Political activists naturally balcanize and the growing green movement is no exception. Serial corporate office invaders London Rising Tide (LRT) today occupied the CarbonNeutral Company which, among other things, provides offsets to its clients. LRT believes that offsets are damaging because they are a moral hazard (encouraging people to continue their indulgent behaviour), the schemes are corrupt and because projects are often poorly designed and cause more harm than good. The activist group is certainly not alone in this opinion. Offsets have recently come under another round of criticism from more mainstream quarters, including the New York Times and the RSPB. It does seem that they have a point. Offsetting reduces environmentalism to another item on the shopping list.
