What happens when an electronics behemoth jumps into DSLRs? In Sony's case, it pushes development into overdrive for a couple of years. Then it makes a full-frame 24.6MP CMOS sensor and steals the title of most megapixels in the 35mm format from Canon, which has held the title for as long as anyone can remember. But a camera is more than just megapixels. And the Alpha 900 ($3,000, street, body onl

The Alpha 900 represents in a nutshell the almost schizophrenic nature of Sony's digital camera division, which can market compact cameras with smile detection and a Playstation style user interface at the same time as this, perhaps the most pared-down, frill-free and unashamedly 'serious' DSLR we've seen in a long time. You can't help feel that Sony's long-held worry that as a consumer electronics
Sony’s Alpha DSLR-A900 feels like it’s been with us for a long time – after all, the prototype was first shown back in March 2007 and its sensor unveiled in January 2008. So unlike its rivals which are often sprung with little notice, we’ve long-known what Sony’s flagship DSLR would look like and speculated how its new 24 Megapixel full-frame sensor may perform in practice.Despite this a
The Alpha A200 was a solid performer, but at the end of the day what it really had going for it was one key spec: a fantastic price point for its level of specification. With street prices for the A350 all in the $800 range, the value equation changes somewhat. Sure, the A350 adds an excellent live view system – undoubtedly the most highly functional and uncompromised one on the market. I can't

Friends are always asking me for digital camera recommendations, expecting me to suggest a digital SLR. I almost always end up recommending point-and-shoots. People like the idea of a digital SLR with its implied quality and control. But most of the time, the complexity of a DSLR and the post-processing required are the opposite of what they need and a less expensive compact digital camera is the

PRICE: $689.00 - $800.00With easy-to-use controls, an innovative Live View system with an excellent tilting LCD, the 14.2-megapixel Sony A350 has some nice features that make it stand out from the increasingly crowded entry-level D-SLR space. The biggest problem with this camera is that you can get the nearly identical 10.2MP A300 for $200 less, which makes the A350 a bit of a tough sell. Is the b
Overall, image quality was Excellent from ISO 100 through 800. It slipped to Extremely High at ISO 1600-3200, when noise reduction, a default setting, kicked in at the expense of resolution. This dropped to 1725 lines at ISO 3200 from 2150 lines on average at lower ISOs.The A200 also fared very well in our noise tests, slightly edging out Canon's Rebel XSi from ISO 100 through 800. But even at low
Sony's start into the world of Digital SLRs was quite a slow paced one. The first Sony branded model, the A100, appeared on the scene in June 2006 and it took over a year for it to be joined by a companion, the A700 prosumer model which was launched in September 2007. More recently though Sony has stepped up a gear and launched not one, but three cameras to replace the A100 - the DSLR A200, A300 a

The announcement at the start of this year that Konica Minolta was pulling out of the camera business altogether came as a huge shock to most people in the camera industry and photographic press. Minolta has a pedigree dating back to 1873 and was one of the “Big 5” camera companies, with a long history of innovation and excellence.
As well as its popular range of digital compacts, it was also
Sony has flooded the entry-level dSLR market this year (2008) with three offerings in this category, the A200, A300, and A350. These models share very similar specifications, with resolution, Live View, and the LCDs being the main differences between them. The 14.2-megapixel Alpha 350 or DSLR-A350 is what I consider the "top model" from Sony in this field. Like the A200 we reviewed earlier in the
CONCLUSIONSThe A200 is the second iteration of Sony's entry-level DSLR, and I don't know how good the first one was, but this one isn't bad at all. There are some nice features present for an entry-level camera – notably dust reduction, in-camera stabilization, and the ability to use Sony and Minolta lenses. The A200 should be even more attractive since Sony recently dropped its MSRP with the 18

Both the greatest compliment and greatest criticism you can level at the Alpha 350 is that it's probably the most compact-camera-like DSLR we've ever reviewed. The secondary-sensor live view system is interesting: most modern DSLR designs are saddled with their film legacy and the A350 makes the strongest bid to step out of that shadow. The provision of an exterior switch makes it clear that live v
Sony digital SLR came to the party late, with its first model, Alpha 100 - launched in 2006. His successor, Alpha 200 (A200), is also aimed at entry-level market. First announced in January, Sony recently sent one over for a more in-depth look.

