I've been wrestling for a few weeks with three incidents involving Korean taxis that occurred over the week that my sister visited. I am not new to taxis in Korea and I've heard all kinds of stories, especially involving Incheon Airport. We know that if you are approached in the airport by a taxi driver instead of catching one at the taxi stand, you have a good chance of getting ripped off, and it
I still found a lot of Korean boyfriends carrying their girlfriend's purses. I'm amazed at her balance in her high heels.Curt (hubby) happened to get into Incheon Airport a few hours ahead of my sister. A few weeks ago the R-16 b-boy dance competition happened in Suwon. I had a chance to go on Sunday. It was a lot of fun and I got to interview Jeff Chang who is a recognized hip-hop journalist and music critic. That interview is in the pipeline.
However, in the interim, Chang has written about R-16 for Salon.com. Check it out.
So you think they can break-dance? Forget the Bronx and South

It seems that just about everyone in every developed country of the world wants an iPhone 3G, but that may not be the case for South Korea. While it does seem that at least one carrier in the country is trying to negotiate a deal with Apple for the device, overall demand for it might just not be that great. SEOUL (Reuters) - South Korea's worst outbreak of bird flu has spread to the capital with agriculture ministry officials saying on Tuesday four dead birds raised at a Seoul district government office had tested positive.South Korea has confirmed 24 cases of the deadly H5N1 strain in poultry in about a month. It has killed more than 5 million chickens and ducks but that has not stopped the virus from spreading at its fastest rate since the country reported its first case in 2003.The four birds were among 57 chickens, ducks and turkeys raised in pens at the district office in the eastern part of Seoul. The ministry said it would take about a day to confirm if the dead birds had contracted the H5N1 strain. The city had culled all the birds at the site and was limiting access to a nearby zoo an

Every time a new store or restaurant opens here in Suwon, you will find displays of flowers lining the entrance. These are bought by family members and friends to show their support. This display happens to be in front of a new clothes store but we have also seen them when a restaurant opens. The tall flower displays remind me so much of funeral flowers. Typically back in the States, I would only see this type of display at a funeral so that's what I think of when I see them.I have a funny maedeup class story that shows another instance of cultural differences between the U.S. and South Korea. It was a beautiful day on Sunday and I decided to take a walk to Hwaseong Fortress. Cherry blossoms were everywhere, snowing down on you as you walked. Children were trying to catch the petals as they fell to the ground.
My picture taking skills have improved immensely. No, I didn't get a new camera. I decided to listen to what my husband has been telling me for months. The pictures turn out better if you keep you elbows down while taking them. He's right. I didn't have a blurry picture among all that I took. I should listen to him more often.
I wasn't the only one taking advantage of the gorgeous day.

I was on my way to yoga class when I spotted this table in the garbage. I took a closer look and saw the workmanship. I had to get to class but I was hoping it was still there when I returned. After class, I rushed home and it was still there. I called Curt (hubby) and told him I wanted to take it. He didn't care but only worried where would we put it. Please, that was the least of my concerns. So I went up to the guard to make sure it was really meant for the garbage. He left his post and came down to the garbage area with me. I pointed to the table and he gestured that I could take it. Really!!! It wasn't as heavy as it was large. He saw me struggling to get a good grip on it and he just took it from me. He carried it all the way up and into my apartment. Can you believe i

On Tuesday nights, I've been taking the bus from Suwon to Seoul for dinner and to work on maedeup with my Korean girlfriends. The bus is usually pretty empty and it's a quick trip to Seoul since we are going against rush hour traffic for the most part. I even managed to get the front seat all to myself which was directly across from the bus driver and nearest to the door. I called Curt (hubby) to tell him I was safely (or so I thought) on my way to Seoul. We were approaching the toll gate out of Suwon when I detected (along with the rest of the passengers) the smell of smoke. As this was happening, the bus driver pulled over and looked at the back of the bus. Huge clouds of smoke were pouring out of the end of the bus and some of the smoke was seeping into the interior of the bus.The bus dr

