From the beginning, man has been preoccupied with the question of divinity-who is responsible for us being here and how do we relate to the Creator. All primitive peoples have developed some kind of world-view which they expressed through myths, legend or stories. All life was viewed as dependent on a force which transcended the [...]
One of my favorites quotes goes something like this: “When science gets to the top of the mountain, it will find that religion is already there.” I prefer to think of it as, when science and religion get to the top of the mountain, they will both find Spiriritualy is already there.
But any way you [...]
"Many of us have a fantasy perception of spirituality rather than a real awareness of it. Sometimes this happens because a person wants to escape from the demands of the worldly life, or they may be totally unsatisfied with the life that they have. There are many reasons for our misunderstanding spirituality. Nevertheless the search for true spirituality is hidden within everyone.... When you are
After a successful first season of events, London’s newest spirituality centre – Breathing Space@St Luke’s church, West Holloway – now has a second season of events in full swing.
Visitors from across London – and further afield – have already enjoyed events such as dancing the Aramaic Lord’s Prayer, drawing-as-meditation, and Soul Space contemplative services.

A few years ago, when I was still in college, Brett took a Minority Cultures and Relations class with the same influential (and controversial) professor I had for Social Psychology. As with most of his classes, topics outside the realm of Minority Cultures and Relations came up in the course of the session. One day, he was discussing the different movements that empires go through in the course of
I have just finished reading a fascinating essay about Post-Atheist Spirituality which Phil Johnson flicked my way. There is something for everyone here:
Eastern Orthodoxy - How apophatic theology primes atheism Atheism - Its unconscious religious impulsesNeo-Paganism - Why the author thinks its a dead endAngelism - As the religiosity of post-modernity
So, have we stirred enough pots yet?
Earlier today I had the good fortune of tuning in to one of my favorite evangelist ministers, Joyce Myer. Her messages really touch my heart because they are so down to earth. I find I get spiritually fed in a...
Paul Harrison wraps up his four-part series by explaining the complementary relationship between Pantheism and modern science. One of the strongest attractions of Pantheism for me is that it seems perfectly attuned for our times. We are living in world where scripture-driven fundamentalists from the three Western monotheisms are threatening international security and peace. A world where human ne
Simple Spirituality: Learning to See God in a Broken Worldby Christopher HeuertzWhat is this book that ended up on my desk? It is certainly not academic theology, not the kind of book that I normally read. It seems in a way part memoir, though from someone too young to write a memoir, part theological reflection, though simple in its aims, and part guide, though not from someone who has arrived.

This essay was written by my (sixteen year old) daughter for an Aboriginal studies University class she took with Professor Georges Sioui, a very unique and knowledgeable First Nations teacher and a dignified and compassionate man. The directions in which he took the class (mixing spirituality and history) meshed beautifully with independent readings on Islamic [...]
Two questions I received on corporeality’s relationship to spirituality:
Question: You’ve said that if people don’t study Kabbalah, it will lead to material consequences such as murder, destruction, and corporeal suffering, and that by studying Kabbalah, we can prevent the suffering. You have also said that the spiritual and the corporeal aren’t connected. How do you explain this contradi
Ask just about anyone what spirituality means and you are likely to get lots of different answers. Just yesterday my good friend Roger asked me what spirituality means to me and how it has evolved for me over the years....

Father Bernard Sander, lauded as a visionary and a mentor, was reaching out to Catholic families and youths as early as the 1940s. By the 1980s, he had helped establish a summer spirituality conference for families. Three years ago, he was the guide of a group that founded a Catholic youth center in
This is not a strange childhood dream; it's the Greenwich Village studio space that belongs to the designer Donna Karan and is bustling with a New York-LA nexus of fashion and fame. Karan, Moore and her actor husband, Ashton Kutcher, are present for this high-powered fundraiser. Madonna is a co-chair. They are all friends, tied together originally by the red string of Kabbalah, the controver
Is spirituality a uniquely human attribute and experience? Do intelligent non-human beings exist and, if so, do such beings have religious beliefs or even souls?
At least one major world religion has indicated that its answer to such questions may well be no, yes, and yes, in that order. In a recent interview with Italian newspaper L’Osservatore Romano, the Vatican’s chief astronomer, the Rev
These things can always be looked at several different ways. After listening to WNYC’s RadioLab on “Where Am I?”, I was very uncertain about the brain’s role in religion and spirituality, and how we might create the “proof” for these beliefs. When the brain loses track of the body, experiences similar to “near-death experiences” occur. Perhaps these situations are merely a react
Indians from the ancient times have regarded the sadhus and swamis as next to god and worshipped them. But, these days, various shameful acts committed by these so-called swamis certainly put a question mark on the authenticity of such persons.
FOR THE past one week, the people of Kerala have been treated to the juicy bits of two swamis’ profligacy and escapades. Every vernacular and English
21 May 2008 Kit Fordham’s new exhibition of black-and-white photographs of Orthodox life and worship in the Balkans and Russia casts a fresh eye on an ancient subject, writes Marcus Tanner.

