      Those Pesky Squirrels
Squirrels. We live in a wooded community.  With squirrels.  Many squirrels.  We co-inhabit, nicely. I've always thought they were kinda cute, in a stay-away-from-me-in-case-you-have-rabies-sorta-way. Well. The squirrels are driving me NUTS. We have this lovely bird feeder filled with lovely seed for the lovely cardinal couple who live in our backyard.   And the pesky squirrels think the love

Walking Off the Big Apple's Squirrels in New York You Tube Film Festival
I'm getting ready for the Tribeca Film Festival today, organizing a daily schedule of film screenings, roundtables, and press events. I am one of 2,000 accredited press people, by the way. As I mentioned, I'm writing a second blog about film matters for Reframe, a website of the Tribeca Film Institute. This morning, after filing a post on the Visual Artist as Documentary Subject, I walked up Fifth Avenue to check out the Target-Tribeca Filmmakers Lounge, a meeting place for badge holders. I found a dazzling room of contemporary furniture and lighting, buzzing with pre-festival action and bathed in Target's emblematic reds and target shapes. It takes a lot to organize such as festival. Then I thought, "How about if I started a modest online festival, one perhaps built around a NY theme that

Are the squirrels watching their cholesterol?
I had seen a cute and simple craft on the internet that I thought would be the perfect little Saturday afternoon mommy-and-Princess activity.  It is really simple and I recommend it for anyone with a toddler or preschooler in their home.  All you need is: one pipe cleaner a handful of Cheerios You are going to make a [...]

      Tragedy Of Trees (and Squirrels)
We’ve been planning to plant some trees in our front yard for several months now. One of the nice things about our street is the abundance of large trees. It is especially beautiful right now with the leaves turning color. While we were planning the addition of trees to our yard, we discovered that our neighbor across the street was planning the removal of his trees. Which is disappointing. I’m no arborist but his trees look healthy enough. They survived last Winter’s ice storm better than most. Besides they offer excellent shade for a south facing home and (most important to me) they are what we see when looking out our large living room window. I should also mention that several endangered squirrels live in these trees. I’m tempted to try to convince him not to cut down his trees, with appeals of money, photos of baby squirrels and scientific literature on the sun and the effects of it’s harmful rays. It’s funny, I’ve talked to him seve

SUN: Squirrels, fate and the end of the world
Even if you are the luckiest journalist in the world, you’ll never get to write a lede like this: If a scholar of Norse mythology had been in the stands of Yankee Stadium on Tuesday night, he or she probably would have advised Yankees fans to not make too much out of the 5-3 victory against [...]

Calling All Rogue Squirrels and Woodchucks....
And any other furry woodland creatures that can help me! This is the leak discussed in the previous post. The water leaks out the top of the box on the cold water line (blue). Instead of 'fixing' the problem, his idea was to fill the top with caulk and hope it went away. When that obviously didn't work I told him I was going to blog about it and that I was sure Rogue Squirrel and Woodchuck

      Cluster Support (No squirrels involved)
Today we took numerous great long plays off of the cluster support level around 13,402 on the Dow E-Mini YM contract. A cluster is just a level were multiple technicals are overlapping. They usually provide rock solid excellent support or resistance for high probability trades! Also, trading can make you hungry. So why not try out a tasty Caramello. Don’t share it, especially with dames named Megan.

Back to the drawing board, any ideas on resisting squirrels?
After it was becoming clear that our (four!) squirrels were eating the majority of the sunflower seed we were putting in our hopper feeder, we purchased an Opus Top Flight Fortress Bird Feeder. It holds five pounds of seeds and has a wire cage around the seed tube, allowing smaller birds to insert their heads, but blocking larger birds. Our woodpeckers have no difficulties feeding from it, which is good, and one persistent jay seems to have worked out how to get to the seed. The grackles have not bothered trying, so far as I have seen. But the squirrel, too, has figured it out. It hangs upside down from the top wire, inserts its little paw through the cage into the feeding tube and extracts a seed. He then munches it while hanging upside down and tries again. For the moment, we are thinking of rubbing Vaseline all over the pole to make it slippery. This is a young squirrel, and he seems to have a lot more trouble climbing the small pole than his mother did. Of course, that will

