To make the Start menu display only the applications you want, rather than the default determined by Microsoft, right-click in an empty section of the Start menu's left column, and select Properties > Start Menu > Customize. Here you'll find a list of your most frequently used programs. (XP keeps track of what you use and what you don't, then updates this list dynamically.) Streamline your Start Menu
Here’s a little trick I use to efficiently open programs from the start menu. I add a number to my frequently used shortcuts in each directory, that way I can easily access any program simply by pressing the Windows Key, then P followed by a sequence of numbers corresponding to folders and programs. Here’s a screenshot of my start menu — I prefer the classic menu even in XP since I find it cleaner and more useful. Of course, it also helps to have programs grouped and arranged in some sort of logical sequence with very frequently used programs available immediately in the start menu. Alternatively, you can come up with creative folder names that all start with a different letter. However, it is important to make sure no two folders start with the same letter or number, that way pressing the first letter will automatically open the next menu instead of just highlighting it. This will relieve some dependence on the mouse (it’s easy to miss the folder you wan

It also has some settings in it that you can change if you want. The default look of the start menu is the preferred look of many users, it has everything within a couple of clicks, but some of you guys out there may wish to have it back in the old style menu, this menu style looks similar to the previous versions of Windows. Animated 3D User Photo in Vista's Start Menu
Andreas Verhoeven from AeroXperience (www.aeroxp.org) brings us a really sweet add-on for Vista. I know I am tired from the pretty but yet static user icon on the start menu - so with some clever programming he brings us back what Microsoft threw out in the first place. I'll let the following video speak for itself (watch the User Icon at the top right side!). If you cannot see the start menu, please press play at the bottom! It's a short video: All you have to do in order to get the same effect is run the little app. Do note that the application dynamically loads itself into explorer.exe (for which you might need elevated rights or be logged in as administrator). Because of this, the smallest mistake in this application will make explorer.exe go down. So, do I need to say: You use this application at your own risk! If you want this running at all times - just add it to your Startup folder :) Via: AeroXperience forums (www.aeroxp.com) (this thread)Get the app