Over the next couple days, I'll be reading Christopher Heuertz's first book, Simple Spirituality : Learning to See God in a Broken World, available in July. Chris is the International Executive Director of Word Made Flesh, an organization that exists to serve Jesus among the poorest of the world's poor; I met him in the fall while he was on a learning sabbatical at Duke. I'll post a review when
Last night’s community group discussion revolved around two related issues - truth and spirituality. We first viewed this video regarding Oprah Winfrey’s web seminar class (what some have called a “church”). Our discussion led us to understand that among the many flaws of Eckhart Tolle (Oprah’s guest and teacher of the seminar) and Oprah were the foundational issues of truth and spirit

Sister Ruth Ann Myers, OSF, reflects on the topic of spirituality from her broad background in theology, psychology and spiritual direction.
What is happening in the 21st Century Spirituality? Significant, perhaps, is the enormous interest in spirituality that is emerging today. Some writers are calling it “The Spiritual Revolution”. New, too, is that the interest is coming from a broad spectrum
Medicine shrinks from caring for the spiritual needs of dying patients, even though spirituality is what most people yearn for most at the end of life, Franciscan Brother Daniel Sulmasy, a physician and philosopher, told an audience at the University of San Francisco April 28.
Doctors tend to ignore spiritual care or back away from it out of fear of inadequacy or invading patients' privacy,
Spirituality contributes significantly to a child’s overall happiness—even more so than for adults, according to a new study from the University of British Columbia.

One of the things that confirmed my former distrust of religion took place when I was in the second grade. My best friend was a little girl who lived near me. She and her parents were very Christian, and my parents were very not. I didn't ask my friend about what she believed, but I knew that I, and my family, did not hold the same beliefs. My friend decided one day that she couldn't reconcile
Yoga has many beneficial effects if you practice it on a regular basis; it is known to help if major illnesses as well as being undertaken by those who just want to get fitter and healthier. Those who practice yoga on a more serious level think of it as a totally
When Tibetan Buddhism is celebrated today as the peaceful and calming practice of meditation, people overlook the reality of a brutal religion with bizarre traditions that has used meditation as a tyrannizing tool to quash the power of feelings and free, critical thinking. Not only one hell as in Christianity, but sixteen hells doom the believer in Tibetan Buddhism with terrifying horror
John Ruskin said: "Education does not mean just teaching people what they do not know, it also means teaching people to behave as they do not behave."
Today, more than 150 years later, Mr. Ruskin's words still ring true, as it is no longer enough to just have a high IQ. In fact, new research at Harvard University reveals that 90 percent to 95 percent of success now depends upon Emotional
When explaining stress management to an audience, a lecturer raised a glass of water and asked, “how heavy is this glass of water?” The answers called out ranged from 20 grams to 500 grams. The lecturer replied, “The absolute weight doesn’t matter. It depends on how long you try to hold it! If I hold it for a minute, that’s not a problem. If I hold it for an hour, I’ll have an ache in my right
My kids are sand dwellers. Some days they closely resemble sand-dwelling, desert lizards because of the absurd length of time they spend in our turtle-shaped sandbox in the backyard. Trying to brush off and discard every grain of sand on their bodies prior to coming indoors is an unfeasible task to say the least. Usually they end up napping in a bed full of tiny grains of sand undetectable to the naked eye, but easily recognizable by the ear, for the grinding sound of what becomes human sandpaper pressing against their mattress with every rise and fall of their chest indicates the presence of the grainy culprits. Tasha and I periodically shake their mattresses free of the chafing-causing little devils only to free them into the depths of the murky bowels of their bedroom carpet—a hav

