Striking Writers!Roger Wilkorogerwilko@gmail.comI like it when there is a strike.  My first writing mentor was Steve Wasserman and he started helping me as a writer during the 1988 strike.  He explained how important it was to fight for the future.  He was right.  I am a SAG/AFTRA member, but not yet a WGA person. This is a fight worth fighting.  There is no way to really know how much money a person will make from their art.  However, there is a basic formula that I like to work with on any project.1.  The purchase.  When something is purchased I hope it involves a lot of money.  That way all those weeks, days and months when I had no money can at least make some sense. 2.  The ongoing money.  The only way to soften the blow of the next possible down time is with a regular flow of money.  That way the cycle is broken.  The artist can do their art and maybe even make a living.3. Lightning Striking at Night - Dead Tree SilhouetteThe other night we had a big thunderstorm over here, so naturally I was out with the camera in the cold and wet while others were inside snug and warm. Actually, I wasn't so foolish as to bring the camera outside during the rain, but after the storm passed over I went out looking for lightning shots. I took a few 30-second exposures, but the noise even at ISO 80 was disappointing. Decreasing the shutter speed by increments, eventually I got down to a 2-second exposure at ISO 80. Now for lightning, there's not much chance of getting a good shot with only a 2-second exposure. But I tried anyway. And what turned out was amazing...It was a one in a million chance. During the second exposure, a huge bolt of lightning split the sky - directly in the middle of the frame. And this is how it turned out. I find it amazing that I was able to get such a good shot on just the second try. The lightning is streaking through the darkened sky, ending

Although many martial artists know the correct point of striking for empi, there are still lots that think its best to strike with the tip of the elbow. Ask any Mauy Thai fighter, and they will say that the correct striking point is on the forearm, within two inches from the tip of the elbow. When the elbow is swung into the target either in a hook or uppercut fashion, this is the best part to strike with. If a spinning elbow strike is performed then the striking surface would be again two inches from the point, but on the upper arm tricep side. Although called an elbow strike, it is not the exact point of the elbow which is used for these strikes. The only time when it may be practical to use the point, is when delivering downward elbow strikes to a low target, back elbow strikes to a target behind and side elbow strikes. This is because the technique is not delivered in a circular motion as the other but in a straight line motion.

The roundhouse kick is used in many martial arts and is probably one of the most used kick there is. Its quick and can be very powerful. Another reason why it is used a lot is because there are different surfaces on the leg that can be used for striking. Thai boxers tend to use the shin for striking, as it can do the most damage. A shin kick to the thigh is like having a baseball bat wrapped around you. In other martial arts the top part of the instep is used. Its not as powerful as the shin but there is less chance of your opponent grabbing your leg as with the shin, and can be used in a jab like fashion. Personally i like using the shin when kicking to the legs and upper area, but i think when kicking to the midsection, the ball of foot is the most effective. Its a very awkward kick to defend as its small point of contact can thrust through peoples guard delivering a different kind of pain. To understand what i mean try tapping your ribs with your fist, then with just one knuckle. D

Grappling vs StrikingOne of my readers sent me an email asking me what I thought was better for a self defense system a style that incorporated striking methods or one with grappling methods? My response both. But don't be fooled when I say grappling I don't mean wrestling and the like. People see the UFC and think that they will have the upper hand on someone if they learn grappling skills. The answer is correct to some extent and incorrect in the other. On the street you don't have time playing the grappling chess game with an attacker. The longer you stay on the ground the more dangerous the situation becomes especially if your attacker has friends...you will get your head kicked in and curb bashed within seconds. This holds true for your striking skills also, self defense is not give and take, your not there to exchange blows. Have the battle is already won if you know these truths.
