      Sputnik: The Sci-Fab Board Game
We're still having fun rounding up our picks for this year's prettiest games, but we wanted to give you a snimpse of another one of our finds: the game Sputnik. For a sci-fi-themed tabletop game, it's rather stylistically cute.

Sputnik Mania is a semi documentary movie about the launch of Sputnik 50 years ago. The event almost triggered a nuclear World War III. Global catastrophe was averted, however, because of a private agreement between two ex-generals. Now, with the help of recently released documents from the former Soviet Union, the full story of [...]

E’ stati indetto anche un concorso: “Do you fancy building you own Sputnik? We’ve given you an idea how easy it could be, now the Magazine wants to hear from willing volunteers. We can even come and film you putting it together. We’ll also investigate how to get your Sputniks laun

On the 50th anniversary of Sputnik – a step backwards!
On October 4, 1957, the Soviet Union launched Sputnik and Science education changed in the United States. Money poured into schools to enhance the study of Science at every grade level. Materials for hands-on learning, textbooks, and lab equipment were all improved in order to promote a new generation of students who would flourish in every area of Science.Robert Yager in School Science and Mathematics wrote:Science and mathematics education have been linked to technological advances, the economy, and the well being of the United States citizenry since the Sputnik Shock of 1957. In the 20 years following the Soviet exploits in space, $2 billion were expended to advance K-12 science education in the US. It was a response designed to salve the nation’s wounded pride and the beginning of the dramatic infusion of funds and scientific talents to improve school science and mathematics.Science education has certainly improved and is probably the most consistent “hands-on” subject in our

Sputnik's legacy: Look back a half century later
This Op-Ed by Matthew Brzezinski in the Los Angeles Times, reprinted in C-J. (This first official picture of the Soviet satellite Sputnik I was issued in Moscow on Oct. 9, 1957.)Few Americans have heard of Sergei Pavlovich Korolev. But he is the reason that NASA was created and that we went to the moon. It is because of this anonymous Russian that we have federally backed college loans and National Football League games on DirecTV. The Chief Designer, as Korolev was mysteriously known because his true identity was a Soviet state secret, almost single-handedly started the space and missile races. Thanks largely to this bullheaded survivor of Stalin's gulag, a man who lost all his teeth and nearly his life in Siberian camps, the Republican Party lost the White House in 1960, and Lyndon B. Johnson secured a place on John F. Kennedy's ticket and ultimately became the 36th president. All this is just some of the fallout from Sputnik, the tiny Soviet satellite that Korolev and his team launc

I was a small child when the Russians launched Sputnik in 1957--still at the age when recess was the highlight of the school day for me and my friends. Current world events were rarely deemed worthy of our attention. In this case, though, we all knew something extraordinary had happened: there was something in the night sky that people--strange people in a faraway place--had put there. Of all thos

Sputnik anniversary, to unveil Clinton science agenda
Hillary Rodham Clinton used today’s the 50th anniversary of the Soviets launch of the Sputnik satellite to unveil a science agenda that would include a presidential executive order allowing “ethical stem cell research’’ and banning political appointees from altering the scientific conclusions in government publications.Clinton also called on a focus on alternative energy – “We can call it energy 2.0’’ – that would end the United State’s dependence on foreign oil.Clinton, who is seeking the Democratic nomination for president, pledged that if elected she would have a science advisor in the White House who will report directly to the president.Even before Clinton uttered a word of her speech, she came under attack from the Republican National Committee which pointed out she “is lecturing about math, even though she’s having trouble adding up the figures to pay for her own health care plan.’’Clinton did not put a dollar figure on her entire package, but she has

October 1957 - with the Sputnik the first artificial satellite into an earth orbit shot, possessed this nothing else as a robust radio station. “First! ”, the beep signaled to the Americans. As reaction on the Sputnik the USA altogether 25.4 billion a dollar expensive research program to adjust the "disgrace of the Sputnik" (John F. Sputnik Blazes Into Space.
Headline and Photo Widget from Hot Sexy Fashion Pictures by Widgetbox A 184 pound metallic beeping ball - an artificial moon - rocketed into space today October 4, 1957. This metallic ball, the Sputnik could be seen in the night sky, and marked mans ability to leave this blue little planet behind. Amateur radio operators throughout the world could listen to its beeping transmissions as it passed overhead. It sparked a renewed interest in science, and a race between Soviet Union and the United States to see who would be the first to land on the moon. A race that was won by the United States 12 years later. Can it be, that 50 years have passed already? Today we take television from around the world, satellite maps of the earth, weather satellite images from space for granted, yet it's only been a half-century since that first Sputnik echoed our arrival at the space frontier and the new age of the satellite. Although they are not Sputnik, we to have embarked on a new frontier. F

      Sputnik's 50th Anniversary
Sputnik 1 A technology invention the size of a basketball set off fierce competition between the United States and the U.S.S.R. 50 years ago this week, when Sputnik I launched and began the space race. The satellite weighed just under 185 pounds and orbited the Earth in 98 minutes, according to NASA, which came into existence because of Sputnik. The launch, on Oct. 4, 1957, marked the dawn of the Space Age. Five years earlier, the International Council of Scientific Unions declared July 1, 1957, through Dec. 31, 1958, the International Geophysical Year, which would coincide with the peak of the 11-year cycle of sunspot activity. The United States created a committee to plan satellite launches and research programs to study cosmic rays, gravity, solar activity, and other phenomenon during that "year." By 1954, the United States planned to launch satellites to map the Earth's services. The White House announced those plans in 1955. Then, the Soviets beat U.S. scientists and polic

¿Qué pasa con la faraónica fuente? / Premios Sputnik