Of all my latest obsessions, this is one of the top three. Having finally gotten around to keeping a journal, as of July of last year, I'm coming to terms with a lot of things about myself and my mania to create. I also see now how that can be a sort of spiritual experience, a soul-purging kind of cleansing that leads to an number of epiphanies. At UUC services yesterday creativity was the topic.
Feeling a mental affirmation that everything would be okay. Quietness. And, taking the stance that God is my life.
Achieving anything is not just hard work. Maybe there is something you need to change in between your ears...
As a person with two dogs to walk and a lawn to mow from time to time, I do not have great insights about spirituality or science. But that is not to say that these concepts do not intrigue me. We are enjoined by the human condition, not to mention the condition of our planet, to not walk around with a benighted mind, as it so easily might be by either ideology, religion or some fantasy construct

Recent events in Tibet and the ethnic Tibetan parts of Western China this past couple of weeks have lead to much press about the China-Dalai Lama conflict and the apparent struggle for control of the region. It’s a complicated issue, fraught with deceit, mystique, sadness and an apparent inability to see towards a solution. Perhaps, however, when a solution is already to hand, it is no longer
This year marks the 50th anniversary of the opening of Covington's Garden of Hope. Less than 10 minutes from downtown Cincinnati, it's an outdoor sanctuary featuring a replica of the tomb of Jesus in Jerusalem, which is believed to be Christ's burial chamber. It's a great place to visit for a sense of peace and spirituality, regardless of one's beliefs; a non-denominational, memorial park where
Today there is a powerful spirituality movement. When I say spirituality I am not speaking of religion; I am speaking of something different--a connection with the Divine. This connection is what many mystics call "union with God." Sometimes this happens through a religious path, but not often. When it does the person who achieves divine union usually finds herself on the outside looking in.One

Do you see a conflict between science and spirituality?" my friend asked.
The question points to our tendency to believe that we can, in a scientific sense, be neutral, impartial observers; that life consists of opposites rather than inclusive, complementary values. That the workings of the universe can be broken down into neat, efficient units and understood in exact terms.
Yet, historically,
The Pew Forum on Religion and Public Life released an interesting report on the American religious landscape. The blogosphere was immediately filled with responses. Ivan himself almost posted on the subject post haste, but either apathy or reluctance got the best of him.The results of the report are far from surprising: A dilluted, confused, spiritual amalgum hosted by a confused and fickle populous. Here are a few highlights:• Roughly 44 percent of American adults have either switched religious affiliation, moved from being unaffiliated with any religion to being affiliated with a particular faith, or dropped any connection to a specific religious tradition altogether. • The number of adults who said they are not affiliated with any particular faith today (16.1 percent) is more than d
To my family and I, spirituality in managing your eczema is very critical. You shall never underestimate the power of faith. Spirituality does help us to get through the rough times - put things in perspective. And, the more you put your hands off you and your eczema (literally and figuratively) and devote to your Higher Being, you will see INSTANT relieve.I am a Christian - I am devoted to the Almighty God, Jesus Christ. Although I seek what a man could think of the best solutions for my family conditions - mainstream medication and herbal treatment of eczema - JC offers my family and I the BEST solution - release your hands from the wheel of your life, and He will take control to do what's best for us. That's how faith works, and that's how you break the eczema breakout cycle. No matte
The idea of enlightenment is as old as mankind’s search for a greater truth behind life. Although the term enlightenment originated in ancient eastern religions, it has almost taken on a life of it’s own in modern spirituality. You may ask yourself ‘what is enlightenment?’ and like most before you, your answer will fall well short of fully encapsulating the totality of it’s meaning. I don’t
One of my clients, who has only believed in the physical level of experience, is currently finding that this is limiting him in his personal growth. Many people want spiritual life to be very easy. They want to be with a guru for few years and then start their own dabba of spiritual life. I know a person who grows long hair, walk with out slippers, wear khaddi clothes, will drink milk and think he is spiritual. There is nothing wrong in doing it. But in the office he is like a politician who screw’s up people’s life. The moment his work is

