If sorrow must enter a happy home, how he must rejoice when that home is a Christian one, when he is met as God's own messenger, received as His own divine teacher, and before he departs has permission asked "his heavenly feet to lave." How happy we shall be when we have learned to treat all God's messengers as we should treat Him if He came in person! For He is sending th

Not because of what this day stands for - or used to anyway - but because our politicians give mere lip service to it. I hate them all. Christopher Barzak’s One for Sorrow is one of the more unusual coming-of-age novels I have ever encountered. Although it has been compared with the likes of Catcher in the Rye and The Lovely Bones, it has far more differences than it has things in common with them, sharing only a portion of the broadest themes of those two novels. This very sad YA novel, especially its ambiguously hopeful
I rarely answer my cell phone when driving, but when it rang that April afternoon, I answered. I almost didn’t have to. I answered, knowing instinctively what the news was. My friend asked me where I was and I explained I was driving back in town from an appointment. She told me to call her when I was back in town. When I had left the hospital for an appointment in a nearby town, Bill had been “relatively” stable and I had planned on going right back. But I drove home instead because I knew, as my friend would confirm, that Bill had died.Bill and I had dated for several months, spending daily time together and talking about the future. At the end of March we took a break, but I anticipated getting back together. In April, Bill (at the age of 41) had an aortic aneurysm. He lingered for

That lets it hop a little from his hand,

And with a silken thread plucks it back again,
So loving-jealous of his liberty.

I would I were thy bird.

Leap Day is actually a pretty sad reminder for me. It is not one of my most favorite days. I remember as a child it was considered a fun day, after all it only came around every four years. That little bit of excitement melted away 16 years ago. It is hard to believe that it has been that long. I thought that I would share what happened on Leap Day those many years ago to turn my enthusiasm for the day to one of sorrow, melancholy, but also one of hope.I was 20 years old and expecting our second child. I developed pre-eclampsia with her and delivered her prematurely. It was severe and we both were at risk of loosing our lives. The doctor's said there is no known cause for this condition. I was an even more peculiar case because this is typically a first pregnancy condition. This

Parting is such sorrow.....Yes its true...Pink Pinkerton had to say good by to the boys. The little scamp was starting to take to wondering out of the yard, down the canyon, and onto to the street which is directly below my house. To make these matters worse, he had Daisy Girl in tow, right behind him, so I was left with no alternative, but to cut the boys loose.Being that this is a spiritual dog blog, I began to contemplate the deep ramifications of this grave decision, and how such a thing might impact my own life. Thus as I reflected upon the deeper meaning about this particular subject, I then came up with this spiritual nugget;Lets take a moment to reflect on how easy life could be for all the wife's and girlfriends of the world, if we could just command the hubby or boyfriend to respect our wishes such as this;"Honey....I'm sorry but we gotta cut the boys loose, you've been straying from the home front a little too much for my comfort, so I feel its time to let the boys go...o

Why Sorrow Over
by Stephen Todd Jones
Why sorrow over
That had not
For the same is a
Heavy thought?
Why not enumerate
All here had
Rather than accounting
For those bad?
In content, do you
Not strive to
Obtain that reserved,
It seems, for few?
Or is content a state
Where you are
Never seeking that
From way afar?
Is dreaming wrong to
Do here when
You are dissatisfied in the
State you are in?
Are we not to seek to
Improve our lot,
Or as the fatalist here,
Are we not?
God, reveal to me the
Answer to those,
Or is there a definite
As I here suppose?

The Merseys had a big pop-rock hit in the UK in 1966 with "Sorrow," later covered by David Bowie (on Pinups), but never followed up on the promise of this successful debut. They were a spinoff group from the Merseybeats, who were one of the more popular Liverpool bands of the British Invasion, although they never managed to land a hit in the United States. The Merseybeats split up in 1966, with lead guitarist Tony Crane and bassist Billy Kinsley forming the Merseys. Unlike the Merseybeats, a self-contained quartet, the Merseys were a duo, backed onstage by the Fruit Eating Bears, who had two drummers and featured Joey Molland (later of Badfinger) as lead guitarist. The Merseys were managed by Who managers Kit Lambert and Chris Stamp, which seemed a solid indicator of future growth, although Kinsley has said Lambert and Stamp naturally focused much more of their attention on the Who. Their engaging, robustly produced cover of the McCoys' "Sorrow" went to #4 in Britain in 1966, although

