The Benefits of Stock Options (Part 1)
Have you heard about the vast differences between private parks and public ones? The private park (owned by an individual) is taken care of very well. It always has the best-kept gardens, playgrounds, and bathrooms. The public park (owned by no individual) is poorly run and usually has the types of bathrooms that George Michael shows up to hang in. The reason for this is simple: when people take ownership in something, they take pride in what they own, and they have a duty to take care of it. If you don’t have a stake in something, you don’t care about it and, like the public park, it gets neglected and run down. This same basic principle, I believe, exists in the work environment. I trust most employees will work hard and do a great job, but I believe that you will always see someone’s full potential when he or she owns something. It’s like that rundown car you bought for your kid in high school–how stoked was he? He probably spent a ton of time cleaning it up, fixing

      Stock Options - Assume Exercise
One question sometimes comes up when doing a cap table of the equity in a company.  Should you assume that the stock options are exercised or not assume it?  Do you base it upon what will be at the present time and let future stock option exercises dilute the equity at a later point in time?  I’ve heard cases made for either way, but I think it’s much better to assume full exercise of the stock option.  You want to give the investors that hold the other stock the most conservative view on their holdings.  By not including the stock exercise, you show a higher percentage of ownership for them in the shorter term.  Then when the shares from the options are exercised there could be disappointment on their part, could they even realize they could get diluted down to such a lower level. If you have other stock options planned in the near future, over the next couple years, you might want to also put them into the capitalization plans.  Get them approv

      Stock Options...
This is a very rare practice in Singapore to give out stock options to the employees. Unless they are exceptionally good workers, most singaporean companies do not have this practice, even if it will not be among the Execs. However, today I was presented with some Stock Options of the Company, I wonder if this is good or bad. Good Means, I have some shares in the company now. Bad means, It is basically worthless papers unless we are listed.Since we are not far from it with the current outlook of the Vista Project, I guess, it might be good news. The bad is, I can only fully cash out all the options after Oct 18, 2008. If we IPO or get transfered to a holding company, then the options might be diluted. What does this means, it means, if I hang on in here, chances are if the company gets IPO/listed, I have a good sum of money, enough to pay off a car and housing loans, if not, I am stuck with a few pieces of worthless papers. It also means, I have to cheong hard in order to see the company
