttonwood Farm in Griswold. Last year around this time, I blogged about my adventures at Buttonwood where the skies are blue, the ice cream is superb and the sunflowers are just waiting to be photographed. Each year since 2003, the good folks at Buttonwood Farm have planted 10 acres of sunflowers providing about 300,000 blooms to be sold in bunches, with proceeds going to the Make-A-Wish Foundation. This year the event will be held July 21th - July 29th. This is probably one of my favorite photo opportunities of the year and the fact I can eat ice cream while doing it makes it even better. I plan to make my annual trek next week. I won't be able to share any ice cream but I'll have plenty of photos!See AlsoMore on Buttonwood FarmJuly 2006 Post on Sunflowers for WishesBack to Button
Cheerful and colorful sunflowers to brighten my still gloomy, cold and rainy weather. This is a giclee print from a batik watercolor from my potfolio. I am fond of the square format. Once upon a time I was fortunate enough to live adjacent to a flower farm and could see these beauties just over my fence. Annually, the farmers daughters (no pun intended) would plant these and they would always grow to 6 feet tall. I could never understand how they stayed so straight and strong. They were always dynamic and would brighten anybody's day.$22 + 4.50 del.conf.ship in u.s.

"Scientists and manufacturers are currently looking at ways of designing phones that are better for the environment, and some of their ideas on display here include circuit boards made from chicken feathers and phones featuring new smart metals that take themselves apart for recycling. However, the aforementioned sunflower phone is one of the stars of the show. Its prototype cover with implanted sunflower seed allows the sunflower to grow, getting its additional nutrients from the biodegrading phone cover."Read the rest of the article at 24 Hour Museum »
A Lesson In Life?
“I don't think there's anything on this planet that more trumpets life that the sunflower.
For me that's because of the reason behind its name. Not because it looks like the sun but because it follows the sun.
During the course of the day, the head tracks the journey of the sun across the sky. A satellite dish for sunshine. Wherever light is, no matter how weak, these flowers will find it.
And that's such an admirable thing. And such a lesson in life."
Quote from the ‘Calendar Girls’ movie.

Painters Tip
Choosing Mediums For Subjects
If you are a one medium painter, this will not relate to you but if you use multiple mediums as I do, you can sometimes choose your medium relating to the subject you want to paint.
I love to use acrylic for florals. The crisp clean color and edge work makes acrylic ideal for flowers. Of course I have done many florals with oils,,casein, and even watercolors from time to time over the years, but I love them with acrylic the best.
For landscape work you just can't beat oils. Landscape requires soft and hard edge work, a lot of atmospherics and rich and subtle tones. Oils have such diversity and richness that they are ideally suited.
For fine detail and realism, egg tempera and casein are king.
I am not a watercolorist, but I have seen lovely floral work with that medium as well.
My point here is not to single out one medium over another. I am suggesting

Community Garden Sunflowers, 9x12, oil/linen$375, unframedContact: jan.blencowe@comcast.netBauer Park has community garden plots where folks can grow vegetables and flowers and as you can see sunflowers of every variety are very popular. There's a bit of glare in this photo making things appear a bit sharp, the original has a very warm mellow feel to it. I think it's the texture of the linen this is painted on that causes the light to catch the raised fibers and pick up the sunlight reflecting off the wet paint. Anyway this has such a warm, summer's end feel to it I think it's one of my favorites of this year!plein airpaintingartlandscapegardensunflowers
