      Sonic surrealism against The Spectacle!
Damn that Spectacle. Tonight we made vibrations with winter itch. Vibrations so strong they apparently inspired banging on the ceiling from the “neighbor” downstairs. Acoustic sounds mostly, mind you. Seriously though, winter itch.

Beijing's 2008 Olympics and its cinematic Opening Ceremony: spectacle and its power to inspire
Mesmerized, I marveled at the jaw-dropping spectacle of the opening ceremony of the 2008 Beijing Olympics Games, enjoying it more than any other opening ceremony I've watched before. Surely this feast for the imagination was the most arresting, audacious and innovative yet? With its epic scope, theatrical scale, dreamy atmosphere, and experimental film-like form more at home in a cutting-edge

Today's press claims 4 billion people watched the 2-3 hour Beijing opening ceremony yesterday. That's 66% of the world's total population. After removing 10% for, say, 0-4 year old children and making an allowance for TV coverage only being to 89% of the world, then we're at circa 5.3bn 'available viewers'. So now we are at 75% of the available population.I missed it yesterday, because it was scre

      The Oshkosh Spectacle Is On!
Oshkosh is wall to wall private pilots this week. It’s a week long fest of vintage planes, shows, and even the much anticipated Martin Jetpack kicking things off with it’s first public flight. Life insurance will be well represented I’m sure, but before you buy into the best rates coming from those agencies, bring their information [...]

Et que le spectacle commence… !

      My Blue Spectacle is Down
The last minute call for volleyball was a burden to my tired brain. It was a hectic afternoon even though Weitat was driving and it made travelling easier. After work, we went to the car dealer's side for Jingkun to settle some documentation, and Weitat drove me to Tiong Bahru MRT while waiting. It had been long since I last walked around in Tiong Bahru Plaza and my brain was filled with memories.I

The river at Boat Quay will be the centre of attention this weekend as a extravagant fantasy world is being created by French Street Theatre Troupe IIotopie. The 'Contemporary regime of spectacle…machine-aided process of disciplinary attentiveness'
From: Global Gridlock: How the US Military-Industrial Complex Seeks to Contain and Control the Earth and Its Eco-System   [or, How the lesson of the Soviet downfall bounced off tin heads]   " ... Perhaps a little premature yet it appears that the US military-industrial machine is attempting to enclose the global open system; to transform it and enmesh it within a closed system of total information awareness; to cover, track, and gaze omnisciently over all flows, mobilities, and transactions. It is a move towards a total system, an attempt to gain some degree of mastery over the unpredictability of global flows through the core component of dominating informational flows. As part of this project the US military are currently establishing a linkage of satellites into what

Guy Debord, The Society of the Spectacle
Featured book review on Monsters and Critics :   Positing his belief that the integrated spectacle — his IS writ large — comprises the material reconstruction of "the religious illusion," Debord condemned its dictatorial freedom to proclaim "the predominance of appearances" while concealing its essential character "as a visible negation of life – and as a negation of life that has invented a visual form of itself . . . For what the spectacle expresses is the total practice of one particular economic and social formation; it is, so to speak, the formation's agenda. It is also the historical moment by which we happen to be governed . . . The spectacle is self-generated, and it makes up its own rules: It is a specious form of the sacred... . The spectator feels at home n

      What a Spectacle!
Work was absolutely amazing!  It was my first time working The Osborne Family Spectacle of Dancing Lights! If you’re not familiar with them, there are roughly five million lights that align New York Street at the Disney MGM Studios.  And back for the second year in a row, the lights dance ever few minutes to a synchronized pattern of favorite Christmas songs.   Each night the lights are turned on by a special set of guests selected by a specific cast member, and tonight, I was that cast member.  I guess it helps when one of my friends was coordinating for the night, but still, it was such an awesome experience.  The family I chose had never been to Disney World before, and where joining us for their first visit.  They had never seen our lights display, and were about to experience them firsthand by turning them on with the help of our oversized light switch located at the center of the display.  They where so excited, especially their two kids who gladly flipped on the lights

      Spectacle of Dancing lights return!
Another exciting happening that will soon shine brighter than the stars of Super Soap weekend is the beginning of The Disney MGM Studios Spectacle of Dancing Lights. Millions of lights align across the streets of America to create a brilliant holiday experience like no other. Every night, our guests will have the opportunity to see all lights bright up with the company of Disney provided snow, and warm cups of hot chocolate available too. It’s a great time of year that I look forward to being a part of!

