Reuters - Sprint Nextel Corp and Clearwire Corp are near announcing a $12 billion joint venture with major cable operators to offer services based on WiMax, an emerging technology that could make wireless Internet ubiquitous, people close to the talks said on Tuesday.

AP - Sprint Nextel Corp. is close to finalizing a deal to get financing for its new wireless broadband network from a group that includes Comcast Corp. and Google Inc., according to a person close to the talks.

Last Friday a federal appeals court ordered Sprint Nextel Corp to meet a June 26 deadline to vacate airwaves it uses that are close to public safety agency networks.  If Sprint doesn’t comply, it will be costly and disruptive to its wireless service. Sprint may be a good deal because of the weak dollar against the euro. Sprint’s 2007 losses were 30 billion dollars in exceptional costs relating to its acquisition of Nextel. As a result, Sprint suspended indefinitely dividend payments the end of February. 

Deutsche Telekom AG is weighing a bid to acquire Sprint Nextel Corp. that could catapult the German telecommunications giant's wireless arm, T-Mobile USA, to the No. 1 position in the U.S., according to people familiar with the matter. Deutsche Telekom's deliberations are at a preliminary stage and management may very well turn away, these people cautioned. Sprint is discontinuing its Sprint Voice Command on July 1, 2008. Sprint has apologized to customers per the following: "We apologize for any inconvenience this may cause. Besides automatically removing the monthly Voice Command fee from your bill, we'll help you prepare for the change with these steps:Download your Voice Command address book. Download and print your address book soon. You won't be able to access it after July 1, 2008. Also, tell others on your account about the change so they can download and save their address book. 

Sprint's Pivot is dead. After investing $100 million in the venture, Comcast, Cox Communications and Time Warner Cable are quietly pulling the plug on the joint cell-phone venture with Sprint Nextel Corp.The three U.S. largest cable Comcast Corp said they have stopped marketing the Pivot service and plan in the coming weeks to give their Pivot customers the option to switch to Sprint's traditional  mobile phone plans.

A little over a week ago I signed my wife and I up each for the Sprint SERO cell phone plan. We were already on Verizon Wireless. So why switch? First let me explain our Verizon experience:We had been looking into upgrading our phones since they were over two years old and we were due a credit for a new phone as part of Verizon's plan.
