Drama of domestic ennui too subtle for its own good
Reuters - This tale depicting the quiet existential despair of a married architect who finds his feelings reawakened by an attentive single woman is so muted and internal in its focus that its entire running time feels like a preamble to a drama that never quite begins.

      Subtle Tea
I walked by Subtle Tea Subtle Tea today and of course, I wanted to check it out. It's a well lit space that fits one large communal table, a window seat, and a few side seats; all of it was full. Luckily there was no line, so I didn't feel bad taking my time at the counter. In terms of baked goods and treats, nothing looked enticing. The selection was rather bare. The focus is teas, where the list was so long, I needed direction. I asked the girl for a recommendation because I wanted to try something interesting, yet I'm not a fan of fancy fruity teas or minty teas (for hot tea). She described the Almond Cookies Green Tea because it is their most popular. I was hesitant but agreed and she started brewing a cup, offering to replace it if I did not like it. On my initial taste, I wasn't sure

Do not meddle in the affairs of freegans, for they are subtle, and quick to make off with your discarded organic free-range chickens
I'm back on the Dive Team! (Junior Varsity, natch - if you missed the sad tale of my previous attempt at dumpster diving, you can read it right here.) I went out this evening with a different mentor (plus a fellow n00b), and we successfully rescued a whole bunch of fresh strawberries, maybe ten loaves of assorted sliced bread, some ground beef, shaved beef, sausages, and eggs, and a henhouse worth of organic free-range chickens from their landfill-rotting destiny. Nummy!New Mentor taught us padawans much about the subtle (and subtlety is key!) art of suburban gleaning. Her dive-fu is strong.Of course, none of us are really freegans. We all still eat food that someone valued enough to make us pay money for. But now that I've completed my first successful mission, I'm beginning to feel

      Subtle Forms of Separation
In my conversations with people, I meet many who say they know they are That (ala Nisargadatta Maharaj). No only do they say that who/what they really are is Ultimate Reality, but also then add additional things like ‘it only shines through sometimes more clearly than other times.’ We must be keenly aware of what we are saying and its implications, because if you say that That shines through sometimes clearly and sometimes not…what is really being said is that you are the vessel or channel for That, and you subtly separating yourself from That. That which we are is constant…it is never more or less. There also is no shining through…or some derivative of higher or true self. To say there is a higher or true self again is to separate…you are saying “you” are the lower

Subtle Significance: A Geometric Floral Tie
A subtle mauve heart first catches your attention, and as you zoom out, the variegated, geometric gold petals shimmer slightly, accentuated by a midnight blue backdrop. The last thing you'll notice is the hefty weave, which adds just the right amount of texture and a little masculine handle to the femininity of floral patterns. Significant, but subtle.

Is There A Subtle Structure To Life?
Sometimes things happen, and we don't know why. I think it's possible that at a higher level of intelligence, we could comprehend causality and destiny more effectively. What if things all do happen for a reason, and we just can't see it?Some people are pretty set on why things are the way they are. "The cup is there because I put it there." But why did you put it there? What made you put it right there? What thoughts did you have? Can people be constantly manipulated at the mental level in such a way as to cause them to set up things a certain way? What if we're all building a complex system of events, not because we want to or are aware of it, but for some other reason? And what if the final end to it all, the point, the meaning of everything, will be revealed sometime in the near future?2012?

Just look at their history: Dax Pierson left quadriplegic after a tragic tour-bus accident, being shamefully jacked for $15,000 in Barcelona and continuously suffering “also-ran” status as their releases repeatedly get critical acclaim. They carry on regardless though, recording and releasing exceptional albums. ‘Yell & Ice’, despite not even being a “proper album”, is their latest stellar effort and features some quite jaw dropping collaborations. Joined by Dan Boeckner from Wolf Parade, Tunde Adabimpe of TV on the Radio, Markus Acher of The Notwist, Chris Adams of Hood/Bracken and Yoni Wolf aka Why?, formerly of cLOUDDEAD, Subtle has quite a gaggle of friendly talent. The Subtle Approach - Subduing Anger & Resistance
miWisdom today… Getting angry or upset at others doesn’t normally work to one’s favour, as it creates resistance and throws the other person against you. Not only does the other person now see you as the enemy, they also completely resist what you have to say no matter how much logical sense your argument may have. This ends up being a “no win” situation for both parties. You don’t win because you haven’t been able to get your point across, and the other person doesn’t win because they have not learnt from their mistakes or their lack of understanding. Their Ego has simply impeded on making logical sense of the information that you are attempting to convey across to them. Instead of getting angry or arguing with the other person, the solution is to simply discuss the matter with them in a very subtle and calm manner. Focus on asking the right kinds of questions that will get this person thinking logically about their situation. These que

