As I had mentioned earlier, I am a budding gardener. Apartment dwelling and the Northeast weather confined my exploration to indoors only.

Apple: “Thanks, but no.”
Adobe: “Please?”
Apple: “No.”
Adobe: “Pleeeeease?”
Apple: “N-O. No.”

Talking about bean sprouts, that was my first shock in New Zealand. A massive one.
During my first day of arrival in the garden city of NZ almost 2 years ago, our residential assistance brought us to Countdown (a hypermarket nearby) to get some commodities. Back then, I stayed in Ilam Village, one of the university's hall of residence. You can imagine the everything-is-so-darn-expensive
Edible seeds are packed with nutrients and when sprouted..it is even more..I would say it is the most nutritious food. They are known to grow even after you refrigerate them thereby increasing their nutrient content as well...these grown at home will probably be the freshest food that is laid on your table. All that they need is some space, air, light and water. These are my home-sprouted mung bea
"We don't need a melting pot in this country, folks. We need a salad bowl. In a salad bowl, you put in the different things. This is my sprouter. I purchased it for 19 dollars on Amazon. I had no idea at the time, how addicting this nice little appliance was going to be for me. Otherwise, I would have purchased 2 or 3 of them. This handy little gadget grows me three different types of sprouts, fresh

In our home the three kids have been raised with the 'three bite rule' so they've had Brussels Sprouts before... many times. But I accept that they don't care for them (yet, LOL) and I always make sure that when they are served I include or two other vegetable choices. My husband has hated them all his life and although I don't make him follow the 'three bite rule' (hee hee) he does typically tr

Tonight's post has been 3 months in the making. Palm Trees are the beginning cause to my gardening addiction. To keep from getting things to confusing I am going to do a few posts in a row to show the progress of my different palms. This first post is going to show the growth of the entire seedling rack that my friend J Lead-Lo and I built for the seedling pots I purchased. The first picture are some of the palm seeds I started on 1/10, then we have the collars and pots the day they came in the mail 1/20, next is 2/13, the night we finished the seedling stand. Now the first Phoenix canariensis , Canary Island Date Palm ,or for typing purposes CIDP , seedlings move in on 2/14. Now for the sad part of the project. Cuttin' and pastin' all the pictures into the proper folders I lost the 2/20
Its been a slow process adding vegetables into my diet. I have always been a fan of the old standbys: lettuce, carrots, cucumber, corn, peas, broccoli, cauliflower. But not so much with onions, peppers, and the likes. So this time around on weight watchers I am doing my hardest to add in [...]
I’d felt a bit dejected over the fact that none of my little greenhouses had shown signs of life. So, today I decided to move them to a more exposed area with more sunlight. As I was doing this I noticed green. I thought, “Could it be?”. Sure enough one little flat of all the [...]
I’ll readily admit that I’m a skin care snob. It’s not the label - what I buy is generally not expensive. It’s the ingredients that count. I won’t put strange chemicals, colours and noxious fragrances on me or my children. I’ll use straight up organic grapeseed oil before I’ll put most [...]

