      Sudan Census Troubles Continue
As I've noted here, Sudan's census is provoking conflict in the south and in Darfur. Today that trend continued: Up to 170 census monitors in southern Sudan have been told to return to the capital, Khartoum, after being accused of interfering with the count. Southern officials said the monitors were not approved and were mostly from the north of the country. [snip] Officials in Khartoum say [the census] is going well despite some people in Darfur refusing to take part. The BBC's Amber Henshaw in Khartoum says these problems in themselves will not stop the census continuing, but the fear is that the results will be rejected by anyone who does not like them, which could spark more disputes further down the line. More here. This just isn't looking good. High-profile but poorly run is a bad

      Sudan Update
News coming out of Sudan this week, as is often the case, has not been encouraging: Sudan's census, thrice-delayed, is now underway. The BBC offers the grim conclusion that "whatever the outcome of this census, the results are only going to spark further disputes down the road at a time when relations between north and south are already looking extremely shaky." Tensions are running high throughout the south, as evidenced by recent ethnic violence and clashes between the south's army and northern tribes. The New York Times calls attention to a theme I frequently harp on - how the conflicts between Chad and Sudan are making matters worse in Darfur. On a slightly more positive note, "An international coalition of 29 human rights groups has called for the arrest of two Sudanese suspects indic

      Sudan and Numbers
This week two disputes are running simultaneously about population figures in Sudan: one for the living and one for the dead. For someone like me, who has little faith in statistics even for the US (quick question: how many people live in the US? Are you sure?), the idea of accurate measurements coming out of a warzone is even dicier. First comes a census. Simple, right? They have 60,000 enumerators, 200 observers, and $100 million plus. What could go wrong? Well, in a move meant to "cement the 2005 peace deal" and "determine wealth and power-sharing," distorted measurements could bring drastic consequences for religious and racial minorities in the country. Recognizing this, southerners and westerners are already speaking out: The underdeveloped south has refused to be bound by the result

Extraordinary footage to be broadcast on Britain’s Channel 4 on March 14 shows an interview with Mohammed Hamdan, leader of 20,000 Janjaweed who control most of southern Darfur. No longer will I have to struggle with an aging laptop, now I have a machine with enough power to do all I want it to, and best of all a widescreen monitor - which is ideal for Photoshop. Once settled in the new house, the cartoons will continue, but for the time being expect the occasional quick sketch cartoon to appear.

Ok the teddy Bear fuss was ended hopefully in Sudan after the order of Omar El-Bashir to realise the British teacher after a whole week of a media circus I am afraid the Islam was harmed and Prophet Mohammed "PBUH" was harmed more in the way how the Sudanese government handled the case Already I have the feelings that it is a political game used by the Sudanese government to gain some pressure against the UK due to the later's position from the Darfur case , seriously Look as a Muslim I refuse totally any disrespect what so ever to Prophet Mohammed "PBUH" but as far as I read and I understand the lady did not name or choose by herself the name of the teddy bear ,it was a choice made by one of her students called Mohammed in the class and was welcomed by most students due to the popularity of the name of Mohammed in Sudan and in any Muslim society , so as you see the kids are the one who really started this fuss just like the famous Egyptian proverb says "The kids dig it and the grown

Sudan's President Pardons Teddy Bear Teacher
LONDON, Dec. 3 -- Sudan's president on Monday pardoned a British school teacher sentenced to two weeks in jail for allowing her students to name a teddy bear Muhammad, ending a delicate diplomatic tangle with what Prime Minister Gordon Brown called a victory for "common sense."President Omar al-Bashir pardoned Gillian Gibbons, 54, of Liverpool, after meeting with two Muslim members of Britain's House of Lords, Nazir Ahmed and Sayeeda Warsi, who had traveled to the predominantly Muslim African nation to lobby for her release."This is a case which is unfortunate, unintentional, innocent misunderstanding," Ahmed told reporters in Khartoum after the decision was announced. He said Gibbons was to be released Monday.Gibbons's case caused international outrage and strained relations between Britain and Sudan, whose government is under intense international pressure over the crisis in Sudan's Darfur region. Government officials and many British Muslim leaders said they believed Sudan's pr