Subtle - For Hero: For Fool
As titles such as Ornette Coleman’s “Shape of Jazz to Come” or the Refused’s “Shape of Punk to Come” prove, artists throughout musical history have endeavored to earn distinction as purveyors of “the sound of the future”. One of the latest, and most worthy, contenders for this title is the hip-hop/experimental rock outfit Subtle. On its second album, For Hero: For Fool, the Oakland-based group presents a futuristic musical vision that is vivid, unsettling, and, above all, distinctive. Subtle is a group of six musicians, who, in addition to standard rock instruments like guitar, bass, and drums, play keyboard, cello, woodwinds. At first, the band’s title does not seem to describe its music very well. On the surface, the music is bold, and, much like the album’s cover, a striking collage. From the very first track, electronic beats, ethereal keyboards, repeating strings, sung melodies, and furious hip-hop vocals jostle each other, begging for listeners’ attention

      John Edwards and Subtle Racism
david mizner railed yesterday against a post by Matt Stoller accusing John Edwards of veiled racism. Matt Stoller’s thesis is this: John Edwards is talking about poverty, but he’s not talking to poor people. He may say that women’s rights are related to economic issues, but Clinton is actually framing her arguments around language women use. Edwards is talking as a college educated white guy to other college educated white guys. It’s the white man’s burden, and while well-meaning, it’s a little racist and annoying. I mean come on. There is no conspiracy to keep white men out of the Presidency. To which david responds: Stoller thinks it’s racist to appeal to morality to help the poor. But who said the poor people Edwards wants to help are black or brown? Not Edwards; he frequently points out that most poor people are white and that poverty isn’t a problem unique to cities. It’s Stoller who assumes that poor people are black or b

Why true romance in relationships is subtle, not flashy
When you consider how much importance today’s self-centered society attributes to independence and promiscuousness, you can understand why some people might think that old-fashioned romance just doesn’t exist in relationships anymore. The airwaves and the Internet are filled with examples of people shunning monogamous relationships and romance for self-gratification and indulgence, and romantic couples are usually presented as silly and out-of touch. Luckily, however, true romance really does still exist out there. It’s tough to point out old-fashioned romantics not because they are on the decline, but because old-fashioned romance by its nature is really the opposite of flashy; romance is quiet, romance is patient, and romance is subtle. If someone goes out of their way to show the world how romantic their relationship is, it’s usually not real romance they’re trying to promote at all. The flashy, shallow stuff may get the air time, but there are mill

With a decade of Labour rule upon us, the inpatient have already begun passing judgment (as opposed to speculation) on Blair's legacy. The more reasoned have looked back over the last ten years and asked what has changed? Optimists have pointed to Labour successes, pessimists to failings.Gordon Brown's eulogy to Blair is a perfect example of the former, as he highlights just how much Blair has achieved over the last decade. It seems that now he is leaving, people are realising just how much has been done and that it is not all bad. Even foreign policy, pre-Iraq, is seen as reasonable if not admirable. Most do not resent intervention in Afghanistan or Kosovo, those who remember it also admire Sierra Leone. There is, however, one element of Blair's recent history that refuses to be eroded by the recent revisions. That is the nature of the special relationship, that curious beast that somehow forced a confident and popular leader to subsume himself to a leader his ideological antithesis

You allow them by your beliefs. Beliefs are simply the thoughts you are in the habit of thinking. Not all beliefs are “right” or based on facts. Look at history for a staggering collection of examples. Beliefs Need Not Be Set in Stone We believed the earth was flat. We believed the heavens circled around the earth. At one time, we even believed bathing was unhealthy and eating tomatoes would kill us. If your belief system has you convinced that you are not worthy of reaching your dreams, or that financial independence could never happen to you, it’s time to re-examine your beliefs. These thoughts are merely habits. They are not based on fact. But, if you insist upon focusing your attention on limiting thoughts that are a part of your belief system, these habits of thought will be truth in your experience. You can cha

      Deadly Subtle Propaganda
From Orson Scott Card's review of Steve Berry's The Alexandria Link:This book is evil. I don't mean it's about evil.I mean that this book, to the degree that it is read by people ignorant of history (i.e., practically everybody), will move us closer to a future in which our society permits or even approves of the murder of Jews and the destruction of the state of Israel. Here's how it works. At the beginning of the book, we are shown a Palestinian during the 1948 war over the creation of the state of Israel. The scene is about how this Palestinian has been torturing a man he captured in order to find out what he is doing; then he kills him. But the torture is not treated in the fiction as anything other than a regrettable necessity; later, the character does in fact regret his actions that day. That's not what makes this book evil. No, it's the fact that Berry sets this scene against a background in which Israelis are systematically driving all the Palestinians out of Israel; the I
