Bill Turque of the Washington Post has a story today focusing on the closing of Stevens Elementary School in N.W. Many people, the reporter notes, are upset about the loss of a historic property. The school used to teach freed slaves, was opened in 1868 for this purpose, and isa school whose halls were walked by singer Roberta Flack, community activist and talk show host Petey Greene, Washington Post columnist Colbert I. King and former president Jimmy Carter's daughter, Amy. So instead of losing this site as a place to educate children the city should turn it over to the William E. Doar, Jr. Public Charter School for the Performing Arts. We would jump at the chance to have a downtown location at 21st and K Streets. The Feds have a witness who agreed to record his conversations with Stevens after the witness plead guilty to bribing government officials. The witness has also admitted remodeling Stevens' home for free.

Double bassist Eric Steffens, along with other Eastman School of Music students, recently transcribed and performed the entire "Illinois" album by Sufjan Stevens. This is a great album with dense orchestral textures, and the detail with which Eric and company recreate this album is stunning. The FBI raided the Alaska home of Senator Ted Stevens (R-Alaska). The Anchorage Daily News reports agents were at the home for over 10 hours and took away "undisclosed items from inside" as well as "pictures and videos." The raid is part of a widening corruption investigation on whether or not Stevens took bribes from an oil services company CEO who admitted to bribing Alaska politicians.Stevens is the longest serving Republican Senator ever, having represented Alaska in the US Senate since 1968. He was President pro tempore in the Republican majority, making him third in line for the Presidency between 2003 and 2007. Appointed to the Senate upon the death of Bob Bartlet (D-Alaska), he was first elected in a special election in 1970 and reelected ever since, never gaining less than 67% of the vote. He's up for reelection next year and has indicted he plans to run.

In his opinion in last weeks Supreme Court ruling regarding race based school assignments, Justice John Paul Stevens claims that "no Member of the Court that I joined in 1975 would have agreed with today's decision." This is pure nonsense as Stevens himself, in 1978, probably would have voted for the decision reached by the majority.In 1978 Justice Stevens wrote an opinion in which he dissents from Justice Powell’s opinion in the Bakke Case . Powell endorsed the concept that diversity was a compelling rational for the use of race based admissions by state colleges. Justice Stevens flat out rejected this notion. He believed it went far beyond what was allowed and mandated under Title VI as well as the Civil Rights Act of 1964.In fact, Justice Stevens evoked the following in his Bakke opinion (Quoting Hubert Humphrey): “if race is not a factor, we do not have to worry about discrimination because of race.” This sounds an awful lot like John Roberts statement that if we want to sto

PART 2Illinois sounds like The Sea and Cake collaborating with the high-school band from a Wes Anderson film on banjo-driven, pulsing meditations on Vince Guaraldi's music for Peanuts. Sufjan Stevens, the singer-songwriter behind the endeavor, is an earnest and whimsical young man who aims to record an album based on every state in the union, though this is just his second attempt since 2003's Michigan. Lavish praise has been heaped upon this precocious twenty-something, who weaves personal recollections, historical narratives, and strange facts together to create lush portraits of Midwestern life. It's not maudlin stuff, and the atypical instrumentation (strings, choirs, trumpets, vibes) is beyond gimmick. Halfway through "John Wayne Gacy, Jr.," when Stevens has you feeling true empathy for a serial killer, it's clear that he really is an artist of the highest order.
