The long-rumored two-door is a necessity for Toyota, which has been in dire need of a sports car since the demise of the MR2, Celica, and Supra in the U.S. For Subaru, it means greater acceptance and volumes for its unique boxer engine, and another sports car to enhance its performance image.
The automakers are not providing details of the horizontally-opposed engine in the new sports car, but the 2.0-liter and 2.5-liter turbocharged boxers would have to be the most serious candidates.

Sheetmetal up front is the biggest change for 2008. The Legacy gets a new, bigger, chromed-up grille; restyled bumpers front and rear with shorter overhangs; and new headlights and taillights. The Outback gets a bigger, more upright and rugged-looking grille, plus restyled fenders, restyled hood and new wheels. The R1e has a range of 50 miles (80 kilometers) and can post a top speed of 65 mph (104 kph). The wait is finally over. Subaru has released official photos and initial info on the new JDM-spec Impreza WRX STI. Details remain scant, however, as Subaru only tells us that the new STI is powered by a 16v 2.0L boxer with a twin-scroll turbo mated to a 6-speed manual. SI-DRIVE, multi-mode Drivers Control Center Differential (DCCD) and Vehicle Dynamics Control (VDC) are also standard. All of these things have been widely speculated on and/or reported already. Specific power numbers are conspicuously absent, so we'll have to wait for the rest of it when the car bows in Tokyo in a couple of weeks. Based on what's already been leaked, look for 304 horses and 311 lb-ft of torque in the Japanese-market model. Although you only can see the 2008 Subaru Impreza WRX STI completely debut on 2007 Tokyo Motor Show next month, here we give out the first official image of the 2008 Subaru Impreza WRX STI.Clearly seen is the 2008 Subaru Impreza WRX STI’s new hood scoop and pumped fenders as well as the new front bumper, which contains a pair of fog lights and side vents. Previous spy shots of the car revealed an integrated rear-diffuser and a quad-exhaust tailpipe arrangement at the rear.Most sources agree the new Subaru STI will develop up to 300hp (224kW) and 450Nm of torque from its turbocharged boxer engine.There’s no word if STI engineers will be able to match Mitsubishi’s new Evo with their own dual-clutch gearbox. Though Subaru engineers took careful measures to ensure their Impreza WRX STi tester wasn't spotted en route to the Nurburgring or at the track's staging area, eventually the car cover had to come off. It appears Subaru engineers were forced to unveil the production body of the new STi in order to test how the final form affects cooling. Though we just showed you this official teaser shot of the STi, these spy shots show the car outside in perfect light where every detail of the new design is cleary visible. Aside from some black tape, the blue STi underneath is practically naked. Note what appear to be air extractor vents or intake scoops on the sides of the front bumper, a design element we weren't entirely aware of before. We can also clearly see the rear wing now, which is less ostentatious than we were hoping. The STi has always been known for sporting an obnoxious rear wing, but it looks like that tradition will end with the 2008 model.

The Legacy line gets a facelift and a new engine choice.
Subaru’s debut of the freshened Legacy was capped with the announcement of the3.0 R, a 245-hp 3.0-liter six-cylinder Legacy sedan with a five-speed automatic transmission. The 3.0 R is similar to the Legacy 2.5GT spec.B, in that it comes with a stiffer suspension with Bilstein shocks, larger 18-inch wheels, and Subaru’s SI-Drive, which allows the driver to choose different electronic throttle settings to vary performance and efficiency. The 3.0 R will be positioned above spec.B, which has a lofty base price of $34,620. All 2008 Legacy and Outback models get a new, larger front grille with new headlamps and taillamps, but there is little visual difference from the previous model. The interior is slightly updated as well, and the remote entry key fob is now integrated into the key.
