Neural Response to Catecholamine Depletion in Unmedicated Subjects With Major Depressive Disorder in Remission and Healthy Subjects Hasler G, Fromm S, Carlson PJ, Luckenbaugh DA, Waldeck T, Geraci M, Roiser JP, Neumeister A, Meyers N, Charney DS, Drevets WC. Context: The pathophysiologic mechanism of major depressive disorder (MDD) has been consistently associated with altered catecholaminergic function, especially with decreased dopamine neurotransmission, by various sources of largely indirect evidence. An instructive paradigm for more directly investigating the relationship between catecholaminergic function and depression has involved the mood response to experimental catecholamine depletion (CD). Objectives: To determine whether catecholaminerg

This is a challenge for those who would like to take it up - with a prize for the work I like best.Your task grasshopper, should you wish to take it, is to sketch your paintbrushes. They can be simply laid out in a row - look at Jim Dine's beautiful etching . He also did a fantastic etching of a row of cans with large paintbrushes standing in them that I'd love to own. (any rich sugar daddies out there take note ;>) )I often get the total beginners in my classes to sketch paintbrushes - they can be put right next the drawing area so it's easier to do the hand-eye coordination bit and build observational skills. Gaining confidence in achieving the shape and texture of the brushes - making the hair look like hair and the metal look shiny and reflective etc is excellent practice. I fi
Talking About Really Tough Subjects - Death, dying, illness. Why do we need to talk about that kind of thing?! There are some issues that we just don't want to talk about. Maybe we hide from them. Maybe we change the subject or avoid them. And sometimes these reactions in situations that can't be changed might be healthy. Denial and a wish not to talk can serve important purposes. And denial in the face of certain unchangeable situations may be a person's acceptable way of coping. I have found that the wish not to talk about death or dying may simply be the ill person's way of protecting the healthy person. More: continued here Other Review: Baby Frog Prince Costume (Apparel)
Written by: Mario R. Martin “Electronica sucks!” We’ve all heard it. Hell, at some point, we may all have felt it. But every once in a while, you hear, ahem, sorry…every once in a while you feel electronica in your heart and soul.Do you remember the first time you heard “Firestarter” by Prodigy, “Around The World” by Daft Punk or “South Side” by Moby? Sure you do. Now those are just the tracks that the mainstream allows you to hear. Regardless, electronica is one of those genres of music that evolves more than guitar bands. Maybe it’s the technology and its self-awareness within the genre that makes it flourish as one of the types of music that still sells through. How? The world has no idea, but it’s grateful it exists. And since every once in a while there’s some

The plan for the day was to visit the "Christmas Market", one of the longest established Christmas markets in the UK (held from the 6-9th Dec) in the lovely City of Lincoln. The down side, was the weather, either cloudy with some brighter periods or rain/heavy rain plus strong winds from the North. The top picture shows the cobbled area in front of the Cathedral with some of the stalls on the left. I had hoped for some more 'visually' interesting stalls/displays but came away with nothing of artistic value, not helped by the crowds or the poor light. For more information about the Cathedral visit the Cathedral SiteTaken from the site: Lincoln Cathedral is one of the finest medieval buildings in Europe, which towers above Lincoln, a prominent landmark for miles around. The imposing West Front incorporates the surviving part of the first Romanesque Cathedral dating from 1072. Most of the Cathedral dates from the 13th century when, inspired by the leadership of St Hugh (Bishop from 1186
The primary reason for this trip was to deliver a new batch of Watercolour/Watercolor and Oil Paintings, which for the last few days I've been getting ready, to Lincoln Joyce Fine Art gallery located in Great Bookham, Surrey. The next exhibition at Lincoln Joyce Fine Art (Christmas Show is a mixed exhibition by the gallery artists) starts on the 4th Dec with the private view and then opens from the 5th to 22nd Dec 2007. Contact the gallery via http://www.artgalleries.uk.com/ or telephone: 01372 458481 for more details.Due to multiple traffic delays, the details of which are not worth repeating but the day must go near the top in the list for the most amount of time waisted sitting in a car... all this resulted in very little time left to do much, not helped by the lack of the fore casted sunny breaks and going dark around 4 pm.The top two pictures give an idea of what Queensborough harbour/harbor has to offer. It would have been ideal with some sunlight, even though the tide was coming
Best Investment funds without expenses of acquisition: Subjects Of Research Of Investment funds Mutualist!By finding the best than investment funds without expenses of acquisition is not any easy charge because the higher funds of today often become of worse funds of execution of tomorrow and vice versa. According to the saying, "more they go to the top quickly, more they go down quickly." Temptation so that the average person invests in better funds of execution of this year overpowers almost. Unfortunately, the investors all concentrate too often only on the historical execution without considering how the funds carried out the higher results or if the results are bearable.Search For Investment funds MutualistThe better manner to carry out the search for investment funds mutualist is to concentrate on the factors which will hold the test of time such as expenditure of funds as well as the experiment of the manager of funds and the depth of its team of research. Just as student pilots train on simulators, you can photograph flying birds before trying to tackle real aircraft. ONE of our readers, Jasmine from Malta, wrote to me asking about photographing aircraft at an air show. I couldn’t help her the first time she enquired about shooting fireworks and now, I am sad to say that I have never shot an air show before. But, thinking back, I did remember taking some photos of seagulls in mid-flight. This may not compare with state-of-the-art fighter aircraft zooming across the sky but the fundamentals of shooting both are similar. Recently, I was invited to Japan by Nikon to witness the launch of their new DSLRs (Digital Single Lens Reflex cameras) and part of the trip was a tour to their high-tech manufacturing facilities in Sendai city where we watched brand new Nikon D3 cameras roll off the production line. It was like watching precision Swiss timepieces being assembled (come to think of it, I haven't witnessed that either but have seen it o