The Alpha DSLR-A350 is the middle child in Sony's 2008 digital SLR lineup. The A350 has a lot to offer for $799 (body only), including image stabilization, the best live view system on the market, responsive performance, class-leading battery life, and sturdy build quality. In terms of photo quality, the A350 has some work to do -- like most of Sony's recent models, there's just too much noise red
It has all the same features as the black Alpha 350, this white, silver and gold limited edition looks less ‘rugged’ than the original. I used to shoot with an ancient Nikon F55 which has about the same colours, but I get the feeling that SLR cameras that are not in the standard black don’t [...]
The Sony Alpha 350 is the step-up model from the Alpha 200, itself the replacement for the original Alpha 100 tested here in August 2006. Significant improvements have been meted out and there is some streamlining in terms of controls as well. However, it is an accomplished model and it is the highest resolution sub-£500 DSLR on the market. Well almost, it’s £519 body only. And so, overall, the
As usual I started off in Auto with Eye-Start AF disabled, in single shot mode, using basic multi-segment metering, automatic AF and the D-Range Optimizer in standard setting; white balance and ISO were auto as well. This is about as Auto as you can get. Once I took a bunch of shots in this fashion it was time to explore the various manual options, all the while using Live View, of course. As note

Having had the opportunity to put a Sony Alpha A350 digital SLR with DT 18-70mm lens to the test over the past couple of weeks, we can only say that its new 14.2 MP sensor is capable of offering very good results. The additional resolution provided allows for the capture of some finer details and the option to crop even further into an image compared to a 10 MP camera like the Nikon D80.Considering the relative difference in mega pixels however, we feel that the resolution advantage offered by the Alpha A350 does not really meet the cost. Taking into account that the new Alpha A300 DSLR is essentially the same camera as the Sony A350 (only real difference being the higher mega pixels on the A350), we would have to recommend the Sony A300 SLR as offering the better value of the two cameras
The Alpha A300 is the middle DSLR in Sony's consumer range. It takes A200's body, 10.2 Megapixel sensor and built-in stabilisation, and equips it with Live View and a screen which tilts for easier framing at high or low angles. It's a compelling package, but the big question is how it compares against the higher-end Alpha A350 - an identical model, other than its higher resolution 14.2 Megapixel sensor. Does the A350 record measurably greater detail, or does the A300 enjoy lower noise levels? Find out in our Sony Alpha DSLR-A300 review where we'll reveal direct comparisons between both Alphas along with Canon's EOS 450D / XSi. And as always, you can check out the highlights in our A300 video tour.more : cameralabs
What's in a name? With DSLRs, not much. Case in point: Sony's new Alpha 350 ($800, street, body only; $900 with 18-70mm f/3.5-5.6 Sony DT lens). Based on quick math, you might guess it's half the camera the Alpha 700 ($1,300, body only) is. But the A350 actually boasts a higher-megapixel (14.2) sensor than the A700, plus several conveniences such as a tilting LCD and a live-view mode with fast autofocusing. Then again, Sony didn't design the A350 to compete against advanced DSLRs such as the A700. It's geared toward photographers coming from digital compacts, who may be drawn to its live view, high megapixel count, compact size, and friendly price. The A350's closest competitors in terms of megapixels, the 14.6MP Pentax K20D and Samsung GX-20, both cost $500 more. The Canon EOS Rebel XSi, p