Defining what is true to you is not a finite spiritual axiom. Your spiritual growth allows you to change what is true to you as you experience different perspectives about life. The spirituality information that you believe as true one day can change the next day because of your experience. Your truths can only come from your experience. All too often we discount the truth of our experience and
Often discussed in the context of religion, the subject of children's spirituality is nevertheless a separate, and arguably more general, topic. In fact, according to experts, children's spirituality not only transcends the idea of particular religious denomination or tradition, but also goes beyond religion itself, as is evidenced by the spiritual concerns of children, and people in general, who
What we eventually experience as dis-ease and later as illness actually begins in the "spiritual dominion" and becomes a by-product or mirror of our relationship with our soul, our mind, body, and emotions. The body is merely a reflecting mirror of any dis-ease or illness that starts as a spiritual deficiency and later impacts the mind, body, and emotions. To reach the root causes of any

After years of serving in the church, years of being transformed by Christ and His word living in us…rill or rille: (noun) 1. a small stream 2. a small channel (as one formed by soil erosion) …a small channel carved out by the living water of Jesus Christ - designed to flow out into the world that is unreachable to the church - as in the “organized religious instituition” sense of the word. When we moved to La Crosse 10 years ago we began a jour
This dame sure knows the way to be under the lime light! Just a few days back she had created news attending Baba Ramdev’s yoga camp. Now this busty babe is in the news again, this time for being cast as a friend of none other that Jesus Christ. Well if you’ve been paying attention at all to my ramblings you know that I have not really found religion in my addiction recovery. I have however grown a greater sense of spirituality in my addiction recovery.

The questions raised in the comments of my last post are worth another post. I have used the word deconstruction. What is that? You could look it up in the dictionary or read books about it (which I recommend). I will give you my understanding. In a simple sentence, deconstruction is the task of exposing the subjectivity of narratives previously considered objective. Deconstruction demonstrates that what has been presented as absolute truth is a human construct. An example in politics was the movement from the Divine Right of Kings toward democracy. This is beautifully illustrated in Monty Python's In Search of the Holy Grail. Check out this scene. My favorite line is from the snarky peasant to King Arthur: "You cannot claim absolute power because some watery tart throws a sword at you!"In literature, particularly sacred literature, deconstruction shows how the narratives reveal the author's subjectivity, context, and prejudices. Think of the critiques of the Qu
One of the blessings of mountain cabin life was all the "critters" I met. Each morning I would take my sack of peanuts and wait for them. They would come just so near, then they would stop to give me a chance to throw the peanuts to them!It was not an intimate relationship they were seeking: they wanted the peanuts! They would have been much happier if I had thrown the peanuts on the ground and then disappeared out of sight. They wanted my benefits without contending with me. Today I ask myself if I'm anything like those squirrels. Is it a relationship with You I seek, or would I be just as happy if You would throw some blessings my way and then get out of the way? My human nature is a clue: it wants the benefits without the accountability and responsibility required by relationships. Before regeneration, I was a "normal" human. Being spiritually dead, I didn't understand the selfishness of my heart; but I've traveled with You long enough, Lord, to see the need for self-examination.
She knows my voices: happy voice, playful voice, sympathetic voice, stern voice, and most of all, "bad girl" voice. She reacts to each voice with totally different bodily movements. I have to force myself not to laugh when she's doing her slow, methodical, passive-aggressive walk from the yard to the steps. She even knows my grunts! And I know all of her different sounds. We're companions, sometimes adversaries, but mostly, we're together. She has so many kinds of barks, and I am the only one who knows the difference between them. She's a quirky girl, that's for sure! Because she was trained several years ago to go outside after eating, she barks after eating only one or two Kibble Bits. It's her "habit bark". When she really has to pottie, her bark is relentless as she runs through the house, back and forth like a crazy dog.She has a growl that says, "Time to play with me and I'm ready to play!" She also has a growl that says, "I'm not feeling well, so keep your distance." And

Since 1981 I have been on a mission to eat in every great restaurant the world over. Living in San Francisco, and traveling, has given me every opportunity to hit many 5 Star establishments. The list includes: Charlie Trotter, Aqua (SF), Masa’s (SF), Martini House (Napa), Gary Danko (SF), Jardiniere, Postrio, Boulevard, Slanted Door, Stars (back in the day), Tra Vigne (Napa), Lark Creek Inn (Larkspur), Terra (Napa), Acquerello, the Ritz (NY), Cafe Kati, Bix, Farallon, Domaine Chandon (Napa), Auberge du Soleil (Napa), the Meetinghouse (back in the day) and the list goes on and on to the detriment of my retirement fund.