Austin firm tapped to help New Orleans plan on rebuilding businessFrom the Austin Business Journal:AngelouEconomics has secured a $200,000 contract to complete a regional economic development strategy for the New Orleans metropolitan area. Greater New Orleans Inc., a non-partisan group charged with bringing companies and jobs to that city, has tapped the Austin economic development consulting firm to develop a strategy looking at ways to improve the region's business climate over the next five years. "The goal is to create a road map for economic development going forward," says Pam Meyer, director of regional business development for GNO Inc. "We brought in Angelou(Economics) because of their site selection and economic development expertise to come up with a plan that includes determining and marketing our most competitive assets and coming up with specific action items we can implement." The plan slated for completion in December will focus on a 10-parish region of Southeast Louisi

A return trip to collect paintings from the Mall Galleries allowed for another day in London. At least that was the hope but due to maintenance work on parts of the London Underground 3-4 hours were lost. This resulted in very little time left and planned location visits scrapped until a future date. The two images above are from either end of the day. The morning was overcast but some breaks in the cloud gave hope for later on. It did clear but with bands of cloud moving across. The top picture is of St Katherine's Dock, which is situated just east of Tower Bridge and the Tower of London but center stage is a lovely Thames Barge. There are usually several barges in the dock but not berthed in the best position for a nice painting, being backed on all sides by tall modern buildings. This one was moving slowly to the lock and then to exit into the Thames, in doing so this allowing for a better backdrop. A pity the light, at the time, wasn't better... maybe better luck next time, should

You just have to love the State of Massachusetts!! When we live in Mass, there were over 40 registered Sex Offenders in the town. One of them was a dentist that molested patients while they were under sedation. In the town where I worked there was several "sex offender" schools way up in the hills. I kind of reminded me of Deliverance. Now to this story.Posted by Cory Doctorow, August 30, 2007 6:24 AM Mother Jones has a long, chilling feature on The Judge Rotenberg Education Center, a private radical behavior-modification school based in Canton, Mass. The school is run by a rogue behaviorist who uses discredited "punishment" techniques -- electroshock -- on children as young as nine to change their personalities. Matthew Israel, the school's $400,000/year executive director, straps homemade, overpowered shock apparatus to children (including severely autistic and retarded kids) and has his staff administer strong shocks for even minor infractions. Some children have been shocked thousa

Art Investment: The Best and Worst Selling Subjects Revealed
One of the most important factors that people should consider when investing in art is the effect that the subject of an artwork can have on its desirability and value. When looking at artworks to purchase as an investment it is very easy to give in to personal taste and preference instead of focusing on buying an artwork that will attract the largest number of potential buyers. Although you may like the subject of a particular artwork, your tastes and preferences may be in the minority so it is important that you are aware of which subjects are more popular and which are less popular before you make a purchase.
As a general rule artworks that contain sexually explicit nudity or graphic violence are out for obvious reasons. Portraits are also out for the simple reason that not many people would want to hang a painting of some random person in their house unless the artwork was painted by a very famous artist or the port