I immigrated to Canada 7 years ago with my parents from South Korea. During my years in South Korea, I clearly remember that import cars were second to scarce. I know, what is it?! It's a pair of Curt's jeans which I just leaned against the wall to show you how stiff our clothes are. No, there isn't any trick photography or that the jeans are supported in any way. This is after being laundered in our front loading washing machine with a half cup of softener and hung to dry. I think they put starch in the water here in South Korea. We don't have a dryer so everything is hung to dry. Curt was pretty impressed. Now for the strange week. On Monday as I was walking to yoga class, I noticed that I was being followed by a van who was honking at me for about a block. The windows of the van were darkened so I had no idea who it was and if it was really me they wanted. I wasn't going to stop to find out. The van finally drove in front of me o
Curt (hubby) took this picture of a street vendor in Seoul. Yikes, it doesn't look appetizing to me.A stone bed, not too appealing to this American who would sleep on nothing less than a pillow top mattress. Koreans do seem to love a hard mattress if one at all. My Korean girlfriends actually sleep on the floor and are very comfortable. I just can't imagine. Those pool cues can be painful! Tonight, dinner with Americans! I think we may try and take them to a Korean style restaurant. I'll be sure to bring the camera.

I GOT A PERM! I decided yesterday after yoga class that my hair seriously needed some help. Each day before yoga class, I get out my curling iron, curl my impossibly straight hair and then spray the heck out of it with hair spray. It's been pretty cold here so I leave the house with a hat on but I arrive at yoga with the curl still intact. Not so after class! My hair is a droopy mess.Of course, I didn't know that today was test day in yoga. We had to pair up (I paired up with my English speaking buddy) and had to do 45 minutes of testing. It was grueling. I could only do one sit up unassisted (meaning my buddy helped pulled me up each time) and after one particularly difficult exercise, I found myself flat on the floor unable to move. One of the yoga teachers came over and began t

A few weeks ago Curt (hubby) had a work dinner at this restaurant which is called Jang Su Ma Eul. It is a chicken restaurant and he came home raving about the food. It's about 10 miles from our apartment so he had a co-worker program it into our GPS so he could take me to it. As we started out, Curt hit the wrong button and erased the address. It took Curt a little time to figure out how to enter it again and I was crabby thinking we would become lost which is VERY easy to do in Korea. But he got it entered and off we went. The picture above is the restaurant. Isn't it the coolest building? This was the first course which was some kind of greens and radish. The radish came in a big piece but the waitress took out a pair of scissors and sliced it up for us. Curt said that when he w
The Philippines finished on a three-round total of 18 under par 198, with Korea's Ji-Yai Shin and Eun-Hee Ji runners-up on 16 under par 200. Japan and Taiwan tied for third on 13 under par 203. "This is a very big day for the Philippines and for golf in the country," Delasin explained. "This win is for all the Filipinos around the world," she added. "It was a real team effort," Rosales explained. "The win hasn't really sunk in at the moment, maybe it will when we have a few beers later. I loved the pressure of having to make each putt and I'm glad I came here to compete with my partner," she added. The two countries started the day tied for the lead, but Korea led by two shots at the turn and looked like the favourites to win the title after coming close on three previous occasions. Howeve

A partner of the Japanese DoCoMo, KTF hopes to be supplying the iPhone in South Korea sometime next year.
KTF seems rather confident that they will be the main provider of the iPhone for S. Korea, and if DoCoMo (KTF’s second largest shareholder) can succeed in nabbing Japan’s provider status, they’d certainly gain a chunk of revenue out of it. Steve Jobs’ ‘OK’ of the deal is apparently the only thing holding KTF back.
“We want to sell it, but Steve Jobs has been playing hard (in the negotiation),” says Vice President of KTF, Kim Yeon-Hak.
He continued with: “It’s difficult because the size of the Korean market is small. But someday we will do it, using our relationship with NTT Docomo.'’
We will continue to cover the iPhone moving into KTF’s hands as more pops up.

