Times they are a-changin’ at Southgate Chevrolet
A lot has changed since Southgate Chevrolet opened its doors more than 27 years ago. What used to be surrounding farmland and grain elevators is now a bustling community and multiplex. Now, Southgate Chevrolet is growing, too, with this summer’s dealership-wide expansion. Every aspect of the dealership — located at 15100 Macleod Tr. S. is being updated, says general manager Corey Taill

Islands / Pomegranates Live @ Southgate House
If you recall we got a great live review of the Vampire Weekend a couple weeks ago that ended up vaulting the band into a SNL performance, is that next for Pomegranates? Maybe not but Caitlin was on the scene Monday night as the local indie poppers took the stage opening for Islands at [...]

Bon Iver Live @ Southgate House
(photo credit) This weekend in Cincinnati was different for a few reasons, the most obvious of which was the massive snow dump we received here, in March no less. Most areas around the tri-state got at least a foot of snow, with some getting much more. Needless to say, this kept many people at [...]

      Southgate not Sorry
Gareth Southgate does not believe Middlesbrough have been all but gifted a trip to Wembley this season. Boro are one step away from walking out at the world's most famous stadium as they prepare for Sunday's FA Cup quarter-final against Cardiff. In every round so far, the Teessiders have avoided Barclays Premier League opposition, arguably giving them an easier ride than their remaining rivals for the trophy. But manager Southgate said: "I don't think we should apologise for being in the position that we're in. "We've had draws that have been tough in their own way. "It doesn't matter what division the team you're playing against is in, they can still provide you with a very tough test. "We've overcome the hurdles that have been put in front of us; we've got another one that's equall

The Fiery Furnaces - Live @ Southgate House
The Fiery Furnaces returned to Cincinnati last night with a show at the Southgate House in Newport. The show not only marked their return to the area but also their return to record store shelves with the release of their new album, Widow City. If you have seen The Fiery Furnaces play live in the past, you know that, like their albums, they have a tendency to be quite polarizing. And polarizing might best describe the set from The Fiery Furnaces last night. The band played almost all new material from Widow City, with only a couple of exceptions through the set. This all taking place on the release day of Widow City, which, even in this leak and download heavy culture, had little to no familiarity with most of last nights audience. Eleanor warned everyone up front that the new material was what would be heard that night, even commenting at one point that they had “forgotten” the older material. Be sure to catch The Fiery Furnaces out on tour supporting this new album

Daniel Johnston - Live @ Southgate House
Daniel Johnston has been called many things during his time in the spotlight, some call him crazy, untalented and even worse. Others tag him as the “Indie Brian Wilson” due to his mental issues, but amazing songwriting ability. For those that have seen the documentary on the man, “The Devil And Daniel Johnston” know that simply dismissing Johnston as crazy, is a monumental mistake. Daniel played here in the Cincinnati area this weekend, on Friday night at The Southgate House. The show was part of a big tour for Daniel, who usually does not play much outside of his home state of Texas. The venue filled very quickly and the local openers saw more people in the room to hear them play than some have seen in quite awhile as a result. As the crowd packed in I could already hear people who were appreciative of Daniel and felt they could relate to his struggle. A few people nearby even mentioned they had driven all the way from Florida to attend the show. Danie

Andrew Bird Live @ The Southgate House
It has been awhile since I approached the legendary Southgate House in Newport to a sign explaining anything about a sold out show but there on the front door, a sign read, “Tonights Andrew Bird Show is Sold Out.” And while I knew the response would be a good one, a sold out (in advance) show was great to see. Of course it was not so great for those that were turned away. And this is how it should be, Bird is touring in support of what is arguably his best album to date in Armchair Apocrypha and is also now a part of the Fat Possum family. He has also recently added to his live lineup (which already includes talented percussionist Martin Dosh) with a bass player that also happened to make his electric guitar debut during the evenings set. So, as I’m standing there, getting ready for the set, the guy behind me mentioned that tonight’s set would be a rock based attempt. I kinda rolled my eyes at this thinking that Andrew Bird’s fans probably came for

      Paleo - 365 Days, 365 Songs + Tonight @ Southgate House
There is something about an artist that seems mysterious, something unknown and maybe even strange. Lots of artists throughout time, from Jandek to Devendra Banhard have possesed this mysterious persona at one time or another, usually to the delight of their fanbases. An artist that could easily fit into that realm is Paleo, though to a different degree maybe. Paleo is currently on tour and has been for the past 300 days or so. He has been living out of a van and playing a show almost every day, of which he books himself. He has also been writing and recording a song each and every day for a project he is calling “The Song Diary.” Paleo, also known as David Strackany, has already logged over 320 songs during this time, and you can find them all here on his website. The majority of the tunes have been recorded in an incredibly simple way, with just his voice and guitar contributing, with little ornamentation. In his own words, Paleo says “The Song Diary is not

Of Montreal - Live @ Southgate House
Many thanks to Dave for the following write up from last nights Of Montreal gig in Newport, KY at the Southgate House. No reports of nudity or anything too shocking from Kevin Barnes, but we dont mind. Seeing a mammoth tour bus in the back of the normally subdued Southgate House was not something I expected for a show by Of Montreal. Nor did I expect a line extending down the steps and out onto the sidewalk, approximately encompassing 200 people. Nor did I expect the show to be sold out. But all three happened, and all three magnify the spectacular level to which Kevin Barnes has taken his and his band’s musical career. Truly the show was a demonstration in theatrics, as Barnes changed costumes approximately five times, even standing on a ladder during “Gronlandic Edit” to fully complete his insanely colorful outfit. It was also the first time I’ve ever seen wall projections done at Southgate, with random cartoon images being projected onto a giant white curtain behind the

Cincinnati Concert Reminder - Ratatat Tonight @ Southgate
So, the SXSW week is over, and I know I have way more energy now than those that attended the festival and had an amazing time. I hope everyone enjoyed audio coverage from Mike, I thought it was fun. I’m starting off this Monday morning with a reminder that Ratatat is at the Southgate House tonight, it’s really a show you should make a point to be at. The most recent album from them, Classics, is an absolute gem. So, be sure to head down to Newport tonight if you are in the area and take in what should be a great show. It’s a 10$ show if you buy in advance on the SG website, and it’s 12$ at the door. The show should go off around 10pm. Annuals @ Southgate House
North Carolina’s Annuals were in town last night for their Cincinnati area debut at The Southgate House in Newport, KY. I walked in just in time to hear them begin their set with Complete or Completeing, one of the gems from their debut album, Be He Me . The Southgate House was rather subdued on a Tuesday night but I was pleasantly surprised with the turnout considering the night and the fact that Annuals have never played here before. I was also pleasantly surprised at the bands energy, especially from the lead singer Adam Baker, who cluthces the microphone like a famished traveller grasping his last drink of water. The crowd didnt really reciprocate the energy, and seemed to be cautiously observing the band for the majority of the set. But by the time the band launched into arguably the best track on the album, Brother, a decent amount of people had left their seats or standing positions in the back to get a closer look and listen. As with most young bands only touring a
