      How to harvest sunflower seeds
The trickiest part of harvesting sunflower seeds is timing. If you wait too long, the birds will let you know when you wake up to the head of the flower on the ground with seeds devoured. There are a couple of ways to get around this when the backs of your sunflowers begin to get yellow cover them with a paper bag or cheesecloth to inhibit the birds from stealing them. How Sesame and Sunflower Seeds Can Relieve Constipation

If you like to eat seeds then this is once way you can add more fiber, vitamins and minerals to your diet and at the same time reduce your constipation.Maoshing Ni, Ph.D., C.A. and Cathy McNease, B.S., M.H. in their book, The TAO of Nutrition,1987, recommends using black sesame seeds for chronic constipation. Here’s what he says,“Grind black sesame seeds into a meal by using a small coffee grinder. Mix with dark honey into a small ball. Eat one three time a day dipped in rice wine.”Black sesame seeds also provide nutrition and action on the liver, intestines, kidney, and blood. You can also prepare a sesame seeds soup with brown rice. Sunflower Fields of Lop Buri
1 November - 31 January 2008: Lop Buri Province Deep in some horticulture website comes a line on how kids love sunflowers for their brightness and their bigness. But as we take a Sunday drive to where Thailand's rice fields become rolling countryside and huge hills of marble and granite, a child's fascination appears strikingly more evident among the adults swarming the edges of field after field of sunflowers, or thantawan as they are called here. Certainly no honey or fragrance has drawn them. Crowding under the circus-like canopies of festive yellow, blue and green stripes, perhaps they see what Van Gogh saw. Maybe they hope to follow the flower's face turning from east to west, drinking in as much sunlight as it can in a day. When fully grown, the flowers will stop chasing the sun and stand still until their heads droop and their vivid colour evaporates and someone comes along and picks them for what has been described as the ultimate bird food. Although, the mineral

I'm not sure just how much extra stuff I'll be bringing home, but better to be safe than sorry.  The plan is ... if I need the room, I'll throw my clothes in the duffle and take it as carry on for the return flight, and I'll still have the two suitcases for my projects and "stuff" I collect.  Worse comes to worse, I'll ship some of the items back home.  I weighed my suitcase all full and it is just under 50 lbs so I'm good to go.  I've spent tonight trying to find a good picture of my husband to take with m

      Therapeutic Metaphor: Sunflower Seeds
I've written a lot about "therapeutic distinctions" in previous posts, so now I'm going to turn my attention to an occasional series of posts regarding various therapeutic metaphors that I use from time to time in my session work with clients. I find metaphors to be excellent ways of highlighting concepts that people can find useful in their lives, often in subtle and unexpected ways. The first one is about sunflower seeds. Have you ever eaten sunflower seeds out of the shell? You pop a few into your mouth, split the shells with your teeth and extract the seeds with your tongue. The final step is to spit out the shells and eat the seeds. You sure don’t either spit out or swallow the whole thing. This can be a good metaphor for being selective about what you take into yourself. Take two people who may love each other but are having a heated argument. Sometimes people get so frustrated that they get their feelings really hurt by the slightest thoughtless thing their partner s

The Sunflower that's really a sunflower [Close-up of a Sunflower]
Close-up of a SunflowerSunflower Close-upSince I posted the photo of a pumpkin flower under the title of "The Sunflower that's not a sunflower", I've had people ask whether I have any real sunflower photos. So I had a look through my archives and found this photo. I took this shot a few years ago, when I had just got a new 4.2MP digital camera (the Kodak C330). The level of detail is amazing - try viewing this photo full-size and you can even see the fine hairs on the leafy part. This would definitely do well as a desktop background. This photo really seems to draw you into it with a sense of depth and perspective, even though it has a relatively "flat" subject. The circular center section with the stamen in it seems to bulge out, while the petals radiating from the center appear to bend inwards. The eye is particularly drawn to the center section, but this image has to be viewed as a whole to be fully appreciated. An interesting thing to note is the fact that this photo does not actu

The sunflower that's not a Sunflower [Pumpkin Flower]
Bright yellow Pumpkin vine flowerYellow Pumpkin FlowerWhenever I look at this flower I'm reminded of the sun. The vibrant yellow color and the flower's ray-like petals are like an ancient Greek portrayal of the sun, with it's flares of yellow shining out from the center orb. However, this flower is really only a humble Pumpkin flower, shown here in front of the Pumpkin vine's leaves. This is very much a "standard" type of shot from a compositional standpoint - the main object of the photo is centered in the frame, and the background is very plain so as not to attract attention. This photo is an example of how you don't really need any fancy framing or exposure modes and settings to take a good photo - this photo was taken in point-and-shoot mode! This photo taken with the Sony DSC-H1 camera.Related Photos:Balloon Vine flower with water dropletsThe Egg Plant shows it's true colors... Sunflower Sunday Family Painting Commission
I realized today that I have so many new paintings completed during the last few weeks and I haven't taken the time to post them. So tonight I'm making a start by posting the painting I finished today. It's always the best feeling when I finish a commission, send the image off to the client and they're happy... beyond happy, over the moon, delighted beyond words is my preference of course! And today was one of those happy days. From the start it was my favourite kind of commission. Lovely clients who made it clear what they like but put great trust in me and encouraged me to paint. It's a sort of portrait that portrays where this family is in their lives, who they are to each other. The figures are intended to "represent" the family members rather than "be" them. And they love Sunflowers!