My doorbell rung, which is really quite unusual and through our security camera I saw that there were two Korean women at my door. So I opened the door and they started speaking in Korea quite animatedly. They were surprised to see me (a Westerner) and it only momentarily gave them pause. I said that I didn't speak Korean but they continued on. The next thing I know is one of the women took two wooden roller things and proceeded to rub them all over my face, talking in Korean the whole time. I was so surprised that I just stood there dumbstruck and let her. She finally stopped and took my hand. She then proceeded to use one of the rollers, but the opposite end, which is pointed and jabbed it into my fingertips and down the center of my hand. Hey, that hurt! The Koreans did not cease to speak during this whole episode continuing with their speech in spite of knowing I did not understand a word they said. The hand demo was finally finished and they said in English "Jesus?" I said "Ne" (
How to Make Money in South Korea:1. You must look like a Westerner.2. You must live in an area of South Korea that has little or no Westerners (this would never work in Seoul).3. You need to be purchasing something where actual won is exchanged. This has now happened to me twice so it's time to blog about it. The first incidence occurred a month ago at our local Home Plus. When I put my purchases on the conveyor belt at the checkout, the cashier was clearly shocked to see me. As he rang up my items, he continued to just stare at me. When it came time to pay, Ilooked at the register which showed the amount owed and I gave the cashier the money. I should have received back under 2000 won ($2.00 U.S.). He overpaid me by 8000 won. I tried repeatedly to return the money only to be denied. I finally just had to leave since I was holding up the line. The second incident occurred yesterday. I had to mail a package at the post office and this was my first time at a Korean post office. I walked i

Hot diggity now that's a deal right there:But...it gets better. Later that week I was inside the produce market at the Richmond Public Market and what did I see on sale? You guessed it, Mexican mangoes once again. The price this time? Only $0.39 cents each!! That just shows you the dis

Ulsan is a mix of sports, entertainment, variety shows and anime, all interspersed with frenetic Korean commercials. Aside from the occasional English words thrown on the screen or slipped in as slang, the programming is all in Korean. It’s a fun watch, even for non-Korean speakers like me.
More information can be found on Ulsan MBC’s website, including their programming schedule, if you can read it.
You can watch Ulsan MBC online for free at Imvite, along with thousands of other television stations from over 90 countries. If you have to leave home, take a little bit of home with you with Imvite.

Anyone else out there a big fan of FOX's hit series, Prison Break? We started watching Prison Break once we arrived in Seoul (thanks bit torrent). Anyways, the show is a huge hit and even South Koreans are eating it up. The show's hit star, Wentworth Miller aka Michael Scofield has been hitting up the advertising campaigns here. Along the likes of Gwyneth Paltrow, Wentworth, or "Sco-pield" as he is known in Korea, currently is part of Bean Pole's advertisements. Well, it looks like Wentworth is looking to move on to better things--advertising for French Cafe Coffee Milk! Check out this spread for all you fans out there, taken inside a Family Mart:The patrons and cashier thought I was crazy taking pictures of the Wentworth inside the store. I just find it funny that he is advertising coffee milk, in of all places South Korea! I have one student that is just crazy over "Sco-pield"...everyone watches the show here! We're heading to a wedding tomorrow and will be coming back Sunday. I h
If you or anyone you know is interested in doing exactly what I've been doing for the past year, please let me know! Even though my replacement is flying in later this month, my school is looking to hire another native English speaking teacher for September or October. You must have a college degree and a passport. Experienced teachers are preferred although not required. The job is five days a week (no weekend classes!), and pays $2000/mo, plus you're provided with a free apartment, round-trip airfare, and a $2000 contract completion bonus at the end of your contract. Let me know if you're interested!
I suddenly felt like I wanted to go watch a Football match, and what more, a AFC Cup Semi Final between South Korea and Iraq. It wasn't planned or anything like that, but I guessed its not one of those matches where the tickets get sold out or something like that. I went during lunch time to get my tickets and this was what I saw. Luckilly they were open , ahahaha.Furthermore it was between 2 very good teams, South Korea (favourites) and Iraq ( who did well to reach the semi finals , definitely my dark horse for this tournament). And the plus point is that, is was held at Bukit Jalil, a world class stadium, that leaks ( yups bocor wan).It started raining at about 5pm. By 6 the stadium was already wet. Luckilly this magnificent stadium, has full covers for spectators.A shot of where all the fans congregated for this matchListen to the chants of the two sets of fans, separated by one fence onlyMoving on I managed to mingle with both sets of fans and I took some videos to show for it.