Okay, it has been awhile. There have been many things that, obviously, I wasn’t ready to talk about. I like to go into hiding when things aren’t going my way. Now things are looking a little differently.First, I’d like to mention an incredible hospice experience. I don’t think I can adequately convey how instantly bonded with a beautiful loving energy I shared with the people in this brief, less than 24 hour experience. Suffice it to say, this is what keeps me in hospice despite often impossible and/or troubling family situations. Oh, I met a very interesting, artistic, intelligent, sensitive man. We talk every night. We spent Sunday afternoon together and we’re planning on getting together during the week. He works out of town, in Ruidoso, NM as a production manager at the

This week's Star Magazine reports that a "rehab" fling at Promises with a married man is what sent Lindsay Lohan into a "total meltdown- and her arrest on July 24."
Warning, this is sad and graphic. A source says, "Lindsay's rehab romance was pathetic. He was a married guy from the Midwest with a nice body. He was having fun with Lindsay. She called him her 'rehab boyfriend.' They would fool

The Lord is the everlasting God, the Creator of all the earth. He never grows weak or weary. No one can measure the depths of his understanding. He gives power to the weak and strength to the powerless. Even youths will become weak and tired, and young men will fall in exhaustion. But those who trust in the Lord will find new strength. They will soar high on wings like eagles. They will run and not grow weary. They will walk and not faint.Isaiah 40:28-313 different co-workers in different situations of need. One preparing for his death, one disabled by an illness, and one faced with the loss of a loved one. Hope of overcoming a stroke, despair of one's impending death, and sorrow of the loss of a mother. Who has not faced one of these situations or soon will? How do we react to others in that stage in life? Do we show kindness or callousness? My father emphasized helping that brother or sister in need. How easy it is not care. For one to become desensitized by everything around you. S
What I think:
One for sorrow
Two for joy...
But what does it mean? What does it mean to see one magpie? Or two?
Is it all a personal thing, based upon superstitions we've heard since we were very young, like 27 years old (or younger, if you're going on 26, for example)?
But I covered this rhyme, along with its implications for me personally, on March 5th last year. Read about it here ->

The last week has been a hard one for many. Senseless bombings shredded public markets and buildings in Iraq, claiming dozens of lives. In Virginia, a college was left reeling in shock after a gunman ripped classrooms apart with a spray of bullets. And in Turkey, the tiny Christian population was devastated by the slaughter of three of it's own. What to say in the face of this? Indeed, what should we as Christians say?First, remember that God is sovereign. No matter what befall us, nothing takes Him by surprise and all is under His control. In the midst of sorrow and anguish we can rest in the knowledge of His care of and love for us. When things seem to go horribly wrong, open your Bible to Isaiah 40 and let the reminders of God's sovereignty comfort and uplift you. Second, remember that God is perfect justice. The perpetrators of this evil will not go unpunished. Psalm 37 assures the righteous that the wicked will have their reward and that their apparent prosperity is fleeting. Tr

Lew Rockwell writes:
I know that Scooter Libby, like any high-ranking apparatchik, has blood on his hands. Still, I find it hard to celebrate his conviction. First, punishing anyone for the crime of naming a CIA spy violates the first amendment. Second, he was not accused of this offense, but of lying to the FBI, etc. about it. […]
If the Bush administration had wanted to repeal the Intelligence Identities Protection Act at any time before the Plame incident, thereby making us all a little bit freer in a way we’d probably never notice (and themselves much freer to lie us into war), they could have. Hell, the GOP controlled Congress at the time! It would’ve been a breeze. But they did not wish to decriminalize that behavior, or any other. Moreover, they would have thrown me or Lew under the goddamn prison had one of us done the revealing.
Second, the fact that Libby was convicted of perjury and such instead of mass murder, which he is certainly an accomplice to, should be file
