Eva Mendes Talks About Substance Abuse In Interview Magazine
The interview is great. Eva Mendes talks about the substance abuse (alcohol, drugs). As she points out she is very sensible on this matter as recently she lost someone because of this kind of abuse. But it is obvious she doesn’t agree with being dependent on something like a substance. It’s a matter of life [...]

PTSD increases substance abuse risk and severity, worsens outcomes
From one-third to one-half of those seeking treatment for a substance-use disorder (SUD) may also have posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD). A multi-center study published in the journal Alcoholism: Clinical & Experimental Research of PTSD among individuals seeking treatment for substance abuse has found a greater prevalence of PTSD among those who were drug- rather than alcohol-dependent, and that having PTSD was associated with a more severe course and worse outcome for a SUD. "We already knew that there is a quite relevant association between PTSD and SUDs," said Martin Driessen, professor of psychiatry at Ev. Hospital Bielefeld in Germany, and corresponding author for the study. "More specifically, PTSD is a risk factor for the development of a SUD, particularly a drug dependence.

ADHD Drugs Won’t Raise Risk of Substance Abuse
This is great news for those parents whose children are on medications for ADHD. Obviously, if you can help your child do well without medications, that would be ideal. I usually recommend my patients who have ADHD symptoms see a nutritionist first. Many kids will have pancakes, sugar cereals, white [...]

      Substance Abuse Update
Some things never change. That is a great truth I have discovered. Many things are not what they appear to be and if we don't want to see something we usually won't see it until we choose to. As a behavioralist, one constantly learns just as much about oneself as will be discovered about the subject of therapy or treatment. The accurate diagnosing of a condition improves with repeated exposure to similar cases. Strong intuitive instincts can be quite useful and must never be ignored. In this life I believe there is a reason for everything that happens. I once believed that God allowed substance abusers to cross paths with me as punishment for some terrible sin I may have committed at some past time. What other explanation could there be? Over time I've grown to learn that many times it's not even remotely about this sick and clueless individual who chooses to slowly poison themself into oblivion and eventual death of the spirit, mind, and body. Reality often turns out to be

Substance Abuse Treatment and Dual Diagnosis
Substance abuse often co-occurs with severe mental illness. Research shows that there is a 60% lifetime incidence of severe mental illness and co-occurring substance abuse (Dual Diagnosis). Another way of saying this is that 6 out of 10 individuals with a severe mental illness will have substance abuse problems some time during their life. Unfortunately, severe mental illness and co-occurring substance abuse is associated with a variety of negative outcomes including: • Hospitalization • Suicide • Work/school problem • Problems with relationships • Non-compliance with dual diagnosis treatment Pychosocial approaches to dual diagnosis have been limited in their success. The majority of approaches are adopted from programs that address substance abuse problems without co-occurring mental illness. These approaches are yet to be proven for dually diagnosed individuals. Dual Diagnosis Treatment and Substance Abuse
Families who have mentally ill relatives whose problems are compounded by substance abuse problems face problems of enormous proportions. Mental health services are not well prepared to deal with patients having both afflictions. While the picture regarding dual diagnosis has not been very positive at this point, there are now signs that the problem is being recognized and there are an increasing number of drug treatment programs trying to address the treatment needs of people with both problems. Research studies are beginning to help us understand the scope of the problem. It is now generally agreed that as much as 50 percent of the mentally ill population also has a substance abuse problem. The drug most commonly used is alcohol, followed by marijuana and cocaine. Prescription drugs such as tranquilizers and sleeping medicines may also be abused. Substance abuse complicates almost every aspect of care for the person with mental illness. First of all, of course, these individuals are

      Substance Abuse Treatment
Aftercare in a Drug Treatment Program Once a person has gone through all the stages of the drug treatment program in substance abuse treatment and is ready to transition back to the ‘real world’, aftercare is like a kind of insurance on newfound sobriety. Before a person leaves either an inpatient addiction treatment program or an outpatient addiction treatment program, the counselor will most likely encourage him/her to set recovery and life goals. By creating this type of plan this newly sober person will have continued motivation and points on which they must focus during their transition. Planning for aftercare will also involve a renewed interest in relapse prevention and what to do in situations when a person wants to use or drink again. In many cases patients have had ‘home visits’ or ‘passes’ during substance abuse treatment on which they would have attended 12-step meetings or sought out other forms of support. Drug treatment programs often suggest that patients ge

Finding the right drug or substance abuse rehab is key!
It seems we can't pick up a newspaper or magazine, nor even read the internet news without seeing yet another hollywood star entering rehab for substance or chemical abuse. While it's sad to see yet another fallin' star, you also have to admire them for admitting they have a problem and wanting to receive help. When someone we care about is abusing substances or chemicals many times we want to help but we don't know how, or truly, we just aren't prepared.
