It gives a good idea of the mighty chasm between numbers and facts - and the ways in which people deliberately and accidentally mix up the two.Much of the time with the media's use of statistics the problem is ignorance - simple mistakes that a little thought could avoid. A report was published today in the UK showing that HRT was linked to significantly more cases of ovarian cancer.I think the figure was something like a 20% increase in the likelihood of ovarian cancer.Clearly what was meant was that the increase found was statistically significant but I wonder how many people will interpret that as morally, socially, medically or personally significant.Statistical significance simply means that the apparent 20% increase is unlikely to be accounted for by random fluctuations in the data. It is saying that there is a 95% (or 99% or whatever level of statistical test was performed) chance that this is a genuine signal standing out from the background noise of fluctuations.The moral significance is up to the individual patient and doctor.
