      Crown of Thorns Starfish...
This is a Crown of Thorns star. These guys are NOT a favorite critter of ours as they eat coral, and the spines are venemnous to boot. You can see this particular star has just finished off eating the cauliflower coral behind it and is moving on to it's next meal. Corals are a colonial critter, growing on top of the skeleton of previous polyps. The COT starfish will eat the live outer layer, and the coral may or may not ever recover. As far as the poison content of the spines of this star... it is not to be messed with. I've run into a lot of people who have tried touching it "just to see" if it's sharp or hurts.... It is sharp, will poke through gloves and skin easily, and will mess the contact site up for months, I know people who have visible damage years later - it's not a simple be

      Starfish100 - Untrue
Believe it or not this is the sound of a Brazilian band, I know this because their myspace says so and they’ve got song titles like ‘Nao Volta Mais’ and ‘Minha Gerao’. Seems that good old indie pop has spread its tentacles far and wide enough to take in the sprawling metropolis that is Sao Paulo. Starfish100 have a list of classic indie influences as long as your arm and it permeates through on this fabulous tune. ‘Untrue’ is so unashamedly inoffensive it could well have become a Stereophonics dirge had it not been for the boys from Brazil’s eye for a killer melody. Who’d have thought that that tired old do-do-do cliché could still be used to devastating effect in a modern day pop song, maybe we've found the Southern Hemisphere's Apples in Stereo. They shoot, they score.

WISDOM OF THE WORLD - WEEK 7 - STARFISH
A man and his grandson went for a walk down to the beach. It had been a rough day and the tide had been high. When they arrived they found that hundreds of thousands of starfish and been thrown onto the beach by the storm and they were all dying. Immediately the man started to pick the starfish up and throw them back into the sea. The boy, copying his grandfather’s example, started to do likewise. After about half an hour the boy was getting tired. He straightened up and looked around him. He was struck by the amount of starfish still on the beach. He turned to the old man. “Grandfather, what is the point of this,” he said. “Look at all those starfish dying. What difference can we possibly make?” His grandfather, who was picking up a starfish, turned and looked at the boy right i

      The Starfish
I want to thank everyone’s kind and comforting words yesterday for me, and for little Gratzy who died yesterday. I slept okay last night, only dreamed a little bit of the situation. And not horribly, thank the gods. I hate having awful dreams and I was afraid I would and I would feel [...]

      Orbea variegata-Starfish Cactus, Toad Cactus
Orbeas are a genus of succulent plants in the Apocynacea family, they're evergreen- leafless plants native to Africa. Starfish Cactus and Toad Cactus are misleading common names because this plant is not a cacti-it is a succulent. A better common name for this Orbea is Carrion Flower or African Carrion Flower.I find this succulent plant to be easy to grow indoors and I think I've discovered the trick to get it to flower. When growing cacti and succulent plants the trick is to mimic the growing conditions in the wild when we're growing them indoors. In the winter I reduce the amount of water I give my succulents and will only water when I notice some shrinking of the stems of this Orbea. Since the plant goes dormant in the winter giving it bright light isn't really an issue- it does well in a west facing window. This succulent came to be in my possession after I was given three cuttings by a member of a cactus and succulent forum I frequent. The first year I grew my cuttings on the f

This is an awesome video I found at BotJunkie.com of a smart robot learning how to walk. "Starfish will flail its limbs around and take note of which movements alter its position in space. It’ll then learn to keep nothing but those arm movements that propel it in the direction it wants to go" Read The Entire Post... “Starfish” - Pawleys Island, South Carolina
This image has been posted before, but the image and additional comments did not make the move from Blogger to WordPress during the mass transfer of files. © 2005 - Michael Brown * Copying/downloading of images is prohibited. “Starfish” Pawleys Island, South Carolina   My youngest son was playing about on Pawleys Island early one morning, exploring with the larger camera and lens, and I found this scene while using my casual camera, … the Canon G3. That little camera is wonderful to use for images of family get togethers, maybe a few landscapes, … and still works great for something close. Take care everyone, and thanks for visiting!