Sources of Subjects. “What shall I write about?” is the first question that inexperienced writers ask their literary advisers. “If you haven’t anything to write about why write at all?” might be an easy answer. Most persons as a matter of fact have plenty to write about but do not realize it. Not lack of subjects but inability to recognize the possibilities of what lies at hand is their real difficulty.
The best method of finding subjects is to look at every person every event every experience in short, at everything with a view to seeing whether or not it has possibilities for a special feature article. Even in the apparently prosaic round of everyday life will be found a variety of themes. A circular letter from a business firm announcing a new policy, a classified advertisement in a newspaper, the complaint of a scrub-woman, a new variety of fruit in the grocer’s window, an increase in the price of laundry work, a hurried
So last night I really worked on streamlining/simplifying the information overload that existed in the form of my incredibly disorganized 400GB external storage drive. This went well, although it caused me to stay up much later than I had intended. I noticed that while I sorted through all this information, it helped me to really focus on which topics/subjects I either care most about and/or are most interested in reading up on.So, that task mostly finished (I had been putting it off a long time), I only say "mostly" because I'm still editing my "music playlist" folder by deleting those songs from CD rips that I can't stand. You know, the ones you always skip over when listening straight through?Anyway, the connection all of this has to unschooling is that I realized I have such a large wealth of digital information to pass along to my son, when he comes of age. There are research materials on so many topics, some of which include astronomy/the universe, other science, philosophy, psyc
A little while ago, Trista of The Pumkin Patch tagged me for the “Where Do You Eat” meme. Since life has been busy with end of the school year activities, it has taken me a couple of weeks to play along.
I live in The Emerald State (Washington) in the United States of America. (According to this meme’s rules, I am supposed to state where I am located.) However, growing up in Los Angeles and then residing in Utah for 9 years has also played a role in where I like to eat.
And just so you know, most of these restaurants have full service bars which means I get to delight in a cherry or vanilla flavored coke when I visit them ! That is always a treat in my book.
1. Macaroni Grill. The bread here is divine, especially when dipped in olive oil, balsamic vinegar and freshly ground pepper. Yum. 154,389 students that have passed Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia (SPM) 2006 examination are eligible to further their studies at form six level (tingkatan enam). Certainly, the actual number of students that are enrolling into lower six this year will be far less than 154,389 since some of them have chosen to take A-levels or foundation programmes at private colleges, some have been selected to undergo Malaysian Matriculation Programme (Program Matrikulasi Malaysia), some have won Public Service Department (PSD or Jabatan Perkhidmatan Awam, JPA) scholarships, Petronas scholarships or other scholarships while some have decided to start working.SPM 2006 exam takers can visit Ministry of Education Malaysia website from the 10th of May onwards to check the form six 2007 offer details like secondary school name, stream offered and enrolment date. While I could not find the official enrolment date for form six 2007, I guess it will be on the 14th of May (Monday) as last year the date was May 15, 2
I’m not the hugest Work Out fan, but I do admire the fact that the show isn’t afraid to bring up tough subjects in life, other than weight loss. On tonight’s episode, the things that stuck with me the most was the opening few scenes with the group therapy and Skylab clients. One of the clients revealed that her father had committed suicide, and Jackie shared that her father had also committed suicide.
This is a subject that rings dear to my heart.
When I was a senior in high school, one of my male friends called me, in tears, because he was so upset that he was just going to kill himself rather than face his problems. It’s an incredible about of pressure for someone to basically say to you, “If you don’t convince me otherwise, I’m going to shoot myself right now.” He didn’t shoot himself. I don’t take credit for that, because I think that if he really wanted to shoot himself, he would have done it no matter what I would have

Malaysian Examination Syndicate (MES or Majlis Peperiksaan Malaysia) has proposed that SPM candidates can take a maximum of 12 subjects as there are many Form Four students indicating to sign up for more than the required seven subjects next year. These students believe that they waste no money even if they do not sit for the additional subjects during the actual SPM examination since the national examination fees will be abolished from 2007 onwards. The Star Online reported:A source said that some students had told their teachers that taking more subjects at no additional cost meant they could sit for them without preparing and hope to score if they were lucky.“Some say they can also skip the papers as nothing will be wasted. They have everything to gain as they just might do well. This is the wrong spirit but we can’t stop them as it is their choice,” a teacher said.As I read this, I am shocked by this kind of mentality. Do they lose nothing if they take more than usual number o