Sony Alpha A350 Review : Sony announced a stunning amount of three new models for this year; the A200, A300 and the A350, and we haven't heard the last of Sony for this year. At first glance the three models look a lot alike and have similar specifications. Sony want to give the consumer complete freedom of choice and take this opportunity to cover the most important part of the market, the amateur segment, with a series of DLSR cameras. Quite a luxury in the world of photography land, which usually offers only one model per brand in a certain segment. Sony have started their storming. My first impression of the Sony A350 is an excellent one. It is a pleasant camera, quite well-organized and beautifully designed. > Read our full Sony Alpha 350 review.Mark Peters
The resolution of the Alpha A-200 leans it towards Canon EOS400D territory although this camera is older, so age wise, it's more akin to the EOS450D which is a 12Mp model. This similarity in resolution is also shared with the Nikon D60, Pentax K200D and Olympus E-420, however at £345, it's the cheapest of the lot. The Canon comes in at £394 with the 18-55 lens, the Nikon is £449 with the 18-55 VR lens, and the Pentax is body only at the moment, so quite expensive at £469. The Olympus at £379 with the 14-42mm lens is the closest in price.Sony A-200: Modes and featuresThe Alpha A-100 was the original Sony DSLR and the new breed of cameras have been styled on it. The A-200 has a number of cosmetic deffierences which, Sony say, make this camera a lot easier to use.The function dial on top
Sony’s highly desirable 10.2 megapixel Alpha A200 DSLR, successor to Sony’s A100 DSLR, has been named as the ‘Best Entry-level DSLR in Europe’ at the prestigious TIPA (Technical Image Press Association) awards according to a press release just hitting the wires.
Overall, the A700 is a very quick shooting camera that is capable of shooting five frames per second in continuous shooting mode. DPReview had this to say about the A700's performance: “in our continuous shooting test the A700 proved to have a good buffer and fast processor and was limited only by the performance of the storage card.”Shot-to-shot times vary, but they average about .41 seconds between shots when shooting extra fine large JPEGs. To get the best performance, it is recommended that you use Compact Flash cards instead of Sony memory sticks. Sony memory sticks seem to create a longer buffer time between shots.Downloading photos from the A700 to a computer is an exceptionally fast process. Here's what Imaging-Resource had to say about that: “download speed to a host PC was

With its 14-megapixel CCD, flip-up LCD, sensor-shift image stabilizer, and built-in wireless flash controller, the feature-packed Sony Alpha DSLR-A350 seems like a cornucopia of photographic goodness for the budget shopper. And you wouldn't be far off the mark: there's a lot to like in the A350, and I suspect it will garner its share of fans. Unsurprisingly, however, Sony made some compromises so that the A350 could lay claim to the title of highest-resolution budget dSLR. Sony does offer an almost identical 10-megapixel model, the Alpha DSLR-A300, which lists for about $200 less.Sony offers the A350 in three packages: body only, a kit with the SAL-1870 18-70mm f3.5-5.6 lens, which we tested, and a dual-lens kit that adds the SAL-55200 55-200mm f4-5.6 model. The Sony Alpha A200 is largely based on the Alpha A100, Sony's first DSLR, which was largely based on Konica-Minolta's Maxxum 5D. Each step produced a DSLR increasingly Sony-styled. The A200 gives off an even more Sony-like appearance while retaining features pioneered by Minolta, like the Anti-Shake and the Eye-Start sensor. Plus, like all Sony digital SLR cameras, the A200 uses the original Minolta A-mount and is compatible with most Minolta auto-focus lenses. Now that 10 megapixels is the norm among DSLRs, we counted 15 such models, which means that the A200 has many more competitors than the A100 did at the time of its launch. As such, the Sony Alpha A200 features a new image sensor and auto-focus system for improved performance. At the same time, Sony reduced the price of the A200 comp
The Alpha A350 is the top model in Sony's latest triplet of DSLRs. It takes A200's body with built-in stabilisation, swaps the 10.2 Megapixel sensor for one with 14.2 Megapixels, equips it with Live View and hinges the 2.7in screen so it can tilt up or down for easier framing at high or low angles. The Live View also employs a secondary sensor in the viewfinder, which means the normal AF system can work as quickly as normal and there's none of the usual noises or delay. On paper, the A350 looks like being one of the most important DSLRs of 2008, but does it live up to its expectations in practice? Sony has been getting extreme, with the Alpha range kitting out climber Mike Robertson for a camera adventure. This barmy wall-crawler has been scaling buildings across Britain, including the Blackpool Tower, Newport Transporter Bridge and the rotating Glasgow Tower. At an exhibition to show some of Robertson's dizzying pictures, we felt it wise to keep our feet on the ground and checked out some of the new arrivals to the Alpha range: the Alpha DSLR-A700 and Alpha DSLR-A350.The A350 is a 14.2-megapixel SLR. Even in our brief time with the model, we were impressed with the speed and accuracy of the autofocus. Even with live view enabled, there wasn't much delay in snapping, thanks to Sony's method of keeping the mirror up while composing using a secondary mirror. Sony claims 2 frames per s

