      Soulful Supplications
Children sometimes say the darndest, cutest things. At our house lately it seems to happen at prayer time. We try to teach our children to think back on their day before praying to reflect on the blessings they received or maybe to recognize some mistakes they've made that they can work on and ask God for help with. Now children, in particular little children, are very honest about their feelings,

      Soulful Sunday
Last night, I did a lot of soul searching. I had been in emotional pain for a very long time. I felt that I need to start really taking a look at what was causing some of this pain. So last night I sat down and wrote in my regular journal. By the time the entry was done, my hand was cramped around my pen (now I remember why I hate writing instead of typing!) and I was in tears. It was a very

Maliq & d'Essentials: Soulful music, Indonesian style
It's every new band's worst nightmare; one of your first gigs and there's no one in the audience. This was what happened to the now-firmly-established young Indonesian band, Maliq & d'Essentials, when they played one Monday night at the JAMZ jazz bar and club in the Aston Hotel back in 2003. From their early days of playing in empty bars, Maliq now regularly play in front of crowds of thousands of screaming young fans at home and have also started touring in other Asian countries. They no longer have any reason to pretend. Maliq & d'Essentials play the Java Jazz Festival on Saturday night, March 3 at 7 p.m. Their new album, Free Your Mind, will be released next week.

      Some soulful toilets
Mama Nems'805 S. Kirkman Rd. #106Orlando, FL 32811Where is it?To the right of the cashier. What's it like? This is a homey yet subtly chic soulfood restaurant on the west end of Orlando. What does that mean? Well, the emphasis is on comfort food and Southern tradition, and the food is reasonably priced, delicious and plentifully portioned, yet the dining room is overtly sparse (about 15 tables inhabit in the whole place, whereas the space could easily accomodate more) and the walls are dotted with modern and folk art paintings, which gives the impression a feng shui artist played a part in the interior design. The restaurant's pseudo-Asian-looking logo, which covers the back wall of the place, makes you feel like it's a place ripe for franchising -- even if te waitstaff talks endlessly about its formadible ties to the church down the street.Having said that, the bathrooms are pretty straight and narrow. New as can be and clean as a whistle, but also lacking that bit of inspiration t

      Ruben Studdard - Soulful
The first full-length effort from second-season American Idol winner Ruben Studdard is an unassuming album that will surely please his fans. Studdard works in the vein of mainstream R&B crooners like Luther Vandross; here, he even covers "Superstar," the Leon Russell/Bonnie Bramlett song associated with Vandross. Other familiar material includes a close, if foreshortened, copy of Al Green's version of "How Do You Mend a Broken Heart," and the standard "For All We Know," so memorably sung by Billie Holiday on Lady in Satin. A fair bit of time is spent making sure we know that despite his success, Ruben hasn't changed. Indeed, he comes off as modest and charming; as for electrifying, he's less so. As a CD that could've easily pandered much more to the whims of casual TV viewers, though, Soulful is a perfectly acceptable debut. - Rickey WrightSongs on Album:1. Sorry 20042. No Ruben3.
