This weekend, I am heading to Lincoln City, Oregon, for a Jewish Women’s spa retreat regrettably titled “ReJEWvenation.” I swear to Judy Blume, this is the name of the event…and the reason I have never gone before – just a terrible, terrible name. But I’ve heard from multiple sources that it’s a blast – a [...]

Academic Summer Camp Provides Parent Support by: Jim HartleyFor many years at SuperCamp, parents would ask us if we could start a program for them, to help them learn what their sons and daughters are learning at SuperCamp. In response, we started Parent Weekend an intensive three-day parent program that coincides with the final three days of a 10-day Junior Forum or Senior Forum student programs
The weather yesterday was so warm here in Toronto. My kids love it so much as they always have fun at the beach. I always bring them to the beach with their friends to have fun. I love seing them having so much fun and excitement. Yesterday, they told me that there are so many campers at the beach and they saw how the children have fun with the group. They asked me to enroll them at our church's s
Missing your loved ones. Crying over it. Failing to enjoy the freedom that summer camp brings. I'm not talking about kids here, I'm talking about their utterly wussy, wimpacious parents, as mentioned in this piece that appeared in SF Gate. The article describes a woman who, on bidding adieu to her 8-yr-old for 2 weeks, noticed that it wasn't the kids who were crying: "There were no children crying
Sorry for the blog absence all week. I've been at summer camp! We head to summer camp just about every July for a week, and this year is no different. I'm privileged to take the kids to Camp Dry Gulch in Oklahoma. Besides the camp residing in the greatest state in the union (wonder where I'm from???), it's a pretty swell camp all on it's own. There are those that love planning, organizing, and

Contrary to what the above title might imply, I’m not actually giving away Robbie. Liz wouldn’t like that.

I know you’re waiting on pins and needles, so without further ado, the winner of the album is:

Parents are often looking at the various aspects of summer camps and forget to look at the biggest concerns.
There are several benefits that a camp can provide; however, there must be a good program in order to actually provide the benefits that are possible. If you select the wrong program [...]
Here is the final illustration! Is it similar to how you thought it would turn out? ;)I am not going into the painting process in thisseries of posts, but I might do that in the future.Hope you enjoy!
Here is the piece all inked and ready for watercolor. This is a picture from my iphone, not a scan, which explains why it looks so shoddy, but I wanted to show this stage. You will be able to see the ink work better in the final illustration scan!Once the ink is done and dried, I erase all of the pencil from the paper. Here are some of my tools:I like to use the nib pens sometimes because they give an interesting, non-uniform line. But I love my Rapidograph pens too, and they have been my number one for so long, I feel like I am cheating on them by mentioning the nibs. The big brush helps with sweeping away eraser bits off a large piece of paper. (My framer sister Julie gave it to me.) I use mechanical pencils, regular wood pencils and also woodless pencils. (I like HB hardness the best.)
Here's the next step -- a color study. Look at how rough this is. Sometimes I skip this step, but it is really important to do some color planning -- even if it is super rough, and even if it's just helping me to figure out what I don't want to do. (Sometimes I do it in my head, but I think that doing it on paper helps more, even though it never seems to mimic the finished product at all.) This is one step that's never not helpful. This is just done on the print out from the rough rough initial sketch. See, it's totally non-fancy -- a very useful scribble. (You will see that this little color study helped me figure out what I did not end up doing.)

Kelsie Rae, our great counselor last summer, wrote to share this cool camp logo she designed for a class in college. We love the mountains and sun— just perfect for camp. But also the redbird, the Rockbrook summer camp emblem, is super cool. Thanks Kelsie!
Great news! We were just added to the EatonWeb Blog Directory. It’s the oldest blog directory on the internet, and is very particular about which blogs the editors accept. The main editorial review they wrote about us is particularly excellent. Here it is.
“This is the online journal of the Rockbrook Camp for Girls, a summer camp located in the mountains of North Carolina. Having been established in 1921, the camp itself is steeped in history, and this blog (started in January 2005) is a brave step forward into cyberspace. Along with camp announcements and info on their program, staff, and campers, the blog offers a great sneak peek into the camp’s fun activities courtesy of photos and experiences from camp alumnae. We can’t stress enough the coolness of the photos here; they alone are enough reason to visit the Rockbrook Camp blog. Parents might even get a tip or two about kids’ activities which they can carry out in their own backyards!”
Here’s a set of photos taken one Sunday afternoon at camp. We were queuing up for our cabin photos and took these at the same time. They show our traditional uniforms (white shirt and shorts, plus a red tie) that we wear on Sundays and at other special events.
We’ve been getting so many questions about it, we thought we’d send along a quick update about the Lakeview Lodge renovation going on. Rockbrook has three cool old stone lodges, one for each age group (Juniors, Middlers and Seniors). They were built back in the 1920s and have wooden floors, huge fireplaces, and windows all around. The two largest ones have wooden framed (using Locust log posts!) porches wrapping around three sides. This fall we’re replacing the porches on one of these, the one that overlooks the Rockbrook Camp lake. It really is turning out great. The oak decking looks fabulous. Once we have the railings put up, it’ll really be awesome. We’ll keep you posted as things move ahead.

We had a great time down in New Orleans earlier this month. It was another fantastic Rockbrook Camp party complete with slides from last summer and the all-new video. Seeing current RBC campers and meeting so many new girls interested in attending camp next summer was such fun! Attending these events is the one of the best ways to rekindle that Rockbrook spirit and to learn a bit about what makes Rockbrook unique. It’s a chance to ask questions and to imagine yourself being a part of camp. A big thanks to Shelby (there she is with McKain!) and her family for hosting the party.

Here is a glimpse into Rockbrook Summer Camp history. A family here is Brevard, the Tuckers, who are related to the Carriers, who founded Rockbrook back in 1921, found a stack of old camp photos and passed them along to us. Some certainly show their age, but there are so many fascinating shots of what camp was like in the past. This is a good example showing the original uniforms the girls wore. Amazing!

Couldn’t resist sending along this article about our favorite local ice cream shop, Dolly’s Dairy Bar. It’s from the online edition of the Hendersonville newspaper, The Times-News. If you’ve been to Dolly’s, you’ll love the article and enjoy hearing some of the trivia it reports. For example, did you know that Dolly’s has a total of 54 different flavors, including the 22 “summer camp flavors, ” and did you know that the Rockbrook flavor, Rockbrook Chocolate Illusion, is one of the top 5 flavors? Our campers just love the place.
If you’re ever in the Brevard area, you should check it out!

Yup, as summer gives way to autumn, and us old farts point and laugh at the miserable faces on the young as they march back to school, we say good-bye to our fondest summer camp memories:Okay, let's pretend for a moment those wooden letters would stay in the air long enough for these dullards to read it. What the heck is with that conversation over there on the right? Are you as afraid as I am to find out what these kids know about "Camp Counselor Superboy?" You know, the guy prancing around in leotards? Does anyone have a theory other than "that love which we dare not speak its name"?This went from awesome to stupid from one panel to the next. I appreciate that Red didn't take no orders from no dames, but what is up with his little buddy checking to see if there's an engine in the bus? I know kids are pretty cynical these days, but who does that?Three things:1) Out of sheer principle, I refuse to pull a chain to make a statue blow a whistle. Maybe when I have enough real cops on
We came across this interesting book, History of Organized Camping: The First 100 Years by Eleanor Eells. It discusses the earliest camps, the people who founded them, and the first motivations behind summer camping. While the ideas of how camp is beneficial to children have changed over the years (from providing exercise, to acquiring specific knowledge, to training for social service), one thread has remained. These benefits derive from “getting away” from the ordinary modern world… out into nature, away from family and the social pressures of urban life. Camp was a respite, an antidote many parents understood as valuable. We’ve discussed this before, but certainly the same can be said today.
After breakfast we hike up the hill in camp to reach Castle Rock. Locking carabiners, harnesses, helmets, rock climbing shoes, and ropes… everything in place for a day on the rock. Put on the gear and tie into the rope with a follow-through figure eight knot. Wait for the belayer to get set and begin the commands. “On belay?” “Belay is on,” she says. “Climbing?” “Climb on,” you hear, and you’re ready to go. A left foot up and you’re off. Lean to the right. A foot switch. A little tricky spot, but you get it. Amazing view at the top. A quick rappel and you’re down. Great job!

Flight Sergeant Gray and Corporal Richardson are at Summer Camp at RAF Rheindhalen in Germany this week with 38 other cadets from across the UK. They flew out from London on Wednesday and the Flight Sergeant has been made senior cadet of the camp. This will be a very good experience for her and I am sure she will rise to the challenge, as she always does. The camp programme includes karting, bowling, shooting, drill, fieldcraft, sports and visits to a Movie Park, Museums and Arnhem Bridge (of WWII fame). The week will round off with a final evening disco. Sounds great, wish I was with them!Pic: Eusebius Church, Arnhem by Derek Lilly, morgueFile
There are summer camps that have resources to teach children English who speak another language at home. This is especially the case in the UK, where there are numerous summer camps and summer schools that cater to non-English speaking Europeans and non-Europeans who send their children to Britain in order to immerse them in the English language and culture. It is, however, very important to ask ahead of time if the summer camp offers English language instruction, or if it has appropriate staff and facilities to teach children English. Some camps do take it for granted that children who decide to attend all have an adequate command of the language, and thus the focus will be more on fun activities than on language instruction.
Camps that do offer English language instruction will always have qualified EFL or ESL teachers. In most cases, these teachers are over 21 years of age and have completed some, or all of their university education. Moreover, they will almost always be required t
Several more summer camps have been wait-listed, with an additional handful that have only one or two spaces available. I'll be updating the website later today with that information.-----------And, other preparations for the camps are going smoothly:At Home Materials are scheduled to arrive early next week. Our friendly FedEx man must love the beginning of Kindermusik semesters--mountains of boxes that rattle, jingle, and chime. I actually enjoy unpacking the materials and counting them to make sure we have every single CD, book, instrument, and puppet that will go home with my families this summer. Also, I'm putting the finishing touches on the shopping list for classroom materials. Summer camps give us the chance to add something extra to our Kindermusik classes--a developmentally-appropriate craft, cooking, science, or gardening activity at the end of class. Noah and I have been trying out some new ideas that have been lots of fun.-------------It's not too late to register for ou
