MY MORNING WITH STEELERS VICE PRESIDENT ART ROONEY, JR.

In other instances, it may take a while for you to grasp the magnitude of the event. For me, I've been lucky enough to have several memorable occasions that have helped put this site "on the map" to some degree. But what I was able to partake in on

      2008 STEELERS SCHEDULE RELEASED
Everyone can now relax, as the Steelers' 2008 schedule (affectionately called "Murderer's Row") was just released. The Steelers have just five such contests in 2008. The schedule features a variety of other tough opponents, including New England, Dallas, the Giants, Indianapolis, San Diego. The Steelers' 2008 free agent parade has sure been exciting. Let's see...we've gone through the Hadnot guy, the Leave Britney Alone Guy, a Patriot, a special teamer from Green Bay, and a former Viking. I think it was Randy Moss. Or maybe it was Mewelde Moore. I often confuse the two.On Tuesday, Chiefs OLB Keyaron Fox apparently had nothing better to do, so he paid a visit to Pittsburgh, a team with virtually no cap room. Although I doubt it would take much to sign a guy who couldn't win a starting job on a 4-12 team.Fox, a 6'3", 235-pounder, is an American football player who currently plays linebacker for the Kansas City Chiefs, according to Wikipedia. Patriots crushed Steelers - Bluffing can be fatal
After all the exciting NFL games on Sunday, one of the most bitter NFL Scores was the way New England smashed the Pittsburgh Steelers 13-34.  Something definitely not expected since the Patriots had a 2-almost-lost-game streak. Everyone thought the Steelers would finally make it happen. Why didn't they?.  Even though the Patriots have actually won every game, it was kinda obvious they didn't seem to be doing that much of an effort, and other NFL teams were really close to making them fall from the "undefeated" position. Pittsburgh looked much stronger than those other teams and had all that it took to beat them for the first time this 2007 NFL Season. Instead of getting at least closer than the rest, they ended up losing by a big point difference. Not only that, but they actually went blank on the last 2 quarters. No scoring at all.  Some are saying that it was the bluff that made the Patriots play faster and be really aggresive this time. Anthony Smith (Steelers' free

Jets Break Losing Streak in Outlasting Steelers 19-16 in OT
The New York Jets have been close many times this season, and on Sunday in the upset of the day they finally cashed in, beating the clearly underestimating Pittsburgh Steelers 19-16 in overtime at the Meadowlands. Mike Nugent kicked a 38-yard field goal in overtime, coming after returner Leon Washington took back a punt 26 yards to set up the Jets in excellent field position for their game-winning drive. The Steelers played by far their worst game of the season, and one week after people were putting them on the level of the Colts and maybe even the Pats, the black and gold were beaten up by a team that had won just one game heading into Sunday’s action. The blame for this garbage are plenty for the now 7-3 Steelers. They could not, as usual as of late, protect Ben Roethlisberger much at all, and allowed a season-high seven sacks. They could not get the running game going, and their run defense was beaten for their first 100+ yard game in over two seasons. Thomas Jones had

The Denver Broncos seemed to be on the verge of losing grip on their 2007 season, and with the Pittsburgh Steelers coming to town things didn’t appear to be getting any better. At least that’s how it appeared. The Broncos played their best game of the season on the National Sunday night spotlight, and a Jason Elam 49-yard field goal as time expired sealed a 31-28 win over the big, bad Steelers who had no answer for the clutch play of Broncos QB Jay Cutler. The Steelers allowed themselves to get down by 14 points twice, once after a sack and fumble that was returned for a score by rookie Tim Crowder, and again as Cutler threw a score on the last play of the 3rd quarter. Pittsburgh thrower Ben Roethlisberger both times brought the team back, the second time hitting rookie tight end Matt Spateh with a 13-yard score that tied the game at 28 with 1:10 to go. Cards Have Edge in 21-14 Win Over Steelers
While I am still not a fan of switching QB’s around like Cardinals coach Ken Whisenhunt is currently doing with Matt Leinart and Kurt Warner, the stragety worked on Sunday. The Cardinals used both QB’s in key touchdown drives that helped out as Arizona improved to 2-2 with a 21-14 home win over the formerly unbeaten Pittsburgh Steelers. The other play of the game was rookie Steve Breston breaking a punt return 73 yards that gave the Cards a lead they would not lose. The punt came as the Cards had accepted a penalty on the Steelers, making them re-kick, and Breston made them pay. The Steelers were out of character for their first loss of the 2007 season. They were unable to run the ball much of the day, as top rusher Willie Parker was held to just 37 yards on 19 carries. Parker had started the season with three straight 100+ yard games. The defense was unable to get off the field in key situations, as they allowed the clinching drive to go 82 yards and kill about 7 minute