Dark Tourism: Bearing Witness or Crass Spectacle?
It’s been two years since Hurricane Katrina devastated New Orleans. Slowly but surely, tourists are returning. Coupled with the city’s old bag of tricks is a new draw card: the chance to glimpse New Orleans’ destruction firsthand. But New Orleans isn’t the only place where suffering has turned into a tourist attraction. In New York, Ground Zero is the iconic memorial to the September 11 attacks. Outside the United States, places like Auschwitz and Cambodia’s killing fields have been drawing tourists for decades. The practice of visiting sites related to death and suffering is known as “Dark Tourism.” Dark tourism is not a new phenomenon. Scholars see parallels in such historical activities as gladiatorial contests in Ancient Rome, public executions in the Middle Ages, and guided tours of morgues in Victorian England. Today, dark tourism still presents a few hard questions for ethical travelers. Is it right to turn other people’s death or

Sired by Ratchin Spectacle English or western prospect
Seth is an absolutely stunning 15.3hh, loud Bay Overo 3 year old gelding. He has graced the covers of not one but two Equine magazines. Seth loves to work. He has been backed and lightly started, he lunges and trailers well. Great with his feet, ties, halters, leads and is UTD with everything. Very nice temperament and personality you can see this horse giving his rider his all and his rider will definitely have fun riding him. Well behaved, Seth is very easy to work around and get along with. He has some spunk and will certainly get you noticed in the show ring with his bold color, size and movement. He is a stunning horse who makes you say wow when you see him. He is an all around prospect, but would do extremely well in English, hunter, jumper, eventing etc. He is absolutely a candidate for the Trillium and A circuit. However that said he certainly has the speed to compete in Western events, but the temperament to also be an excellent trail or competitive trail prosp

The Clever Cynic: The Indianapolis 500...A True Spectacle
Dario Franchitti won the Indy 500...congrats, I guess. They call the Indy 500 "The Greatest Spectacle in Racing." I have to agree with this claim...no where on earth will you see more people make a spectacle of themselves. If you have ever been to the infield on race day I am sure you will concur.I have to wonder at the wisdom of such an event. A lot of fans travel a great distance to see the drivers go NOWHERE. They sit for several hours to see the drivers compete to see who can go in a circle and wind up where they started the fastest. It is estimated that about 400,000 people attend the race...to see 33 cars driven to death for no reason. If each person uses 10 gallons of gas to get to the track...(probably a conservative estimate) that would be 4,000,000 gallons of fuel burned (producing tons of pollution)...not counting the fuel spent to run the cars in the race and the motors and parts that are totally worn out during the race (not to mention all the resources used up during the

      My Space Spectacle
I was blown away by an article on "tiny living spaces in the super-sized city" in this morning's AM New York, the free newspaper I take each morning to help the nice gentlemen at the top of the subway stairs do his job. He's my New York equivalent to an elderly Wal-Mart greeter in Sylva, North Carolina. We never spoke more than two words at any given time to each other, but I enjoyed exchanging smiles with him on a regular basis. It's a Southern Hospitality thing that may be foreign to some Yankees - like biscuits-and-gravy, sweet tea and saying "hi" to strangers for no reason.I continue to find stories regarding living conditions in Manhattan astonishing even though I have accepted it as my own residential reality.amNY.com provides a glimpse into what is now my small world:*Living small in the Big Apple*How two can live in 295-sq. ft. "A Huge Human Spectacle"
As we eagerly await the official opening of Salvage, here's an oldie to tide us over...New York magazine's December review of Voyage was a tad overdue, but better late than never as the phrase goes!Jeremy McCarter's opinion is mixed, but as his title So Far, So Good indicates, it contains more praise than negativity.Despite initially stating that "the incompleteness of the story makes responding to it a bit tricky", he concurrently applauds "the beautiful vastness of the thing", concluding that "this huge human spectacle is its own reward, no matter what comes next".He also has minor criticisms of the transition from page to stage, noting that "plenty of jokes are clearer in the script than onstage". When remarking on Stoppard's delve into the romantic troubles of the Bakunin girls, he again expresses uncertainty, saying "it's never clear why we ought to care about their heartache, despite the best efforts of Jennifer Ehle and Martha Plimpton to persuade us".This considered, he se
