Robotic squirrel used to study real-life squirrel behavior, steal nuts
Most of the squirrels on our college campus were massive, hyper-intelligent little beasts that were best dealt with by vigilant avoidance, but it looks like Hampshire College professor Sarah Partan is taking the opposite approach, using a robotic squirrel named “Rocky” to interact with the local rodents up close. Scaredy Squirrel at the Beach
Just in time for summer, author Melanie Watt brings us Scaredy Squirrel at the Beach. As we've come to expect, there is something new that Scaredy wants to try--namely enjoying the beach--but he's a bit scared. He wants to enjoy the sand and sun, but there are some things that he plans to avoid at all costs. In typical Scaredy fashion, something happens that "was not part of the plan," and we

Rocky the Robo-Squirrel Scares the Hell Out of Timid Woodland Creatures [Doppelgangers]
Why we care to know how squirrels communicate is anyone's guess, but it seems that this research is so important that a robot squirrel is being employed to live amongst the regular squirrel population. In fact, "Rocky" here (named after the cartoon character) is one of a growing legion of robo-creatures designed to study animals in their natural habitat. Rocky is controlled using a basic computer program and it comes equipped with tiny speakers that play back animal sounds so as not to arouse suspicion amongst the other squirrels. Apparently, tests over the last few years have proven successful in predicting squirrel behavior, but why they insist on doubling back over the highway into traffic is still a mystery. squirrel in the garden
There's been much talk of the urban grey squirrels seeing the rural red squirrels off in London and that its only the North of England, Scotland and the Isle of Wight that still have the red squirrels. I had an urban squirrel moment today when, like something from a movie, a helicopter was hovering around the back of the house. I managed to snap a quick picture, somewhat fuzzy, and then with the miracle of Aperture turned a blurred dot into a recognizable form, complete with the tail identification of G-NTWK. A quick google later and I could piece it together as a Aérospatiale AS 355F2 Ecureuil 2 Squirrel helicopter working for Network Rail and presumably looking for some track to inspect with the prominent camera. I suppose its a black and yellow squirrel.

      Philippine Squirrel?
Ethan attended a Curious George theme first birthday party this afternoon. The venue was at the children's playground of Manila Polo Club. Some kids were at the pools when we came. Ethan was mad because I intentionally did not bring swim suits for us since he still has coughs. The party place was decorated with inflatable animals, vines, and balloons. Ethan got the dinosaur inflatable.I was gazing at the Polo field ( trying to imagine myself astride a horse playing polo) when daughter # 4 shrieked. I just can't believe when daughter # 4 said that she saw a squirrel jumped from a tree. Her friend confirmed it.Squirrel? In the Philippines? Maybe what my daughter saw was a pigment of her imagination or is there really a Pinoy squirrel? Anyway, as always Ethan enjoyed the party.

      Stalking the Wild Indiana Squirrel
There isn't much to do in Richland, Indiana. There is a reproduction of Lincoln's childhood home where no one ever goes-- a failed attempt by the local Chamber of Commerce to promote tourism. There is a tavern situated in an old boxcar, and a restaurant housed in an imitation boxcar that serves a pretty good burger. I do not know where the Richlandian penchant for boxcars comes from, and neither did anyone I asked. My wife is from Richland, and she doesn't know. She thinks I'm an idiot for asking. She is probably right.Eight Thanksgivings ago, I dutifully took my wife and two kids, Samantha, 12, and Alex, 9, to Richland to spend the holiday. This is my latest miniature - a red squirrel in watercolour (actual size 1.75" x 2.25"). I have done this little fellow in coloured pencils earlier this year, but found him irresistible for a mini! He was a regular at a feeding station in the Highlands, so wasn't afraid of people even though he's wild. Squirrel Spirituality: Is That Me?
One of the blessings of mountain cabin life was all the "critters" I met. Each morning I would take my sack of peanuts and wait for them. They would come just so near, then they would stop to give me a chance to throw the peanuts to them!It was not an intimate relationship they were seeking: they wanted the peanuts! They would have been much happier if I had thrown the peanuts on the ground and then disappeared out of sight. They wanted my benefits without contending with me. Today I ask myself if I'm anything like those squirrels. Is it a relationship with You I seek, or would I be just as happy if You would throw some blessings my way and then get out of the way? My human nature is a clue: it wants the benefits without the accountability and responsibility required by relationships. Before regeneration, I was a "normal" human. Being spiritually dead, I didn't understand the selfishness of my heart; but I've traveled with You long enough, Lord, to see the need for self-examination.