Hamas, Teddy Bears in Sudan and the Muslim Brotherhood
There are two places where the Muslim Brotherhood exercises governmental power-Sudan and the Palestinian territories. That is, where it controls the levers of the state. It seems to me it is worth looking at these states to see how the Brotherhood would govern if given the chance, and to see the real agenda of the organization that claims to represent moderate, modernizing and tolerant interpretations of Islam. For an excellent summary of why the Muslim Brotherhood is such an important topic, see...(read more)

Teacher in Sudan held over teddy bear named Muhammad; faces 40 lashes
A seven-year-old Sudanese student today defended the British teacher accused of insulting Islam saying he had chosen to call a teddy bear Mohammad because it was his own name.Gillian Gibbons, a 54-year-old teacher, was arrested on Sunday after complaints that she had insulted Islam's Prophet by allowing the bear to be named Mohammad. She is facing a third night in jail without being formally charged. The boy said: "The teacher asked me what I wanted to call the teddy. I said Mohammad. I named it after my name." He said he was not thinking of Islam's Prophet when asked to suggest a name, adding most of the class agreed with his choice.Described as “timid and polite,” Ms Gibbons - facing 40 lashes for the 'offence' - had told friends how she was loving her life in the country. She was said to be “deeply distressed” in a police cell last night after learning she faces the barbaric lashing under the Muslim state’s strict sharia law.More...Via Drudge Report

Ms Gibbons, who joined the school in August, asked a seven-year-old girl to bring in her teddy bear and asked the class to pick names for it, he said. “They came up with eight names including Abdullah, Hassan and Muhammad,” Mr Boulos said, adding that she then had the children vote on

(Photo by: REUTERS/Stuart Price/AMIS/Handout (SUDAN)). After forcing their citizens into camps, the Sudanese government is now trying to drive them out of those camps. 2.5 million people or more are Internally Displaced Persons (IDP’s) from Sudan and most of these people end up in humanitarian camps. In October, the United Nations reported that the Sudanese government was forcing hundreds of families from the camp at Otash, near Nyala. The camp is home to 60,000 displaced persons in Southern Darfur. The United Nations has denounced the practice but human rights groups are calling it a violation of international law. John Holmes, under-secretary-general for Humanitarian Affairs said, “Given that security forces were threatening the displaced with sticks and rubber hoses at Otash camp, the involuntary

      Amazing wildlife news from Sudan
I just came across an amazing story from the Associated Press regarding wildlife returning to the Sudan. "Sudan's 22-year north-south civil war — Africa's longest and bloodiest conflict, killed some two million people. It also drove out large numbers of animals." "Now after two years of relative peace, they're dramatically back. Wildlife services estimate 7,000 elephants have returned, along with some 1,500 giraffes and about 500 oryx antelopes, both thought to have left Sudan forever. Lions, leopards and a wide variety of gazelles, some of them unique to Sudan, are being spotted, too." "In a February aerial survey, the U.S.-based Wildlife Conservation Society estimated herds of antelope and gazelle numbered 1.3 million." "It could well be the largest mammal migration on Earth," said Pau

The Berta on the border of Ethiopia and Sudan
Day 24 for 6th October, coinciding with Ramadan 2007 / 1428 Berta is one of several names for a people group who live on both sides of the Ethiopian and Sudanese borders. Some 160,000 Berta live in Ethiopian side. On the Sudanese side of the border there are probably about the same number. Most of them live in rural areas and not in the cities and towns. Just 9.7% of the people are considered literate. Up until 30 years ago visitors to the region wrote that Islam was very superficial, basically just in name only. However, today most Berta Muslims take their religion quite seriously although it is mixed with indigenous beliefs and practices. A handful of Christians live scattered throughout the area. Bible translation began with some Old Testament passages but unfortunately that work stopped two years ago when the Muslim translators were forbidden to help more on the project. Witnessing among the Berta has proven difficult - more prayer is needed! Prayer Requests: * Christians from oth