By: Sharif KhanOn reading Susan Catos Time Magazine Canada piece titled, In Search of the Spiritual, I became increasingly annoyed at the realization that many people keep making the erroneous split between religion and spirituality, when they are one and the same. For example, in the Time Canada piece, Rabbi Leigh Lerner, who leads the Temple Emanu-ElBeth Sholom, a Reform congregation in Montreal, states, Religiosity may not be increasing, but spirituality is, confirming the notion that spirituality is separate and preferable to religion.I would have to disagree with this notion. Why do people keep insisting that the ritual and setting of worship is religion? It clearly is not.Religion comes from the Latin root re-ligare which means to re-connect. Re-connect with what? To re-connect with the inner Hero, the Divine, the Sacred. It is the ultimate Grail Quest, the heros journey, the spiritual journey, that we are all on: the Quest for Truth.Ask any Christian with a true understanding of
By: John HarricharanMarla wouldnt let me finish. Weve heard that song many times before. Lets not go over it again, John. Of course, the road could be long and the way dark. But there are tools available to deal with long roads and dark ways. Keep moving on and the road becomes shorter. Stay in the light and the darkness disappears. How do you do that? A close, personal relationship with the Chief, the God of all creation. There is nothing extraordinary about all this. Its not that your problems will be less difficult. What will happen is that youll become much stronger, much more capable of dealing with the difficulties of life. Youll live your life from a much higher point ofview.Sure, John, said Gideon, its not always easy, but no one ever said this Earth journey was going to be easy. As they say, they never promised you a rose garden. But then again, the way I figure it, if you want the roses, youve got to put up with the thorns. If you want the highs of living, youve got to deal with
It was quite good to attend to the newly held regional convention of Religious Brothers from different congregations here in Mindanao. Fifty-six delegates, all members of Association of Mindanao-Sulu Religious Brothers, gathered together to tackle issues in our society in our present time. With the theme, “Mission Possible: Spreading the Spirituality of Communion,” guest speakers were invited to talk about the relevance of our presence as Religious Brothers in relation to our national and local situations at present.
The keynote speaker, Br. Noelvic Deloria, a Brother of the Sacred Heart, addressed the assembly with what does spirituality of communion means as being tackled by the “Novo Milennio Inuente” (NMI). The main principle of NMI is to promote the spirituality of communion as a guiding principle of education. He explained that spirituality of communion is, first, that it indicates above all the heart’s contemplation of the mystery of God dwelling in

By: Vish Writer / Swami VivekanandaWhen I was a boy, this skepticism reached me,and it seemed for a time as if I must give up all hope of religion. But fortunately for me I studied the Christian religion, the Mohammedan, the Buddhistic, and others, and what was my surprise to find that the same foundation principles taught by my religion were also taught by all religions. It appealed to me this way. What is the truth? I asked. Is this world true? Yes. Why? Because I see it. Are the beautiful sounds we just heard (the vocal and instrumental music) true? Yes.Because we heard them. We know that man has a body, eyes, and ears, and he has a spiritual nature which we cannot see. And with his spiritual faculties he can study these different religions and find that whether a religion is taught in the forests and jungles of India or in a Christian land,in essentials all religions are one. This only shows us that religion is a constitutional necessity of the human mind. The proof of one religion depe
It is funny how just last week there was a talk about the topic of wealth as the world defines it.
First off, there was the buzz in the office that everyone should go get their Toto tickets because the prize money for the week was S$5 million (US$3.32 million).
I did not buy any tickets for the draw because I never had the habit of “buying hope” as I call it. Besides, I have never thought that I’d win one of the prizes — it is not in my personal history to have won anything that involved the ‘luck’ of the draw.
Then there was a letter in the Forum page of the national daily, The Straits Times, from a concerned parent about how mega churches adversely affect students, which naturally led to a rather lively debate on whether churches should be as rich as mega churches.
Now I don’t have anything against mega churches per se.

Yanik Silver: Thank you. Well, you just said something before that that I thought is interesting and, you know, we should talk on. And you said that we are meant to be healthy. And I will assume that the same way you said we are meant to be healthy, that we [...]
I am feeling both deep pain and great joy to learn that Mother Theresa, who ministered to the needs of the poor, sick, orphaned, and dying for over 40 years, spent virtually that entire time without sensing the presence of God in her life. If you haven’t learned about these startling revelations, see, for example, the article in Time titled “Mother Teresa’a Crisis of Faith”. It reports in