South Korea scraped through to the Asian Cup quarter-finals with a fraught 1-0 win over Indonesia on Wednesday. The Koreans, bottom of Group D going into the final round of fixtures, took the lead in the 34th minute through Kim Jung-woo's deflected strike. The 2002 World Cup semi-finalists were the stronger team throughout at the Gelora Bung Karno Stadium in Jakarta but were made to sweat in a torrid second half after missing a series of golden opportunities.
Import cars in South Korea are rising in popularity rapidly with 269 import cars currently on sale in the country. With the US-S.Korea Free-Trade Agreement Pact taking effect next year, the numbers will only continue to rise. This agreement will clear any tariffs placed on imports from the US to South Korea and vice versa. The first-half bi-annual sales numbers of the best and worst-selling import cars in South Korea were released today. The new Honda CR-V (Korean-version pictured) was the positive note with 1870 vehicles sold in the timeframe. On the negative note, the Saab 9-3 Arc SportCombi TiD did not make it past the showrooms with nil sales. In order of the highest sales to lowest, the top 10 selling import cars in South Korea were: Honda CR-V (1870), Lexus ES350 (1596), BMW 320d (880), Infiniti G35 Sedan (876), BMW 523d (772), Lexus LS460 (752), Lexus IS250 (706), Audi A6 2.4 (690), Peugeot 307SW HDI (524) and the Volkswagen Passat 2.0 TDI with 475 vehicles sold.Something interes
There are lots of places to buy snacks in Seoul. One thing that hit me by surprise was the large concentration of Dunkin Donuts, Baskin Robbins, Starbucks, and Coffee Bean locations on every street corner. This is to go along with the plethora of convenience stores and Krispy Kreme locations. One of the largest American pretzel chains, Auntie Anne's is highly popular in Korea and can be found within the food court of many Hyundai Department Stores.Since I love eating food (you probably do too I assume) here are some pictures of my first Auntie Anne's pretzel. Although there are locations in Canada, there were no locations near my home in BC. Regardless, South Koreans are crazy about Auntie Anne's pretzels just like they are crazy about Krispy Kreme. There are always huge line ups for fresh pretzels! EDIT: Here's a fresh picture of their line ups taken today! For 2000w ($2USD) you can wrap your hands around fresh baked pretzel. I didn't take a picture of the line up because I was to
If you're not already aware, South Korea is one of the world's hot spots when it comes to playing video games online. You might remember from my earlier post about Starcraft in South Korea. Kids and adults play games such as Sudden Attack (very similar to CounterStrike), MapleStory, and the most popular game of all--Starcraft (or "Star" in Konglish)!Anyways, I had my first PC Bang/Starcraft experience recently. I have always heard that these PC Bangs were notorious for being smoky--those stories are true indeed. After finishing our time in the PC Bang, my clothes smelled like I had just come out of a pub. I went to this PC Bang the same day that I visited the 2007 Seoul Wine Market with Tae, Jay-hook, and Sam-jahng (did I get your guys' names right? I need a keyboard with Hangul, hehe). All three of them are Starcraft veterans and when I mentioned about wanting to experience a PC Bang in Korea, finding one was not difficult at all! They are literally on every street corner in the ci
When you're out wandering the streets of Seoul, there is always something to see, especially if you hit up the main attractions that have lots of people. During a recent visit to Insadong (when I took pictures of Lotus Lanterns) I found myself getting lured to every crowded stall or miscellaneous line up. What's one of the best way to get free things in South Korea? The "monkey see, monkey do" phenomenon sure is fun, don't you agree? Just because there are a lot of people densely crowded around a stall, does that mean you should show up to investigate what's going on? OF COURSE YOU SHOULD! Anyways, our curiosity paid off as Tae and myself were able to score some free frozen yogurt and popcorn (we passed on the helium balloons)! The streets of Insadong are always crowded on the weekends:Waiting in line for "ice cream free" is quite the way to spend your Saturday afternoon:Here's a video of me receiving my ice cream (it tasted like frozen yogurt):What's the best way to cleanse your p
If you are not aware, there currently is red hot frozen yogurt war going on in Los Angeles. There's a frozen yogurt chain called Pinkberry (also known as "Crackberry" to many celebrities, such as the locked up Paris Hilton; the original "Crackberry" is Research in Motion's wireless handheld device, the Blackberry). One blogger suggests it could become the next Starbucks. Some say it's a knock off of the Red Mango frozen yogurt chain in South Korea. I've never tried Pinkberry, but I'd like to compare the taste with Red Mango. There is a Red Mango location about 5 minutes away from us in Mokdong. With the weather heating up, I expect us to be making a few more visits in the near future. Here are a few recent pictures from our trips to Red Mango. I must admit, this frozen yogurt tastes awesome--some of the best I've ever had. It definitely helps cool you down on a humid and hot summer's day. This was from the Mokdong location. We ordered a regular sized frozen yogurt with five toppin
I have to be up early tomorrow to head to Yatap Station (it takes 1.5 hours to get there from Mokdong) to do some filming for the online lessons that our students watch. So I will post something interesting tomorrow for your reading pleasure. I just had to create a lesson plan on what I am going to do for tomorrow. Since I am traveling so far, I also have to wake up to get ready at 7:30am--I usually get up at 10:00am (sleeping in rules, baby)!Anyways, I'll leave you with a picture of my breakfast tomorrow morning. As you can see, they are frosted flakes but they are whole wheat. Whole wheat cereal helps keep Tony the Tiger regular!

