      Springtime in Suwon, South Korea
It was a beautiful day on Sunday and I decided to take a walk to Hwaseong Fortress. Cherry blossoms were everywhere, snowing down on you as you walked. Children were trying to catch the petals as they fell to the ground. My picture taking skills have improved immensely. No, I didn't get a new camera. I decided to listen to what my husband has been telling me for months. The pictures turn out better if you keep you elbows down while taking them. He's right. I didn't have a blurry picture among all that I took. I should listen to him more often. I wasn't the only one taking advantage of the gorgeous day. I have never seen cherry blossoms in person and they were truly breathtaking."Downtown" by Petula Clark always gets me going when I need it. I found this version

      Garbage Picking in South Korea
I was on my way to yoga class when I spotted this table in the garbage. I took a closer look and saw the workmanship. I had to get to class but I was hoping it was still there when I returned. After class, I rushed home and it was still there. I called Curt (hubby) and told him I wanted to take it. He didn't care but only worried where would we put it. Please, that was the least of my concerns. So I went up to the guard to make sure it was really meant for the garbage. He left his post and came down to the garbage area with me. I pointed to the table and he gestured that I could take it. Really!!! It wasn't as heavy as it was large. He saw me struggling to get a good grip on it and he just took it from me. He carried it all the way up and into my apartment. Can you believe i

War Of Words In North And South Korea
The war of words continues to escalate in North and South Korea as both sides found themselves responding to comments by the other. North Korea was upset at comments made by a South Korean general who said his nation would militarily respond if attacked from the north. The paranoid North Korean government interpreted his remarks [...]

Another Lesson Learned Here in South Korea
On Tuesday nights, I've been taking the bus from Suwon to Seoul for dinner and to work on maedeup with my Korean girlfriends. The bus is usually pretty empty and it's a quick trip to Seoul since we are going against rush hour traffic for the most part. I even managed to get the front seat all to myself which was directly across from the bus driver and nearest to the door. I called Curt (hubby) to tell him I was safely (or so I thought) on my way to Seoul. We were approaching the toll gate out of Suwon when I detected (along with the rest of the passengers) the smell of smoke. As this was happening, the bus driver pulled over and looked at the back of the bus. Huge clouds of smoke were pouring out of the end of the bus and some of the smoke was seeping into the interior of the bus.The bus dr

      April Fool's South Korea Style
Wonder why your college or university students are running around in their high school uniforms today? It's April Fool's Day, so they dusted them off. That's bad for me since I avoid Korean students in uniform like the plague. However, now that I realize it's not my worst nightmare and that my job isn't being overrun by high school students sitting for a test, I'm okay.

Beware Hyundai: Nissan and Toyota entering South Korea by 2009
I immigrated to Canada 7 years ago with my parents from South Korea. During my years in South Korea, I clearly remember that import cars were second to scarce. I would regularly pass by residential parking lots labelled "No Import Cars". Patriotism, perhaps? 7 years later, the scenario is completely different. Import cars are rapidly becoming cheaper and alongside premium makes such as BMW and

A Strange Week in Suwon, South Korea
I know, what is it?! It's a pair of Curt's jeans which I just leaned against the wall to show you how stiff our clothes are. No, there isn't any trick photography or that the jeans are supported in any way. This is after being laundered in our front loading washing machine with a half cup of softener and hung to dry. I think they put starch in the water here in South Korea. We don't have a dryer so everything is hung to dry. Curt was pretty impressed. Now for the strange week. On Monday as I was walking to yoga class, I noticed that I was being followed by a van who was honking at me for about a block. The windows of the van were darkened so I had no idea who it was and if it was really me they wanted. I wasn't going to stop to find out. The van finally drove in front of me o

Out and About in South Korea
Curt (hubby) took this picture of a street vendor in Seoul. Yikes, it doesn't look appetizing to me.A stone bed, not too appealing to this American who would sleep on nothing less than a pillow top mattress. Koreans do seem to love a hard mattress if one at all. My Korean girlfriends actually sleep on the floor and are very comfortable. I just can't imagine. Those pool cues can be painful! Tonight, dinner with Americans! I think we may try and take them to a Korean style restaurant. I'll be sure to bring the camera.

The Must Have Winter Accessory in South Korea 2008
It's the animal or character hat. I have seen both adults and children wear these hats. We had to buy this Winnie-the-Pooh hat and send it to our grandson, Noah. One of our gasoline attendants wears a wolf one and I always do a double-take when I see him in it. But I bet they are warm!

Another First for Me in South Korea
I GOT A PERM! I decided yesterday after yoga class that my hair seriously needed some help. Each day before yoga class, I get out my curling iron, curl my impossibly straight hair and then spray the heck out of it with hair spray. It's been pretty cold here so I leave the house with a hat on but I arrive at yoga with the curl still intact. Not so after class! My hair is a droopy mess.Of course, I didn't know that today was test day in yoga. We had to pair up (I paired up with my English speaking buddy) and had to do 45 minutes of testing. It was grueling. I could only do one sit up unassisted (meaning my buddy helped pulled me up each time) and after one particularly difficult exercise, I found myself flat on the floor unable to move. One of the yoga teachers came over and began t

Cool Restaurant in Suwon, South Korea
A few weeks ago Curt (hubby) had a work dinner at this restaurant which is called Jang Su Ma Eul. It is a chicken restaurant and he came home raving about the food. It's about 10 miles from our apartment so he had a co-worker program it into our GPS so he could take me to it. As we started out, Curt hit the wrong button and erased the address. It took Curt a little time to figure out how to enter it again and I was crabby thinking we would become lost which is VERY easy to do in Korea. But he got it entered and off we went. The picture above is the restaurant. Isn't it the coolest building? This was the first course which was some kind of greens and radish. The radish came in a big piece but the waitress took out a pair of scissors and sliced it up for us. Curt said that when he w

Philippines defeats South Korea, winning Women's World Cup
The Philippines finished on a three-round total of 18 under par 198, with Korea's Ji-Yai Shin and Eun-Hee Ji runners-up on 16 under par 200. Japan and Taiwan tied for third on 13 under par 203. "This is a very big day for the Philippines and for golf in the country," Delasin explained. "This win is for all the Filipinos around the world," she added. "It was a real team effort," Rosales explained. "The win hasn't really sunk in at the moment, maybe it will when we have a few beers later. I loved the pressure of having to make each putt and I'm glad I came here to compete with my partner," she added. The two countries started the day tied for the lead, but Korea led by two shots at the turn and looked like the favourites to win the title after coming close on three previous occasions. Howeve

KTF Wants to bring iPhone to South Korea
A partner of the Japanese DoCoMo, KTF hopes to be supplying the iPhone in South Korea sometime next year. KTF seems rather confident that they will be the main provider of the iPhone for S. Korea, and if DoCoMo (KTF’s second largest shareholder) can succeed in nabbing Japan’s provider status, they’d certainly gain a chunk of revenue out of it. Steve Jobs’ ‘OK’ of the deal is apparently the only thing holding KTF back. “We want to sell it, but Steve Jobs has been playing hard (in the negotiation),” says Vice President of KTF, Kim Yeon-Hak. He continued with: “It’s difficult because the size of the Korean market is small. But someday we will do it, using our relationship with NTT Docomo.'’ We will continue to cover the iPhone moving into KTF’s hands as more pops up. Thanks: The Korea Times Bookmark to:
