The first step is be both understanding and non-judgmental as you are both listening and accepting the harsh sometimes harmful words that are coming out of this persons’ mouth. Some of which may even be aimed at you out of both frustration and the uncontrollable rage this person is feeling inside.
Having been through the wanting to do this side several times I have quite a few ideas as to how one can both be helpful and understanding when someone is suicidal.
You have to first realize one thing: “This person is not broken there is no fixing them so don’t try to do this.” I know it is hard to not want to try to fix the issues for them but, that just isn’t possible. In many cases it is just the added stress making it hard to accept and deal with overall.

FDA scientists are investigating whether Chantix, a Pfizer Inc. drug used to help smokers quit cigarettes, also increases suicidal thoughts and violent behavior. The FDA said it is still gathering information about the drug, but advised doctors to monitor for behavior changes.
The FDA is investigating at least one death of a patient taking the drug. Family members of musician Carter Albrecht said Chantix may have caused the rage that ultimately led to his being shot in the head by his girlfriend's neighbor as he tried to kick down the man's door.

A study examining factors influencing suicidal ideation in a sample of victims of partner abuse living in shelters is presented in the May 2007 issue of Health Care for Women International. Fifty women were recruited from a regional shelter for battered women in a Midwestern city in the United States. Of the women sampled, fifty-eight percent reported having experienced intimate partner rape. More than one-third of the sample confirmed experiencing suicidal ideation at least "some of the time" within the previous week. Experiencing intimate partner rape was significantly associated with suicidal ideation and symptoms of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and depression. Results also revealed that both PTSD and depressive symptoms mediated the relationship between intimate partner rape and suicidal ideation. The study results highlight the importance of assessing suicide risk in victims of spousal abuse.
