For those of you who don’t know (likely most anybody reading this), the tourism marketing slogan for Korea has been “Korea: Sparkling,” for the last year or so. Presumably, like so many local Asian T-shirts, the actual meaning of this slogan has been lost on its makers, and left as a source of endless ridicule and comedy amongst the English-as-a-first-language crowd. This time, around 43,000 units of the Sparkle City Charm Bracelets and Tack Pin Sets have been recalled as there are concerns that if ingested, the high levels of lead in the jewellery will have adverse health effects. The charm bracelets in question have silver-coloured star and butterfly charms and clear and pink beads hanging from a silver coloured chain. The Tack pins are silver with butterflies or stars with clear and pink beads. The product was sold nationwide in Big Lots stores from August 2005 through to August of this year.