      Ahmadinejad and 14 arrested squirrels
:: PARANOIA is one of the characteristics that belong to a leader in a dictatorship. When Iranians arrest 14 squirrels for spying then you know what kind of state Iran is. - "In recent weeks, intelligence operatives have arrested 14 squirrels within Iran's borders," state-sponsored news agency IRNA reported. "The squirrels were carrying spy gear of foreign agencies, and were stopped before they could act, thanks to the alertness of our intelligence services." MORE. - The News in Swedish Ekorrar spionerar på Iran, SvD.REFLECTION Iran's missile power can strike 600 Israeli targets, Gulf nations reported Sunday. The report was issued shortly after the United States claimed that its troops in Iraq discovered 50 Iranian-made rocket launchers aimed at an American army base. Dangers squirrels "spyes" in Iran
Police in Iran country has captured 14 squirrels to spy his country. Local medias informed that the squirrels were found in the border supposedly equipped with concealment apparatuses. The report comes from the official Islamic Republican Agency of the News (Islamic Republic News Agency (IRNA) and confirmed by a high police position. The IRNA says that the squirrels were sent by foreign intelligence services - but they were captured by alert officials of police. If it is truth, this would not be the first time that the animals have been used to spy. During World War II, the doves were used to fly and to send messages in occupied France. I believe that this news would have to go in the Frikie zone, does not seem to you. Via The News Vault. (http://www.thenewsvault.com/cgi/news.pl?t=1078).

      Famous Squirrels
Rice has become a celebrity, there is no denying it (the first squirrel to visit all 50 states). Sometimes when I arrive at a new host they are more excited to meet Rice than they are me. And I’m cool with that, I completely understand that people would rather meet a fake plastic squirrel than another human being. If I had known Rice was going to become such a big hit across the country I would have planned to incorporate more. But once again, this is practice, the next trip will be bigger and better. Today, we must pay tribute to well known squirrels. Did you know that National Squirrel Appreciation Day is January 21st? For more fun squirrel knowledge visit Squirrels.org and the Wikipedia squirrel entry. Here is the famous water skiing squirrel: The recent Bud Light squirrel has become quite popular as well: Recently I saw the logo for the golf U.S. Open: Don't forget about the Bradford Fighting Squirrels: And of course there is Super Squirrel: Bob Ross used to fee

      When Squirrels Attack
Why do I always miss the good stuff? An aggressive squirrel attacked and injured three people in a German town before a 72-year-old pensioner dispatched the rampaging animal with his crutch. The squirrel first ran into a house in the southern town of Passau, leapt from behind on a 70-year-old woman, and sank its teeth into her hand, a local police spokesman said Thursday. With the squirrel still hanging from her hand, the woman ran onto the street in panic, where she managed to shake it off.The animal then entered a building site and jumped on a construction worker, injuring him on the hand and arm, before he managed to fight it off with a measuring pole."After that, the squirrel went into the 72-year-old man's garden and massively attacked him on the arms, hand and thigh," the spokesman said. "Then he killed it with his crutch."The spokesman said experts thought the attack may have been linked to the mating season or because the squirrel was ill. -- ReutersGet the &^%@ out of here..

Squirrels in SoCal, Michael Jackson in Tokyo
After years of complaints from the community, city officials in Santa Monica, Calif., are trying to stem the population of the city’s squirrels by injecting the pests with a birth-control drug. If the method works, they’re thinking of taking it up the road and shooting up Tom Cruise, also due to complaints from the community. You know who else was interested? Paris Hilton. Yeah, she thought it’d be convenient. I’m not sure she understood how it all worked though, she’s been seen hanging out in Palisades Park trying to seduce the squirrels. It’s the creepiest re-make of the “Pied Piper” ever. Now New York is trying to hire her to get rid of all the damned rats. They figure all it takes is one rat to go out with Paris, then he’ll slowly spread disease to all the other rats. They can carry the bubonic plague, but can they take on Paris? We’ll see. Michael Jackson made a public appearance in Tokyo this weekend for one of the firs