Check these two out - they got the quickness, man! It’s like Jet Li if he was small, fuzzy and bushy tailed. And never actually hit anyone. The one on the left seems to have good ground skills, but he needs to work on his striking or at least his take downs if he’s going to get anywhere in the ring on the patio.

To Kill a Mocking Squirrel- OR- RIP Baby Pumpkwin
It truly is a Manic Monday today. I don't know if you saw my last Thursday Thirteen, but it's a slide show of my family at the pumpkin patch. In this post i mentioned that Emma became enamored with a "Baby Pumpkwin", and she carried it around, hugging and kissing the baby like a good little mommy. Even though she didn't want to leave her baby outside, she relented rather easily when I explained that pumpkins grew outside and it would be just fine.Wednesday night we left our gourd treasures on a bench in our small front doorstep area. We staggered the sizes and it looked simple but pretty. We had 2 large pumkins, 2 small ones- including Emma's Baby Pumpkwin, and 3 teeny ones. Now *sniff* in retrospect, I wish I had snapped a picture.Saturday morning I grabbed my cuppa joe and walked over to my office armoire, while looking out of the window... and what should I see? A little squirrel looking at me, with a teeny tiny "pumpkwin" grasped in his teeth. I ran out side before he could man

For most of y’all, these won’t make sense, but trust me, if you ever meet me down here, I’ll explain the list: 1) No matter what anyone calls that place in the union, it’ll never be Wack-a-Doos but always Locos. 2) To be in the Reflection Pond any day of the year other than Spirit Splash and not be caught and fined is a badge of honor. 3) They are not Nike and Hercules, they are AV and Phase II. 4) Whatever you do, do not feed the squirrels, they know where you live and will hunt you down and kill you, or at least steal all of your ramen and Easy Mac. And its with that 4th rule that I have to post my latest solution to making sure the little buggers don’t get all of my cheap starchy goodness of doom–this free 1.5oz sample package of Squirrel Away. Printer Squirrel 2.3 is an application that monitors print jobs being sent to printers, and sets charges. It is particularly useful in situations where charging for printing needs to occur instantaneously or where a number of individuals or groups are working together using the same equipment, but are financially unrelated and thus need to be charged accordingly.Printer Squirrel 2.3 records details such as the user who sent the job, job title, printing parameters and the number of pages printed for each print job, and then assigns a charge for the job. Users can be organised into functional groups and usage reports and charts can be produced for each group. Reports on printer usage can also be automatically emailed printed or saved to file.Printer Squirrel 2.3 now uses a Client/Server technology where logger clients collect print logs and send them across the network to a logging server. Finnish supermarket bann Squirrel
Health authorities in Finland have banned a squirrel from visiting a SIWA supermarket in the central Finnish city of Jyväskylä.The squirrel had previously been allowed in by the store's manager, Irene Lindroos, where it would enter daily via the open front door, and help itself to a Kinder Egg chocolate from the confectionary section. Once it had one, it would carry it back outside to eat it.The apearance of the squirrel regularly amused customers, often with the effect of causing them to purchase Kinder Eggs themselves. However, as of today, the squirrel has been barred from entering. "It's a decision of the health authorities. The door of the store has remained open all summer, but now it will be shut," said an employee of the supermarket. The squirrel had received widespread press attention earlier in the year. "I named it the Kinder-squirrel, after the treats. It always goes after them, other sweets do not seem to interest it as much," Irene Lindroos had said at the time. The swe