Steelers RB Parker Will be Fed Until the Wheels fall off
Steelers coach Mike Tomlin made a promise about Willie Parker at his news conference that challenged the “Curse of 370,” the very reason many believe Foster broke down. “We’re going to ride Willie until the wheels come off,” Tomlin declared. “He’s game for that, he’s in great physical condition, he wants the ball, he’s a competitor and he’s showing he’s capable of doing that.” “He’s getting better with each carry as these games go on, and I’m starting to realize that about him. He’s a rhythm runner,” Tomlin said. “So we’re going to feed him. We’re not going to make any bones about that.” Reported by Ed Bouchette, Pittsburgh Post Gazette

Why the Cincinnati Bengals Will Be Better Than the Steelers in 2007 (HA!)
A few months back, I threw out a challenge to the followers of every other NFL team out there: tell us why your team will be better than the Pittsburgh Steelers in 2007. Plenty of eager writers told you exactly why they thought they'll be superior to the black and gold. Several teams had authors lined up that apparently backed out (probably due to the fact that they had no argument), and sadly, I thought Cincinnati's rep was going to be one of them. But fear not, my inbox found one last essay in this series. And after their showing on Sunday, I'd love to hear more on this topic.Today's author goes only by the name of Jason, although if I was a Bengal fan I'd prefer to remain semi-anonymous as well. At this point, I'll leave it up to him to defend the men that allowed 51 points to the Browns on Sunday, a team that scored a grand total of 7 against the Steelers... Steelers Move to 6-1 in Preseason
STEELERS (2-0) 26BILLS (0-2) 3Before I get into my Steeler recap, congratulations to the eventual Super Bowl XLII champions, the Cincinnati Bengals. It was a job well done on Sunday, surrendering 51 points to the mighty Cleveland Browns, a franchise so unorganized that they traded their opening-day QB just a few days after he started the season. Keep up the good work, and remember, it's not whether you win or lose, it's how you plan your touchdown celebrations. To the angst-ridden Browns fans, enjoy this day. I guess you don't need Brady Quinn after all. And don't worry about dumping your opening day QB. All Belichick disciples do it. As for the Steeler game, it was far less interesting and ran exactly to the script everyone imagined. The Steelers wore throwback uniforms, the Steelers dominated on defense, the Steelers moved the ball on offense, the Steelers won the game. Game, set, match, fold up your 75th Anniversary Terrible Towel, wash off your face paint, and drive home safely

They have roughly 189 quarterbacks on their roster, including one that says he's retired, one that's married to a Playmate, one whose name has surfaced in a gambling ring (who hails from Pittsburgh, no less), and one who has a guy's initials tattooed on his leg. To try and convince you that the Philadelphia Eagles will be superior to the Steelers in 2007.I'm of the belief that we'd really develop more of a dislike for the Eagles given the opportunity. I think we should play them every year. Need proof? Watch a Penguins-Flyers game. Based on hockey, our cities loathe each other. Why the NFL hasn't caught on to this idea yet, I don't know. So what do I know about the Eagles? Well, let's see:--They have a QB who gets hurt every year, an epidemic so bad that they used a high pick to draft his eventual successor--Andy Reid may be a great coach, but as a parent, let's say he ha

They've been the butt of many jokes around NFL followers in recent years, be it because of Cheech Williams, The Great Daunte Culpepper Experiment, The Great Nick Saban Experiment, and the current head coach of your Pitt Panthers. This year, it's supposed to be different. They have a new coach, a new/old quarterback, and a banged-up linebacker who spent his offseason sparring Bengals in Vegas casinos. Eagles vs Steelers
Last Time They Met: August 25, 2006: Eagles 16, Steelers 7In their fourth preseason game last season, the Eagles looked sharp in the 16-7 win over Pittsburgh. With nearly all of the starters playing for the final time before the start of the regular season, quarterback Donovan McNabb completed 7 of 9 passes for 79 yards. Kicker David Akers helped the Eagles jump out to a lead with three field goals (40, 49 and 52 yards), and wide receiver Greg Lewis sealed the win with a 61-yard touchdown grab. On the other side of the ball, the Eagles forced Pittsburgh into four turnovers – two fumbles and two interceptions.2006 Season Review:After taking home the Lombardi Trophy in 2005, last year was far from super for the Steelers. The defending champs struggled to a 2-6 start, before climbing to mediocrity to end the season at 8-8. In his 15th and final year as head coach, Bill Cowher didn't get the same play out of Ben Rothlisberger. The quarterback followed a 17-touchdown, nine-interception s

