Summer vacation just isn't summer break anymore. Summer is now regarded as an extension of the regular school year but with concentration on extra-curricular activities such as swimming, soccer, ballet, hip-hop, taekwondo, gymnastics, basketball, ice-skating, tennis and badminton clinics, golf lessons, music lessons and what-have -you.There are programs for speaking and writing better English and reinforcement classes for Math and Science too. Joseph had his first day of summer school today. He has stressed about this for the past two months. He was sure that he would hate it and that it would ruin his whole summer. When I went to pick him up today the first words out of his mouth were "I love summer school! I wish it was longer!"I knew he would like it once it started. Like so many things with Joseph though, just getting him to try something is the hard part. He gets so worried about things that are new and unknow that by the time the new thing happens he's managed to work himself into a little anxiety attack. We have yet to find a good way to deal with this other than just forcing him into things and then not tell him "I told you so!" when it turns out that we were right and he likes them after all. I recently received the information regarding the work I have to do for the journal over the summer. I get the distinct privilege of reading and grading a bunch of student writing pieces. Very exciting, indeed.I have about three weeks to complete the task and send them back. I'm not really looking forward to doing it. This will certainly keep me busy this weekend and perhaps the next couple. Although the idea has popped into my mind, I currently have no intention to try to do any of this work while physically at The Firm.I guess it could be worse. I mean, I remember having to write that paper last year in addition to starting my first position as a summer associate. That first week really sucked while I was trying to do both. I just can't believe that the 1L's are all finished writing their papers so soon. Apparently time flies when you're having fun. Oh well, I guess I had better get to work on grading them.

Before If you went to summer school it was because you flunked a class. Now kids are going to summer school just to stay ahead and get those annoying classes out of the way. Although most kids attending school in the summer have failed a class and need to make it up; these other students just want to graduate early.Most kids at Upland High School take the more popular classes which are probably P.E. and math.