      Product review: Squirrel Logs
To appease our squirrels, we have a homemade squirrel feeder consisting of a board with two large screws in it. This is nailed to the tree where they nest. Ears of corn slide neatly onto the screw and it is fun to watch the squirrels hang out on the feeder, defend it from one another and occasionally take time to actually eat from it. The blue jays and red-bellied woodpeckers also love the corn. To save a little on corn, we decided to try out a Squirrel Log, which promised to be the equivalent of 12-24 ears of corn. They slid onto the screws in the feeder nicely. It took a few days for the squirrels to sample it, but they seem to like it just as well as the regular corn cobs. The blue jays haven’t touched it, but the red-bellied woodpecker still frequents the squirrel feeder. And our white-breasted nuthatch has returned! I haven’t seen it since Spring began and now it visits the squirrel feeder daily. The only difficulty we have had is that the squirrels tend to eat

Mad Squirrel Goes On Rampage Attacking People Before Killed By Grandpa's Cane
GERMANY - A mad squirrel went on a rampage and attacked and injured three people before a 72-year-old granny smacked it into submission with her cane. The squirrel first entered a home in Passau, a small town in southern Germany and jumped up on an unsuspecting 70-year-old woman and sank it's teeth into her hand, a local police spokesperson said. The terrorized elderly woman ran into the street with the squirrel still attached to her hand, a local police spokesman said Thursday. After that the squirrel apparently ran into a building site and attacked a construction worker who was bitten in the hand and arm. The worker managed to fight off the mad squirrel with a measuring pole. Police say the squirrel then entered "the 72-year-old man's garden and massively attacked him on the arms, hand and thigh," the spokesman said. "Then he killed it with his [cane]."Experts theorize the squirrel was ill (do you think?) or that his aggressive behavior was due to the mating season.

      Red Squirrel Painting in Pencil
The squirrel is finished, done in graphite and coloured pencils. I'm quite pleased with how it turned out, although I had to resist the urge at the end to add some extra whisps of hair on his tail with paint! Hopefully it looks sufficiently fluffy as is. Prints and cards will be available soon. The red squirrel is native to the UK, although it's survival is threatened by the more robust and adaptable greys which were introduced about a century or so ago. I don't think it is anything personal (its not as if they come to blows) but when the two share a habitat the grey usually takes over. Red squirrels are not always easy to see, but we were lucky to get the chance to watch this one for quite some time - it lives around the landmark adventure park in the highlands where they have a feeding station and consequently the squirrels are remarkably unbothered by fascinated humans with cameras!

      Twirl a Squirrel
Peoiple come up with some interesting ways of keeping the squirrels away from bird feeders. This invention turns one when the squirrel gets on the bird feeder and starts to twirl the whole thing. These bird feeders are going to turn into squirrel theme parks. Just watch, there will be lineups of squirrels waiting to ride the bird feeders. Squirrels are smart animals though, I am sure they will find some way of still getting the food out of the bird feeder without being tossed around.Tags: squirrel, funny, youtube, video, videorambler

I should be painting but I'm squirrel watching
A pair of cheeky squirrels have moved into the garden and are a delight to watch - I keep getting distracted by them! Our garden birds like the cheap scones you get in the economy range in Sainsburys - I can't remember how my husband discovered this but he now buys them regularly for them - then our cat decided she loved a bit as well and then second cat acquired the taste - now we have squirrels who like them - it's a good job they are cheap!I was watching this one eating and then he/she decided to get down to the ground down the 5ft 6in-ish pole to the bird table - he swung round so he was hanging by his back feet - hung there quite relaxed for a couple of minutes, meditating on whether he really wanted to get down, nose pointing down, just little back feet latched on supporting him - then suddenly had second thoughts and effortlessly swung up back onto the table and continued eating!