Last night when I was putting the bamboo palm seeds in the seed room. I started to check some of the other container to see if anything has happened yet. In the Licuala ramsayi I found 7 sprouts. New Mushroom Men trailer sproutsFiled under: Video Mushroom Men, if you'll excuse the terrible pun, is beginning to grow on us. We're ready for another platformer after, you know, and Red Fly's plant-based romp looks like it could keep us occupied. There's a quaint, almost eerie vibe to the game, with a Fifties B-movie tone to most of what it does.In the trailer above -- the first we've seen of the game in some time -- we get a look at some combat (against common garden beasties, such as ants and rabbits), as well as our fungal hero flexing his magical "spore-based powers."Permalink | Email this | Linking Blogs | Comments Ads by Google Link - Comments - Chris Greenhough - Fri, 07 Mar 2008 19:15:00 GMT - Feed (8 subs) gamecock
Today in a tray that I had dropped 50 Veitchia merrillii , Christmas Palm seeds in back in the middle of Dec. 07 I found 49 sprouted and broke the suface of the dirt. I spent about an hour trying to replant these in new pots. 25 made it into the seedling stand, and the other 24 were split up in between some 1 gallons an I planted some 3 and 4 bangers. Some how a Canary Island Date Palm seed made it in the tray, it also sprouted and actually had its 1st strap leaf on its way. Just a little added bonus.Come Watch my Plants Grow
Note: French version is on La cuisine de BabethImportant: don't forget to check: Help beat sarcomaGirls from the 7th muffins day contest challenged me. I had to come up with savory muffins, cute and eatable (as I must add).I wanted to come up with muffins fully loaded with seasonal ingredients.I saw some interesting videos (mostly on the Today Show) and read recipes (see Heidi's one) about brussels sprouts. Well you may have the same unappealing souvenir of them, yep you had the same boiled ones at your school cafeteria, yeurkkk! Really not tasty. But in all those recipes I saw and read, brussels sprouts were not boiled just stirred, and that looked yummy and vibrant green not mashed and dark green like school cafeteria's ones.I wanted to try ,so as soon as brussels sprouts arrived on my f
I am getting close to the halfway point of NaBloPoMo, and so far I’ve only had one day when I really, really didn’t want to write and had to force myself. On the plus side, I’ve plumbed my depths for ideas about food from cookbook selection to memories; on the negative side I have written some lower quality entries than I would in an ordinary month.
I have designated Tuesdays, during this marathon of blogging, as Random Dinner Snapshot days. Today’s dinner was from my brand new BonAppetit Cookbook which I won in a raffle. I made Chicken Paprikas, buttered noodles with poppy seeds, and Roasted brussel sprouts and cauliflower with orange.
The paprikas is a dish with which I am well familiar, having come from a long line of Hungarian cooks. Although the recipe notes (and it is true that) the traditional recipe calls for sour cream and bacon fat, the dish has always been sour cream -free in my family, most likely because the Hungarians of my ancestry were Jewish
I was at the post office mailing my packages last week, and saw somebody else with a package load as big of mine. I couldn't help but hearing the post office lady to ask the lady with the packages "do you sell online" and the lady answering "yes, I sell baby clothing and toys". I couldn't help myself but interrupt and let them know I had been listening their conversation (well, it was impossible not to in a small post office, right next to me!). "So do I - I sell children's clothing online too" I said, and there was an instant connection. It was just unbelievable to even think that there would be two ladies in our small town owning their children's online stores - and I had never heard of her. We exchanged phone numbers and hopefully we can get together some time soon and do the "business talk" about the baby stores, let the girls play together and have an afternoon at the park. She seemed so nice, and I was so excited to meet her. Check out her store, Little Sprouts - they carry a
You will not turn up your nose to Brussels sprouts after making this side dish. My father loved Brussels sprouts. My mother boiled them until they were soft and served them covered in butter. The house reeked of Brussels sprouts. This is also the cooking technique used by most cafeterias and restaurants. Although I love [...]
Soya Bean Sprouts are different from Mung Bean Sprouts. The former has a big bean head whilst the latter is smallish, which is understandable because soya beans are much bigger in size compared to mung beans. In the market, mung bean sprouts (most of the time just simply called bean sprouts) are easily available but not soya bean sprouts. You will also realise that mung bean sprouts have yellow coloured head (bean) after the removal of the dark green coloured skin covering the bean. As for the soya bean sprouts, you can see them above.
