At last, Home Front has found a more pleasant way to tell a foreclosure story. When Golden 1 Credit Union recently foreclosed on a 1-acre property near Rio Linda, it didn't just put it back on the market at a big loss. California's biggest credit union instead gave the parcel to Habitat for Humanity. Habitat plans to build four houses on the property. On Saturday a sad outcome will start to turn i
Thanksgiving dinner was good, if I do say so myself. The highlight was stuffing that was so supremely delicious that Mr. Annie told me that if I ever made it another way, he would divorce me. An odd endorsement, but a resounding one nonetheless. The company was good, the mood relaxed, and the cleaning up [...]

Todays post is going to be on sprouting Delonix regia, Royal Poinciana seeds. I have a few varieties of seeds. Most come in a pods that are quite large. When I was a kid we used them for swords. I will start with the largest pod first. This came from a light orange/red flower poinsettia tree, the next is a medium size pod which came from a blood red color flower poinsetia, and the final is a smal
I was never a salad person. The buffet table laid down with tons of salads never did attract me. I could probably pick at them, but never indulge myself over a bowl. At Pizza Hut, you will never catch me wandering towards the salad bar. 'Gosh you land in a pizza joint to lavish on pizzas right, so why bother on salads' was always my thought. If I wanted to eat salad, I might as well have stayed ba
From San Francisco Chronicle(08-01) 04:00 PDT Beijing -- It rises next to the Stalinist stolidity of the Great Hall of the People like a huge, glass egg. Subversive in form, French architect Paul Andreu's audacious creation, which opened last winter, is utterly traditional in function: It is China's new National Center for Performing Arts.Visitors enter the building by going down an escalator, pas
Her are a few progression pictures of my first Coconut Palm seedling. The first is from back in Jan when I collected a few coconuts from the beach. The next picture was taken on May 28, and the third picture was taken on July 24. Also over the weekend I was pulling weeds over by 20 coconuts that I have managed to collect now and found my second sprout. This is the last picture. It looks like it h

Here is a not so great pic of when I first transplanted them...weakly looking, aren't they? But why the name Falstaff?

Veitchia merrillii ' Aurea Variegata ', Adonidia merrillii , Variegated Christmas Palm , Variegated Manila Palm are the names I have heard this palm called. I collected the red fruits from a tree back in Dec 07. In previous posts I have talked about these sprouts. I had around 70 cleaned seeds that I threw in an extra recycle bin that I had. Well, over the weekend I went to clean out the community bin and found this rare beauty. As of now this little sprout is showing great signs of variegation. Both sides of the first leaf have a yellow/white veins running through them. I have asked a few questions like will this seedling keep the variegation and the responses have been good. So hopefully I have sprouted my very first rare palm tree! Here are a few pictures from the recycle bin before th

CHICAGO (Reuters) - Most people know eating broccoli is good for you but it also can help skin cells fend off damage from harmful ultraviolet radiation, U.S. researchers said on Monday. The extract, derived from newly sprouted broccoli seeds, reduced skin redness and damage by more than one third compared with untreated skin, they said. The extract already has been shown to help skin cells fight UV damage in mice. "This is a first demonstration that a human tissue can be protected directly against a known human carcinogen," said Dr. Paul Talalay of Johns Hopkins University, whose study appears in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences. "This is not a sunscreen," Talalay said in a telephone interview. Instead, the extract helped fortify skin cells to fight the effects of UV radiation. Unlike sunscreens, which provide a physical barrier against UV rays by absorbing, blocking or scattering the light, the extract helped boost the production of protective enzymes that defend ag