The Sony DSLR A350 was introduced at the PMA 2008 in Las Vegas, a big event which we visit every year. The Sony Alpha 350 offers Sony’s new “Quick AF Live View” technology so you can frame photos and keep the fast auto-focusing speed common to other live-view systems. IntroductionCamera companies really want you to move from point-and-shoots to D-SLRs. The reason is pretty simple—they make more money. It’s no secret (even though over 35 million digicams will be purchased this year) that prices are dropping. To make up the dollar difference companies are driving down entry-level D-SLR prices--hoping you’ll spend more jack if you’re looking at a fully-featured point-and-shoot like the Canon G9 ($499 USD) or Sony DSC-H9 ($429 USD). D-SLRs are also enticing if you’re a seasoned digicam owner who is sick and tired of slow-acting shutters and even slower shot-to-shot times. Enter the new Sony alpha DSLR-A200, the replacement for the company’s entry-level D-SLR, the –A100. For $699 USD, you get a 10MP digicam, built-in image stabilization, anti-d
Features and DesignThe Sony alpha DSLR-A200 looks like a younger brother to the 40D. It too has a black body with textured finish. Measuring 5.4 x 3.87 x 2.2, it tips the scales at 18.8 ounces without battery and lens, closer to 30 with them. The 40D weighs 37 ounces combined. The main reason for the difference is overall build quality—the A200 is made primarily of plastic compared to the 40D’s magnesium alloy frame. Yes, we know we really should be comparing this camera to the new 12.2-megapixel Canon XSi and 10MP Nikon D60 but they’re not available yet (April and March, respectively). And the 8MP Canon Digital Rebel XTi for $599 USD (body only) is really a graybeard although it’s a solid camera. Back to the A200…Like all D-SLRs, the front is dominated by the lens mount. In this

Canon main rival is, of course, Nikon, which has three consumer-level DSLRs including the 6MP D40, the new 10.1MP D60 and D80, also 10.1MP. It's been almost two years since Konica Minolta pulled out of the photo business and transferred its entire camera division to Sony, and well over a year since the first Sony DSLR (the DSLR-A100) was announced. Two years is a long time in the digital SLR market, but the three years Minolta (latterly Konica Minolta, now Sony) SLR users have been waiting for a high end model to replace the innovative Maxxum (Dynax) 7D must have felt like a lifetime. But, finally, it's here, and it looks very much like the mockup shown earlier in the year.Like the A100, the new camera still wears its Konica Minolta heritage very much on its sleeve, and when you start to look a little more closely at the specification it's obvious that there's still an awful lot of Konica Minolta DNA in the A700. This is hardly surprising given that the circumstances behind its development. And, just as the A100 was obviously based on - and designed to be a successor to - the KM 5D, the A700 follows on from the 7D, and

The digital SLR market is dominated by Canon, with a share of around 47 percent for its eight-model range. In second place is Nikon, who's seven models have around 33 percent of the market. In third place is Sony, with a market share of roughly 6.2 percent. That may not sound like much in numbers, but it has achieved this in just a year and a half and with only one model, the amazingly successful Alpha A100 digital SLR. At the launch event for that camera, a Sony representative stated the company's intention to shoulder its way into the market and challenge the long-established leaders, and like most of the other journalists present I was somewhat sceptical, however I will gladly admit that I was wrong to doubt. Sony has succeeded in leapfrogging industry veterans Pentax, Olympus, Kodak and Sigma, and Nikon must be glancing nervously into the rear-view mirror, because Sony has just launched a new model aimed at the hobbyist and semi-professional photographer, the Alpha A700.more :