      2007 Pittsburgh Steelers Preview
Last year, I had the honor of writing the Deadspin.com preview of the defending Super Bowl champions. In a city that endured heartbreak after heartbreak ever since our daddy's Steelers won their fourth title, it was kind of a big deal to finally get over the top. To commemorate this occasion, I penned a 3,300-word valentine to my favorite team, entitled, "50 Reasons Why I Love the Steelers", covering all things Steelers, from Whizzer White to "Drink Like a Champion". The fruits of my labor? One of the most disappointing championship defenses in the history of organized sports. A 2-6 start. A loss to the lowly Oakland Raiders. Two dismembering losses at the hands of division rival Baltimore. And ultimately, the loss of our beloved Coach Cowher. For my next Deadspin preview, I was asked to write about the 2007 Pittsburgh Pirates. With the memory of the Steelers' season fresh in my mind, I took a slightly less optimistic angle, which resulted in "79 Reasons Why It's Hard To Be a Pira

Bettis Taking Shots and Cowher and Steelers in New Book
The Bus has come out of the garage, and is taking some heavy shots as his former coach. Jerome Bettis, former Steelers running back and future Hall of Famer, is about to release a book about his career - “The Bus: My Life in and Out of a Helmet,” and in the book there are some interesting tidbits about his playing days under now former head coach Bill Cowher. Bettis was open about his disagreements with Cowher, and it seems like his biggest miff came back in 2003 when he was replaced by then smaller, faster back Amos Zereoue. The book states: “I showed up at camp thinking it was going to be an open competition, but in reality, the choice had already been made. … When Coach made the decision, he said it was based on a gut feeling. A gut feeling? I had something to prove. But it’s hard to prove something if you’re not given a fair shake.” To not much of a surprise, Cowher had no comments about the writings of the Bus. By Chris Colston, USA TODAY LATROBE, Pa. — In the course of winning five Super Bowl titles, the Pittsburgh Steelers became synonymous with defense, conjuring images such as Mean Joe Greene, semi-toothless Jack Lambert and Troy Polamalu’s bouncing locks. “People in Pittsburgh like their defense,” said third-year tight end Heath Miller. Steelers QB Roethlisberger Given More Freedom
Offensive coordinator Bruce Arians wants to work on the no-huddle offense and will probably break it out soon in one of the preseason games. The Steelers also used it last season in the preseason, coincidentally against the Vikings when Mike Tomlin was their defensive coordinator, but they used it sparingly, if at all, in the regular season. Arians has given QB Ben Roethlisberger more freedom with some of the play-calling and pass protections this season. Steelers Erect Name for New Mascot
As we have mentioned previously, The Jaunt was not too big on the gritty Steelers adopting a mascot prior to this season. However, that choice seems a hell of a lot wiser than the team's recent choice of the actual name for the mascot. After mulling over approximately 70,000 entries from fans, the organization decided to go with the name that sounded most like that of a gay porn star. Steely McBeam. The name was submitted by Diane Roles of Valencia, who receives a VIP package for four to the Steelers' Sept. 16 home opener against the Buffalo Bills. She will also get an authentic Steelers throwback helmet and jersey, just like those that will be worn by the team that day. Are you kidding me? Aww man, I just flat out feel bad for those old school; die hard Steelers fans who don't even want this goofy mascot in the first place. The fans really got it up the ass on this one. Ed Bouchette of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reports that the Pittsburgh Steelers have signed their first-round pick LB Lawrence Timmons out of Florida State to a five-year contract. The report states that Timmons will receive slightly less than $12 million in base pay and up to $15 million, including incentives. He will also receive various guaranteed bonuses of $8,053,000 that includes signing and roster bonuses throughout his five-year deal. Why does this play a factor into the Jets? Timmons was selected 15th overall by the Jets in the NFL Draft in April, just one spot later than the Jets selected cornerback Darrelle Revis. Having Timmons signed pretty much introduces you to what kind of offer the Jets and Revis will discuss. With that said, expect Revis to get a contract very similar with a bit more numbers due to his pick selection. …For what it’s worth, last year’s pick at #14 overall was defensive tackle Broderick Bunkley by the Philadelphia Eagles and signed
