The GPS capabilities of the device were testes there, however the results were not quite accurate because the testing ground was underground. A Sony Computer Entertainment representative has confirmed to Shacknews that developers can now take full advantage of the PSP’s CPU following the late May release of the system’s version 3.50 firmware. Rumors of the unlocking were initially reported by fansite PSP Updates via an unnamed source.
Previously, developers were only able to run the CPU at 266MHz rather than its full potential clock speed of 333MHz, though most games ran at only 222MHz. High Impact Games’ Ratchet & Clank: Size Matters, released in February, is said to run at 266MHz. Hackers long ago discovered methods to run the PSP’s CPU at full speed, the benefits of which include a smoother framerate for certain games, at the cost of reduced battery life. There is no word yet if this update enables previous PSP releases to run at 333MHz, something hacked PSP firmware has enabled in the past.

The kicker, though, is that it's the retailers that are asking for a price drop.The Nintendo DS Lite costs about half as much as a PSP and it's a little harder to convince a customer to pony up the extra bucks. Sure, the PSP has added functionality in terms of multimedia and it has a much larger, brighter screen, but apparently that's not enough. In fact, some stores are threatening to take the PSP off their shelves altogether if Sony doesn't lower the wholesale price. Yup, sales are pretty bad.It's been confirmed that a second-generation PSP is in the works, so you'd expect Sony to drop the price on the current incarnation if only to move the stock. But man, Sony's really taking a beating lately, with people hating on the very expensive PlayStation 3 and the PSP.