Cooking time wise, soya bean sprouts take a longer time to cook due to the bigger sized bean head. In terms of taste and texture, I think soya bean sprouts are slightly heavier in taste (sweeter) and no doubt, crunchier. When you are chewing on mung bean sprouts, you practically can only feel the texture of the body rather than the bean. I think soya bean sprouts are also more nutritious as what soya beans are famed for. If you can get your hands on t
Pea Sprouts are also called Pea Shoots by others. The Chinese call it 豆苗. I remembered the very first time I cooked this, I thought it was more than enough for two but when it was cooked, it was barely enough for one. It shrunk to half! You shouldn't take more than 10 minutes to cook this dish. So it's good for those who always (say they) can't find time to cook.Ingredients:500g Pea Sprouts4 clove Garlic, sliced or minced1 tablespoon Water1 tablespoon Oil1/2 teaspoon Light Soy Saucea pinch of SaltHow to do it:Heat wok with oil.Add in the garlic and stir fry till frangant.Add in your pea sprouts and stir fry quickly to let them 'shrink' evenly.Add in 1/2 to 1 tablespoon water your pea sprout is too dry.Add in light soy sauce and a pinch of salt to taste.Stir well, dish and serve.☆ Click HERE for printer-friendly version of an original recipe. http://feeds.feedburner.com/wokkingmum
I am lying on the couch typing on an old laptop connected by Lynx to my other computers because I think I am too tired to sit up right. It’s very hot on my lap though and I’m always hot…and tired. Excessive bleeding, joint and abdominal pain, frequent shortness of breath, elevated blood pressure and pulse, trouble sleeping, frequent bowel spasms and activity and nausea at any time for no apparent reason are no fun either. I could put up with all this but the 3 nearly fatal choking incidences this week due to my triple sized thyroid has convinced me that it has too be shrunk before I die stupidly before my time. I now see the wisdom of the damned radioactive iodine. The freaking PTU does little for my symptoms and nothing toward shrinking. It’s that or surgery. Surgery is too d
Do you remember that first-grade experiment you undertook at school? Every child had a piece of cotton wool that had been moistened from the tap, placed on a butcher's styrophoam meat tray and then covered with tiny seeds. The window sills would be cluttered for the next week or two as we watched our tiny seeds finally sprout.
Well, if your memory serves you well you shouldn't have any further problems in growing your own alfalfa sprouts.
Backyardnature.net breaks the process down into five easy steps and shows how you can grow your own alfalfa at home. And, if you're looking for seeds they even have a link to purchase from their site.
I have a confession to make.I love brussels sprouts.Really.I love them roasted, fried, sauteed. I am the only one in the house that will even eat them. Well, not really. My husband will eat them if I make them. But he doesn't like them. My favorite way to prepare them are to saute them in garlic butter.Simple and easy. Tonight I actually got two of the three to eat them.I shredded them and added crumbled turkey bacon. And miraculously the three year old and the 16 month old gobbled them up.The 9 year old wouldn't fall for it.Maybe next time.Garlic Sauteed Brussels Sprouts2 cups Brussels sprouts1 1/2 tablespoons butter1 1/2 tablespoons olive oil3 cloves garlic, smashedsalt and pepper Melt butter and olive oil in a medium skillet (over medium-high heat) until butter is foamy.Reduce heat to medium, add smashed garlic and cook until lightly browned.Remove garlic and discard.Add sprouts , cover, and cook, stirring occasionally on medium-low heat 10-15 minutes or until tender when pierced with a
Cleaning out the cupboards the other day, I ran across an unopened bag of boring American brown lentils that I’d bought before I discovered the luxury of Du Puy and Beluga lentils. They must have been sitting in my cupboard collecting dust for about 8 months, buried behind cans of diced tomatoes and half-empty bags of rice. They don’t stand a chance at getting used in a lentil soup or salad anytime soon, not as long as there are half-empty bags of Du Puys and Belugas sitting next to them.
I remembered Madhur Jaffrey having a few recipes involving lentil sprouts in her wonderful World Vegetarian cookbook, so I googled lentil sprouts and found that all that is involved in sprouting them is a bowl, some water, and a few days patience. Without checking the yield of a given quantity of dry beans, I dumped the entire one pound bag into a large bowl, covered it with water to rinse, drained, and then covered with water to soak for 12 hours. When I came back to drain them, oh goodne