November 8, 2007 5pm UPS delivered into my doorstep the item I won from eBay. Opteka Battery Pack Grip for Sony Alpha DSLR-A100 A100K it costed me almost a hundred American dollar to import this in the Philippines. So far I have not tested this monster on field, I bet this brings a big pack [...]
The Alpha A700 is the highly anticipated second DSLR from Sony and the first to be entirely designed by Sony itself. Announced in September 2007 it fills a gap above the original A100 body, targeting serious enthusiasts and semi-pro photographers with higher resolution and more powerful features. The A700 features a jump in resolution to 12.2 Megapixels with a new CMOS sensor, making it the highest resolution Alpha body, and a step-up from existing rival 10 Megapixel DSLRs. The sensor measures the same size as the existing APS-C chip in the A100, so rumours of a 1.25x crop or larger didn't emerge for this particular model. On the upside though, this makes the A700 compatible with the full range of Alpha lenses including DT models, and like the A100 before it, all effectively become stabilised thanks to the built-in - and improved - Super SteadyShot.Like most new DSLRs, Sony's made the jump in screen size to 3in, but fitted the A700 with a super high resolution model sporting 640
When I was on senior high student, I have heard that to honor the past and to struggle for the future is the best thing that can be done by all of us. Although I was not really understand the meaning of the statement, I believe that if we want to develop the next generation technology for everything in this world, it is wise to honor everything that we have known before.
It seems that Sony never
ALPHA MALE? At last Sony has two DSLR cameras, but is the Alpha 700 good enough to convince photographers to switch their allegiance? Angela Nicholson finds outAs the first camera to be launched after the Sony takeover of Konica Minolta, the Sony Alpha 100 arrived under a heavy weight of expectation. Sony had already made it clear that as well as satisfying the requirements of existing Dynax system users, it aimed to win new customers and woo photographers away from other manufacturers. It aims to take the number two slot in DSLR sales and achieve a 25% share of the market. Although it was supported by a collection of compatible accessories, the Alpha 100 was the sole representative of Sony's DSLR market ambitions. Many enthusiast photographers like to invest in a camera that sits within a range, so this was a bit of a handicap. Having a series of cameras underlines a manufacturer's commitment to a system, and it means there are second-body or upgrade options available. Sony has trie
The good: Exceptionally streamlined, comfortable shooting design; broad, functional feature set, including sensor-shift image stabilizer; excellent photo quality; generally fast performance. The bad: A few design quirks; proprietary hot shoe. The bottom line: A top-of-the-line amateur digital SLR camera, the Sony Alpha DSLR-A700 will delight Konica Minolta diehards and makes a great choice if you don't already have a stake in other lens systems. Reviewed by: Lori GruninI know Sony's older, entry-level Alpha DSLR-A100 has its share of fans, but I never got a chance to shoot with it, which made the 12-megapixel Alpha DSLR-A700 my introduction to Sony's take on dSLRs. And I soon found that the unprepossessing, very un-Sony-like design camouflages a sophisticated dSLR that's enjoyable to shoot and can hold its own quite well against models from veteran camera manufacturers such as Canon and Nikon. True, much of the DNA for Sony's dSLRs comes from the company's acquisition of deceased
Hands-on with Sony's second-gen digital SLRThe Alpha a700 is the second digital SLR (single reflex lens) camera Sony has come out with and builds on the interest generated by last year’s Alpha a100. We had a chance to try it out earlier this week.As with its predecessor, the Alpha a700 is a stylish-looking camera that offers a faster shutter speed than its predecessor and is likely to appeal to the semi-professionals and photo enthusiasts Sony is targeting with this model.Using the Alpha a700 we found shooting with it was a straightforward affair and we were taken by its magnesium-alloy body which felt sturdy and rugged. The buttons and media card slots are also protected by weather-resistant silicon seals and the optional VG-C70AM vertical grip makes shooting with the a700 even more comfortable.Sony has been successful in demonstrating that making the move to digital SLR cameras doesn’t have to be as complicated as many beginner photographers fear. For example, Sony has added a q
Sony have been making compact digital cameras for some time…in fact, their ‘Mavica’ was the first camera to digitally record images. But until recently, they had never produced a digital SLR. So in 2005, when they decided it was time to enter this highly specialised market, rather than develop a new camera from scratch, they [...]

Two New Sony Alpha DSLR Bodies!!
This is seriously what I've been waiting for, higher end models for the camera line that I've grown accustomed to. :) According to an interview, unfortunately in Japanese, but available translated from the Dyxum forums , Sony is announcing two new bodies for the Sony Alpha line. One, pictured on the left above, is a midrange model, which is a step up from the A100 consumer grade level camera. Though not exactly a replacement for the 7D(Alpha-7), it will be comparable. The unit on the right is the high end "professional ready" body. From the looks of the chamber above the body, it looks like they are planning for a larger and brighter viewscreen. I hope!!

It’s been over two years since Sony released the Alpha DSLR-A100K (), its first digital single-lens reflex (DSLR) camera. The DSLR-A100K was a good camera based on technology that Sony acquired from Konica Minolta's DSLR division, but two years is a long time in the digital photography universe. Camera technology has changed since the DSLR-A100K’s [...]