      Sunflower Jade Hybrid
Sunflowers (Helianthus annus) are popular annuals because not only do they provide beauty to a garden but they also serve as a food source for animals like birds, squirrels and humans. They also seem to have a special place in the hearts of people who don't even garden and be found replicated in many mediums from t-shirts to paintings. They've even sort of become the icon of Green ideology. This spring my sister gave me a packet of sunflower seeds she received at the gas station when she filled up her gas tank at BP.Unless you're a gardener you may not know that there are many varieties of sunflowers available besides the generic orange or yellow colored flowers are so common in florist shops. One of those newer varieties that I grow is the Jade hybrid. I'm not sure which two were crossed to form this flower but I love the lime green color of this flower. My biggest pet peeve with this sunflower though is that is seems so susceptible to black spot. By the time the plant is in fu

      Sunflower (A One Woman Play.)
As the audience files in they see a single flower growing out of center stage underneath a soft spotlight. It is a magnificent yellow sunflower rising up to greet the afternoon sun. A soft violin solo fills the air. Houselights fade and all is dark save for the soft light. The violin swells and the light slowly fades. The music fades out as we hear a woman speaking from the dark. Lights rise on and around the flower now and we see a woman kneeling on a blanket.WOMAN:Are you warm enough? I brought a blanket to sit on. I will leave it with you. I’m sure nights here are dreadfully cold. Is that okay? Can I leave the blanket for you? (Beat.) Good. Then I will. (Beat.) Yes. (Beat.) After I leave. (Long pause.)To read the full play click on the read more link. The children are doing fine. (Beat.) Chelsea made the honor roll. (Beat.) Wait? No. I- I probably already told you that, huh? (Beat.) That was last year. (Beat.) My mind always travels backward now. Since you were- …Since you’ve b

      sunflower seeds
During our weekly visits to the fresh vegetable market, my partner picked up some sunflower seeds. I have eaten them before and really enjoyed them but for whatever reason, it’s just not something we have thought to buy. But this week we weren’t in a major hurry to get out of the store (very rare) and took the time to browse the shelves. We found a large selection of nuts, seeds and grains and very affordable prices. We decided on a container of sunflower seeds and I’ve really enjoyed having them as a tasty snack. We have since found out some nutritional facts which I’d like to share. A handful of sunflower seeds will take care of your hunger, while also enhancing your health by supplying significant amounts of vitamin E, magnesium and selenium. They contain Phytosterols which are compounds found in plants. When included in the diet sunflower seeds are believed to reduce blood levels of cholesterol and enhance the immune response and decrease risk of certain

      Sunflower Myths And Legends
Sunny Stories, Myths And Meanings ... The sunny face of a sunflower always makes me smile ... in fact; I think it must be almost impossible to not feel happy when you see sunflowers peering over a fence or hedge ... Whilst it’s still a little early to be planting sunflowers for this year’s garden, I’ve been doing a bit of research into what the sunflower represents to different people around the world ... Here’s just a taste of what I’ve found out ... Sunny Sunflowers ... I’m correct to be cheered by the sight of bright yellow sunflowers … the sunflower is often believed to promise warmth, nourishment and power (a cheerful thought ...), with the gift of a dwarf sunflower signifying a ‘devout admirer’ ... Although other cultures believe the sunflower to have a regal appearance and see only the bad characteristics that this can bring ... haughtiness for one, false appearances and even unhappy love (hard to believe I’m sure you’ll agree ...) If you’d l

      Sunflower Farm
Sunflower Farm, 9x12, oil$300, unframed, Shipping is Free in the USTo purchase contact: jan.blencowe@comcast.netI did this painting in late August or early September at a nearby community garden where sunflowers are a popular "crop". It wasn't a bad painting but something about it just didn't sit right with me. After I got home I realized that it was the temperature of the light. It was hot and hazy in the late afternoon, but I didn't quite capture that feel to my satisfaction. As I reflected on the painting I realized that while I had focused on the hazy feel the light in the painting had gone cool. I sat and mused as to why. Then I figured it out. The haze is caused by water vapor in the air, which reflects the sky, which of course is blue, a cool color. So I knew that what I should do was let the painting dry and then scumble a thin veil of warm light over the trees and grass. The sunflowers already being warm yellows and oranges were picking up the sunlight and shining li

Sunflower and Two Gourds, 6x8, oil $100, unframed, free shipping in the US To purchase contact: jan.blencowe@comcast.net Gourds are gourd-ge-ous!! And so are the few sunflowers I have left in a vase. Yep, this is one of the same flowers from the painting a few days ago called "Last of the Sunflowers" I'm trying to make the most of them before they fade. Then I'll have to wait until next year :( I just love all these warm colors of autumn, they're like comfort colors for me, sorta of like the meatloaf and mashed potatoes of the art world LOL. Pretty soon though the muted greys, blues and umbers, the quiet, meditative solitary colors of winter will be the order of the day. Each season has it's own particular look and feel. Enjoy each one! painting a day daily painting

      Sunflower Egg
I made these cute little sunflower eggs for my son for his dinner today. Hmmm…. looks cute isn't it?Ingredients:(makes 8) 4 cocktail sausages8 quail eggsHow to do it:Cut the cocktail sausages into halves along their length. Make slight cuts on the side of each half.Join the 2 ends of each half with a toothpick to form a ring.Slightly fry the sausages.Quickly add a quail egg into each ring. Fry well.Note:Cook with small fire. When the egg white starts to turn white, add water to cook instead. The bottom of the egg white will still be soft, not be burn or too hard for kids to eat.The outcome is so lovely! I think kids will love it.
