      Standards to the People!
It is with an eerie, but rejuvenating, sense of deja vu that I just received word of what may be the first public demonstration in support of open standards. And what could be more of a ratification of the concept of Civil ICT Standards than the news that ordinary citizens are taking to the streets in their defense?

      Standards of Insanity
Just in: My roommate, a couple hallmates and I were just watching the stellar comedy, “Beerfest,” on William and Mary’s Campus Channel. Although the movie contained topless women, incessant swearing and generally mature themes, none of this “objectionable” material was edited out - (and in my opinion, rightly so; we’re all over 17 and if there’s going [...]

Tier 3 emission standards will take effect in 2012, followed by Tier 4 in 2015. The final requirements will bring earlier and greater emission reductions of NOx and PM from the locomotive and marine sectors than the proposed program envisioned. This is accomplished by finalizing the first-ever national standards for remanufactured large commercial marine diesel engines (above 600kW) and starting Tier 4 NOx requirem

Higher Lending Standards Lowers Demand for Housing
From the Oregonian:Raising the bar for obtaining mortgage insurance in central Oregon's Deschutes County likely won't affect many of the buyers at the region's proliferating destination resort developments because those buyers generally can put 20 percent down on their home purchases, said Tom Greene, principal broker at RE/MAX Equity Group in Bend and president of the Central Oregon Association of Realtors. But, Greene said, the new rules could harm first-time homebuyers with little cash to put into a purchase. "It's going to be tough if that portion of the market goes away," he said. But things are already tough in Bend's market. From 2006 to 2007, the median home price fell by nearly 2 percent in Bend, from $351,978 to $345,000, according to the Central Oregon Association of Realtors. Thi

Did Laurel And Hardy Promote Child Molestation, Sexual Harassment And Violence By Today's Standards?
TV Land (ThaLunatic Daily) -- You hear it all the time, Hollywood is getting more vulgar. The media gets worse and worse. Society gets stranger and stranger. Really? How sure are you of this.I argue that society has always been strange - we are just more politicized and politically correct now. Think not?Watch the video above. It's a funny episode of Laurel and Hardy, a popular comedian duo from the 1930's. In this short clip, Laural and Hardy are joking about child molesters, commit egregious acts of sexual harassment and promote violence all within 5 minutes. We don't mean to seriously say Laurel and Hardy promoted anything egregious. We just think that human nature has a blind sight to things that later seem seriously dysfunctional.Maybe things aren't getting worse and worse.

      CORAL Publishes Marine Recreation Standards
CORAL publishes first ever regional standards for diving, snorkeling and boating activities. In areas of high volume tourism, repeated direct contact with the reef poses an immediate threat. Hundreds of boat groundings and hundreds of thousands of tourist interactions each year reduce sections of coral reef to rubble. Human contact also reduces coral’s resilience to other stressors such as rising sea temperatures and diseases. CORAL's "Voluntary Standards for Marine Recreation in the Mesoamerican Reef System" (PDF 668 KB) provides detailed requirements for environmentally friendly and safety conscious marine tourism businesses in the areas of diving, snorkeling, and boating and can be used by a variety of different groups such as: Concerned tourists to help them choos

Woohoo! New Standards Drastically Cut Locomotive and Marine Diesel Pollution
From EPA yosemite.epa.gov  (Washington, D.C. - March 14, 2008) New tough emissions standards will slash pollution from locomotive and marine diesel engines by up to 90 percent, helping Americans to breathe cleaner air as soon as this year.   "Today EPA is fitting another important piece into the clean diesel puzzle by cleaning emissions from our trains and boats," said EPA Administrator Stephen L. Johnson. "As more and more goods flow through our ports and railways, EPA is cutting diesel emissions at their source – keeping our nation on track toward a clean, healthy, productive tomorrow."   When fully implemented, these new standards will reduce soot or particulate matter (PM) by 90 percent or 27,000 tons and reduce nitrogen oxides emissions (NOx) by 80 percent o

Controversy grows amid green autos - Tightening emissions standards brings more efficient cars to the market, but not all are pleased
GENEVA — Car makers are showing off their leanest, greenest mass-market models through Sunday in anticipation of stricter European emissions controls at the Geneva International Motor Show. A host of small cars are celebrating their debut in Geneva, including production versions of Ford Motor Co.’s new, fuel-stingy Fiesta and Toyota Motor Corp.’s three-seater iQ, and a concept version of Fiat’s 500 Aria. All three boast carbon dioxide emissions of under 100 grams per kilometer, which will help those manufacturers beat an EU proposal for a fleet average of 130 grams by 2012. Environment ministers from the 27-nation bloc — the world’s biggest consumer market with 490 million people — met in Brussels earlier last week to discuss the plan, which has ru

Ashutosh Gowarikar and Ronnie Screwwala have smelted the genius of India and wrought a priceless jewel – a Kohinoor of indescribable beauty.
