The Federal Communications Commission is auctioning the 700 megahertz spectrum to increase bandwidth for mobile phone and Internet services. Television stations will be giving up that coveted section of the airwaves — it is extremely powerful, adept at going through walls — when they switch to digital transmission in February 2009.
“Consumers deserve more competition and innovation than they have in today’s wireless world,” said Google CEO Eric Schmidt in a statement Friday.

WSJ have reported that Google are set to apply to bid for the 700MHz spectrum in the January Federal Communications Commission. There have been rumours that Google were interested in the wireless spectrum and this latest report confirms them.
Apparently, Google are set to bid low on purpose so they won’t actually win the bid, but will place pressure on the FCC. Google obviously aren’t silly. They know if they build their own mobile network they’ll run into trouble with their current partners AT&T, Sprint Nextel and T-Mobile.

Telecom ministers form the European Union are backing plans to open up the 900Mhz radio frequencies which were once used solely for GMS phones to allow new mobile services like 3G wireless data networks.
It has been said that with the new plans in place, 300 million across Asia, Europe and Africa will be able to access mobile broadband services by 2012. The only problem this plan will face is the 20 year old legislation which limits lower frequencies to older mobile communications.
If the European Parliament agrees to the plan, the new legislation will override the current laws keeping the 3G services off the 900Mhz spectrum.
Once the European Parliament give the thumbs up, expect 3G and 4G to get a big boost!

According WSJ, insiders have informed the Journal that Google is planing to go at the auction alone which would attract offers estimated to be higher than 4.5 Billion Dollars. Today Google announced it intends to participate in the federal government’s upcoming auction of wireless spectrum in the 700 megahertz (MHz) band should the Federal Communications Commission adopt a framework requiring greater competition and consumer choice.This is a threat to cell phone providers; Sprint, AT&T, Verizon, T-Mobile, etc. There are many clues as to Google's future with wireless:Last November, Google's CEO Eric Schmidt stated that he sees a future where mobile phones will be free to users who accepts advertising on their handsets. Last March, we reported that it was rumored that Google is working on launching their own cell phone. Last April, we reported that Sina.com reported that Google will release its first cell phone by the end of this year or early next year.