      Sudan, Palestine, Iraq…Darfur?
Sudan will accept Palestinian refugees from Iraq, the BBC reports: The offer came after Sudanese President Omar al-Bashir received a letter from the Palestinian leader, Mahmoud Abbas. The UN refugee agency has expressed concern over the deteriorating conditions for the hundreds of Palestinians in camps on the borders. They have tried to leave Iraq, but have been refused entry by Jordan and Syria…The UNHCR estimates about 34,000 Palestinians currently live in Iraq. Between 200 and 300 have been killed since the US-led invasion in 2003. Sudan’s actions are perhaps commendable on the surface. But in light of the refugee crises within Sudan involving actual Sudanese people, the government’s actions appear both strange and hypocritical. Is the Sudanese government only willing to help fellow Arabs? Are they attempting to curry favor in the Middle East? Whatever their motivation, it seems that even gestures such as these will do little to boost their image in the eyes of the

Olmert refuses to help all refugees from Sudan
Ehud Olmert has said that he'll absorb 500 refugees from Darfur, but expel the rest. But look at what he called them:In a decisive move to address the African refugee crisis, Prime Minister Ehud Olmert announced on Sunday that Israel has agreed to absorb 500 refugees from Darfur among the 2,800 Africans that have illegally entered into Israel."Those who have entered Israel illegally from Egypt will be returned to Egypt," government spokesman David Baker said, according to the Jerusalem Post. "These people are illegal economic migrants and will be returned."Is that implying that they're literally illegal immigrants looking to take advantage of state welfare and jobs like those infiltrating the US? These are people who've fled from the Islamic massacres against the black natives of Sudan, and are really here to find safety. They certainly haven't found it in Egypt, where police once massacred many refugees. They all deserve to find some safety from the barbarism they've been forced

Darfur, Sudan: "Not on My Watch"
Displaced women sit inside a temporary home in a camp in North Darfur. Photo by REUTERS/Michael Kamber. At the beginning of George W. Bush’s presidency he read a report on the Rwandan genocide. In the margins of that report he wrote the words, “Not on my watch”. It has been over three years since the beginning of the genocide in Darfur and nothing has been done. President Bush is, of course, not the only one responsible for not acting in the Darfur region to stop the genocide there. After the Holocaust we said, “never again”. After Rwanda in 1994 we said, “never again”. Why is it taking so long for Americans and the rest of the world to demand that their leaders do something about the atrocities that are occurring there? So far since the conflict began in 2003, over 400,000 people have died and more than 2.5 million civilians have been forced to flee their homes. These refugees now live in displaced camps in Sudan or in refugee camps in the neighb

      Sudan 'backs UN-led Darfur force'
From the BBC:Sudanese President Omar al-Bashir has agreed unconditionally to a joint UN-African Union peacekeeping force for Darfur, diplomats have said. South Africa's ambassador at the UN, Dumisani Kumalo, said Mr Bashir backed the move after a meeting with Security Council envoys in Khartoum. Sudan agreed to allow the 19,000-strong force earlier in the week but ultimate control has been a sticking-point. Violence in Darfur has killed more than 200,000 people and made 2.5m refugees. An existing AU force of 7,000 troops has struggled to contain the conflict. Much of the violence has been linked to clashes between government-sponsored Janjaweed militias and Darfur's rebel groups. moreI'm not at all inclined to believe he'll keep his word given the history. So pardon me for not rejoicing. Hopefully this time will be different but I doubt it.

It took effect in nineteen fifty-one. It defines genocide as actions taken with the goal to destroy, in whole or in part, a national, ethnic, racial or religious group. The acts listed include killing or causing serious phys