SEOUL (Reuters) -- Unionized workers at Hyundai Motor Co. and other automakers said today they planned work stoppages for later this month as part of protests against a U.S.-South Korea free trade agreement.Last year, Hyundai's union members staged strikes for a total of 33 days as they called for higher wages and better working conditions. Some of the protests were made in opposition to new labor laws and free-trade talks with the United States. Those actions cost 115,683 units in lost output, or 1.6 trillion won ($1.72 billion), Hyundai estimated.Members of the Korean Metal Workers' group, which include the auto industry unions, will take turns by region in staging two-hour strikes daily from June 25-27.All members will hold a four-hour strike on June 28 and a six-hour stoppage on June 29, the metal workers' union said."We, as a member, will follow the group's decision," a Hyundai Motor union official said, asking not to be identified.Workers at Hyundai affiliate Kia Motors Corp.,
On Wednesday Tony Snow said that President Bush would like to see a lengthy US presence in Iraq like the one in South Korea to provide stability. The US has had thousands of troops in South Korea for the last 50 years to guard against an invasion from North Korea.
In Iraq, the “last throws” of the insurgency have been replaced with an all out civil war, and Bush’s campaign promises of “no nation building” were all lies. Mission accomplished.
This is something I have real mixed emotions about. I was stationed in Europe and know that sometimes very long term military commitments are necessary. We have had a military presence in Britain, Japan, Germany, Italy, Spain, Holland and any number of other countries for over 60 years. I was at NATO bases for all of those countries except Japan while I was in. And it was necessary. With the fall of the Soviet Union that is not so much the case any longer. But now NATO is expanding into previously Soviet bloc countries at an incredible rate. Will the same sort of long term occupation be necessary for Iraq? I certainly hope not. I read the Presidents rather frank opinion on the subject then read Tony Snows and Snow seemed to be doing a lot of back pedaling explaining what the President really meant. I wish that someone had asked Tony Snow about all the new military bases under construction in Iraq. They sure look like long term committments to me. One thing I am certain of is that t
Remember the recent announcement about the upcoming release of Starcraft 2 in South Korea? Anyways, that game got my students (and some Korean staff) super excited. This is nothing new, but if you're not aware already, South Korea is one of the most connected countries in the world. People here play Sudden Attack 24/7 in PC Bangs, also known as computer gaming cafes. I really need to visit one before I depart from South Korea.A major "massively multi-player online role-playing games" (or MMORPGs) that is hugely popular here amongst elementary kids is the Korean developed Maple Story. This online multiplayer game basically is an adventure game where you can spend real money to buy enhancements. It's huge here--almost all my younger students like to play Maple Story when they have free time (which is next to none). Maple Story is coming out for the Nintendo DS which also has people excited. The purpose of this post is to let you in on something...which I like to call "Korean pogs". It'
In many cases, when you are offered a job in Korea, you will be expected to come immediately. Most arrangements are not made months in advance. This means that there’s a strong chance that you’ll find yourself running around like mad, trying to get everything done for your work visa – not to mention preparing yourself to leave your country for a year.
In order to get an E2 Working Visa for
