      Kudos to Suffolk
Suffolk Downs over the years has been plagued with bad management, an ancient plant, and a legislature bent on not approving anything which may actually enhance racing and guarantee survival. That being said, the last change in ownership finally has yielded some positive results. The new owner Richard Fields has put in place a management team [...]

Oil Painting - fishing boat and net on Aldeburgh beach, Suffolk
"Standing Firm", Aldeburgh, Suffolk 14"x10".Oil on canvas covered board. Alistair Butt © 2008.One of the first things that attracted me to this view, apart from the interesting boat, was the small orange floats scattered on the ground amid a jumble of netting, ropes, rubber strips (makes walking across the shingle easy) etc. They must have been their some time as plants were growing through the ropes and netting. As for the boat itself, not only an interesting colour/color but the cabin it somewhat unusual in that it had a full size roof but the bit below only took up half to two thirds of the space, some shelter while working the winch? The marker posts and flags not only add interest but they also break up the line of the hull. The low early morning sun, in a clear sky, provide a wonderfu

      Suffolk Coast Meetings
By: Lindsay Chapman For many planning or attending a business meeting or conference, the image of a dull hotel room with an equally uninspiring view of one of the UK’s busy motorways is what will come to mind. Yet, a refreshingly different location is within easy reach.Imagine arriving at the beautiful Suffolk coast, breathing in refreshing, clean sea air and looking out over calming sea views of a shingle beach or Meare. Just a short distance from this tranquil location your meeting venue awaits.A choice of hotels, each within its own distinctive character and helpful, friendly staff, are just waiting for you and your colleagues to arrive. First-class business facilities coupled with excellent food to help feed the mind, will ensure you have a truly different meeting experience. Aldeborough, Suffolk coast. Watercolour/watercolor of fishing boats on the beach
"Early Evening" Aldeborough, Suffolk 9"x13". Watercolour/Watercolor. Alistair Butt © 2007.Aldeborough, on the Suffolk coast with a wonderful warm glow from an evening sun, casting lovely shadows from the boats etc. This painting has been produced from a combination of reference material. The evening light and foreground boat are from a detailed drawing done a few years ago and added to drawings and reference photos taken on a morning visit in July (see post). The shape of these wooden boats is wonderful but I also wanted to show the 'internal' elements, hence the view point and the combination of reference material. It was lovely to paint all the bits and bobs in the boat making sure that shapes, shadows etc looked correct. The rest of the painting was kept as simple as possible to balance the foreground boat and its detail.

      Suffolk Punch
Here is a real Suffolk Punch, original. I took this picture one of the times I was in England with my husband. He took me to a Shire Farm not far from Stratford Upon Avon. They had lots of animals and did demonstrations of the huge drafts and this boy was one of the rare real Suffolk Punch blood lines. I thought he was awesome and just gorgeous. Look at how stocky he is. To me he looks like a Punch should look like. When I compare him to a picture in a book of what one should look like, he's nearly perfect. Amazing! Please visit http://midwesthorse.blogspot.com/index.html for more horse stories, information and resources.
