      South Korean Won Slids Deep
The South Korean won fell sharply against the U.S. dollar this week and reached its monthly low against the USD today despite the very weak dollar’s positions and the bullish trend in the Chinese yuan, which is the one of the dominating Asian currencies. The South Korean government officials are responsible for the strong pledges to support the weakening of the national currency to narrow the current account deficit, which has reached dangerous levels recently. The Strategy and Finance Minister, Kang Man-soo, stated that the current account balance is one of the primary objective of the monetary policymaking. He stands as a strong supporter for the won’s depreciating. The won pushing from the government’s side is accompanied with an elevated demand for the U.S. dollar, as the compani

South Korean scientists breed cats that glow in the dark
It was reported earlier this week that South Korean scientists have bred cats that glow in the dark by inserting a fluorescence protein gene into the DNA of clones, which makes them glow under ultraviolet light ! The procedure could help scientists develop treatments for genetic diseases in humans. Scientists led by Kong Il-keun of Gyeongsang National University produced three cats with altered fluorescence genes, the Science and Technology Ministry said. “It marked the first time in the world that cats with RFP genes have been cloned,” the ministry said in a statement. “The ability to produce cloned cats with the manipulated genes is significant, as it could be used for developing treatments for genetic diseases and for reproducing model (cloned) animals suffering from the same diseases as humans.” Fluorescence genes are used in other experimental animals when they are placed next to a gene that scientists want to study. They can easily see if the gene of inter

      South Korean Exports and Economy

South Korea is currently one of the world’s largest economic nations. The economic profile of South Korea includes sweeping economic reforms of the early 1960s, that were instituted by the Park government. These reforms emphasized labor-intensive light industries and exports. The government of South Korea carried out a currency reform, introduced flexible economic planning, strengthened financial institutions and stopped competing leaders of industries that it was attempting to control. In the 1970s, South Korea started to direct fiscal and financial policies toward promoting chemical and heavy factories, as well as consumer electronics and the manufacturing of automobiles. These manufacturing booms continued to grow quickly during the 1980s and early 1990s. Then in the late 1990s and early 200

      12 South Korean Hostages Freed
The Associated Press reported that 12 South Korean hostages have been freed by the insurgents. The 12 hostages were part of 23 Christians that were taken hostage by the militants on July 19 and held in Afghanistan. All of the hostages were not released together but they were all released near the city of Ghazni,Afghanistan. The hostages were set free into the care of the International Committee of the Red Cross. Not all of the hostages have been released. Two of them have been executed, two were set free earlier and 7 remain in the custody of the Taliban militants. They have agreed to release the rest of the hostages in the coming days. South Korea has agreed to withdraw its 200 non-combat troops from the area and will halt Christian missionary work in Afghanistan.

South Korean Guests of Taliban to be Released; Untolerable
According to The Korea Herald:"The Taliban will set free all 19 South Koreans taken hostage in Afghanistan since mid-July."The gist of the deal?"The agreement was reached on conditions that South Korea withdraw its troops stationed in Afghanistan by the year's end and impose a ban on its Christian nationals' missionary activities in the Southwest Asian country."Someone must think this is better than trading Taliban prisoners/fighters for the missionary hostages. Back on July 26th Chief Presidential Secretary for Security Policy Baek Jong-chun, following the slaying of one of the hostages said:'"The Korean government clearly states that the organization responsible for the abduction will be held accountable for taking the life of a Korean citizen. The killing of an innocent citizen cannot be justified under any circumstance or for any reason, and any such inhumane act can not be tolerated.'"Now that the abductors have been held "accountable," we can see how a nation refuses to tole

Riaz Hassan, the Pope, the Taliban and 22 South Korean Hostages
According to an editorial written by Australian professorial fellow and emeritus professor at Flinders University, Adelaide, Australia, Riaz Hassan, ("Interrupting a history of tolerance?"): "The Zionist project for a Jewish state was predicated on centuries of Jewish sufferings in Europe. Anti-Semitism was not an entrenched characteristic of Islamic ideology and history until the 20th century. Without doubt, European anti-Semitic writings and their translation into Arabic during the 19th century and German National Socialism in the 20th century were instrumental in instigating anti-Semitism throughout Arab lands" Strange revelation, not so much from Hassan, but more due to its publication in The Korea Herald today, following the extension of the deadline set by the Taliban for the release of 22 South Koreans for roughly the same number of Taliban in Afghanistan. Pope Benedict recently chimed in on the hostage situation that may lead to the murder in cold blood

South Korean Hostages Held by Taliban Orts - "they do not pay attention!"
Of the 22 remaining South Korean hostages taken by the Taliban in Afghanistan Taliban spokesman Qari Mohammad Yousuf said: “They are safe and alive,” and that the Afghanistan government, “has given us hope for a peaceful settlement of the issue.” The “hope” he spoke of is a positive turn as 23 people had initially been taken hostage while on a 10 day relief mission and unfortunately one had to be shot dead yesterday because the Afghan government “had not responded positively to its demands,” which was to a demand of the release “of eight Taliban prisoners in exchange for eight Koreans.” Another Taliban spokesman Qari Yousuf Ahmadi, complained of the government in Kabul: “They do not pay attention and did not give a positive response, so that’s why we killed one Korean hostage.” Chief Presidential Secretary for Security Policy Baek Jong-chun of South Korea furthered what will likely be observed as “non positive response,” by the “spok

“And it is why his campaign, regardless of its electoral fortunes, is shaping the Democratic race. Unable to dismiss his proposals as crazy radicalism, the other candidates have to be both bolder and more detailed than they would like.” The Economist provides interesting insight on the effects John Edwards is having on the Democratic primary. Despite historical (and Constitutional) pacifism, Japan seems to be militarizing. The Taliban is holding 23 South Koreans hostage in Afghanistan, demanding that Seoul withdraw its troops from the region. The captors claim failure to comply will result in their execution one by one, starting today. Trying to predict which minors will become sex-offenders — and trying juvenille sex-offenders as adults. South Korean Drinking Award
SEOUL (Reuters) - On second thought, maybe it was not a good idea to give an award for drinking to local government officials. The South Korean county of Koesan has decided it will discontinue giving out its “Drinking Culture Prize” after being flooded with complaints that the award promotes drunkenness among municipal employees and encouraged binge drinking. A county official said Wednesday the public misunderstood the intention of the award, which was meant to recognize government workers who go out to local restaurants and bars to meet citizens and hear what they have to say. “I guess it was our mistake that the purpose was misinterpreted,” said the official, who asked not to be named. The prize, which included round-trip tickets to the resort island of Cheju, was given out for the first time earlier this month to three municipal workers. Local media reported one winner had his driver’s license revoked in 2005 for drunk driving. Koesan, located about 1

South Korean Automakers Feeling the Heat
As Canada struggles to hammer out a trade agreement with South Korea, the automotive trade imbalance has taken center stage. And no wonder. According to the Canadian Auto Workers, South Korea imported fewer than 500 Canada-made vehicles last year-- as compared to the 200k Korean cars sold in Canada during the same period. In total, South Korean only welcomed 43,492 imported autos in '06. And for "good" reason. Although that meager total accounts for just four percent of South Korea's total new car sales, Chosun reports that it also represents a 32 percent increase over the previous year. And that's got South Korea worried. "Considering that Hyundai Motor's growth rate for the same period was 9.6 percent and Kia's was just 2.5 percent, the imported car sector's growth is alarming." At the same time, the types of cars entering the Republic has changed, from the early imported luxobarges to today's wider range of mass market motors. Honda, in p
