If you like a house, someone else does too
Real estate is funny sometimes. A house sits on the market for weeks or months with no offers and hardly any activity. Then one day an offer does come in. And a second offer immediately follows. The seller who was about to drop the price now has two offers in hand. This is every seller's dream, and while not too common, not impossible. Not too long ago, I showed a home to a buyer in the Hawth

Kristi worked at camp in the kitchen last summer and at the ranch two summers ago. She applied to be a counselor this year, but we convinced her to spend her summer as Jack's camp counselor instead. It's going SO well. He comes to camp with us and eats his meals with us, but spends the rest of the time with Kristi (though, I like to sneak a little quality time in here and there). We have a

Waking Up in Someone Else's Dream
Big dreams. Would it be too presumptuous of me to write that we all have them? Perhaps. I have them. Sure, many of my dreams are seeded in reality or at least in the realms of human possibility, but I have them.In fact, I’ve had dreams for a long time. I’ve even kept record on lists: dream vacations; top 20 places to visit before I’m 50; family activities; etc. Sadly, many of the dreams and

Oh Look, Someone Else Discovered Alberta!
This great nugget is from www.marketwatch.com:"A boom of unprecedented dimensions is sweeping Canada's spectacularly scenic western province of Alberta, the Texas-sized territory with a population of 3 million that is home to a pair of world-class cities -- Calgary (population 1.2 million) and Edmonton (population 1.1 million)." Marshall Loeb, Market WatchIt doesn't matter what the Edmonton property market does in the short term because all the international investors who are coming to Alberta, Canada are looking at the long-term. That is how the "strong hands" do it. Someone else cares about alternate history!
For once, alternate history goes mainstream and isn't about the Civil War or WWII. This time, the Nazis don't win, the Confederates don't win. Mexico wins: (Courtesy of poor targeted advertising)Sure, it's an ad for vodka, but it's also got a map, and I love maps. Now I know next to nothing about the Mexican-American war, where the US gained the land that makes up its current boundaries. I can't point to some specific thing that could have been changed in 1848 to tip the balance in favor of Mexico. There's only one thing that I do know. Within the US, the Democratic party of the time supported the jingoistic war with Mexico and the opposition Whigs, generally more anti-slave, were split over support. When the US won, anti-war Whigs fell out of favor. Among these were Abraham Lincoln

Trying to Work Where Someone Else is Working
I'm all about community and working together, but I think that you have to be ASKED to work with or alongside someone in order for it to be considered networking or community building. If you just try to move into a place where someone else is without considering them or the established business, that is going to be perceived as competition. That is going to be perceived as unfriendly.I realize that there are new people who don't understand that belly dance business doesn't operate like the rest of the world. I made mistakes too when I was new. I hope that people who try to horn in on someone else's established business are doing so because they are new and full of enthusiams and not because they are trying to undermine someone else.

      Meeting myself in someone else
Meeting myself; In someone else By CharlieG What saved me? What helped me to believe that it didn’t have to be how it was? What made me start the incredibly hard, till your arms are trembling, climb back up to that ledge? To sobriety. To an inner peace. To a conscious contact with a God that I didn’t believe in, and hated if He was real. It was when I realized that my pain was not the worst; only a different kind. It wasn’t God, laughing, as He stood there with His foot on my throat. Everybody’s pain is the worst; To them. One night I was feeling sorry for myself and I needed to be reminded of that. And God showed me. I worked at a detox center that I had gone through 6 times in 8 years, Before finally deciding to try the ‘Get a sponsor, work the steps.’ It changed my life. It saved my life. I met a girl at work. She has been to, and through, multiple rehab centers. She cannot put together any length of sobriety. We talked one night. She told me, matter of fact,

Someone Else Got Harassed on the Train for Once
For once, a crazy person at the metro station chose someone other than me to harass. Usually, when a crazy person is on the train, I end up being the person he or she tries to speak to. This time, the victims were the man sitting on the same bench as me and his female companion. Last night, I took the train home after doing some last-minute research for the project that I am filming tomorrow. As I sat on the bench at the U Street station waiting for my train, this man in his late thirties walks about 5 feet away from the bench. He then proceeds to exhale loudly and perfom what looked to be some type of yoga stretch. I was a little sleepy at that point, so I chose to ignore him. The few times I did glance up to see how far away the train was, I saw him doing more silly poses with an idiotic grin on his face. Suddenly, the subway yoga practitioner spoke. He looked at the man sitting next to me on the bench, who was clearly on some kind of date, and said “Excuse me sir. I hate to

Running Your Own Business vs. Working For Someone Else
Running your own business is such a tempting thing that sometimes I think at some point in life everybody must try it. I'm 28 and I've been running my own business for over 8 years. I started working when I was 18 and the very first two years was the time that I worked for someone else.Starting your own business when you are a teenager and your experience is almost zero is a tough thing. The same is true when you are 55, experienced but lacking the energy that you would have at 18.If I had a possibility to go ten years back in my life, I would follow the same track and would start and run my own business. The reward outweighs all difficulties, pressure and risks. We'll talk more about this below. There is a prevailing misunderstanding among people that running your own business is always the best thing. Unfortunately, in life, nothing has only positive sides and running a business is no exception. Let me quickly mention a couple of disadvantages of running your own business.First, yo

I Could Use Someone Else’s Credit Card to Buy My Groceries
My fiancée and I talked about the fact that we can probably use each other’s credit cards to purchase things without getting caught. We realized that many times than not, we aren’t asked to show our IDs when we use our credit cards. We decided to brainstorm where we have bought something using our credit cards without showing our ID and came up with this list. • Anything online • Restaurants • Groceries via self checkout • Gas Stations • Drug store • Convenient stores • Coffee • Tons of entertainment venues * note that this is based in United States since some other countries handle credit cards very differently We concluded that we can live our lives with someone else’s credit card without ever showing our ID. Even without all the online stuff because we can virtually get anything over the internet nowadays, we can still get food, gas, coffee, and have fun with someone else’s credit card without fear! Now, what about the places that asks you for ID? • Lar

Agent sends me someone else’s resume by mistake, cat firmly flung amongst pigeons
Yesterday the agent, through whom I was offered the new contract, got me mixed up with someone else, and sent me someone else’s resume for consideration for a position. This kind of screw-up always puts the cat amongst the pigeons. I had a look at the resume and it wasn’t much good. The guy was a tester of sorts, seemed to be when he couldn’t get a job doing something else. In total he had just under 4 years experience, but only about 7-8 months in the last couple of years. In fact he’s last two positions each lasted between 3-4 months, which is not a long time at all. I’m sure test consultants get to do 3-4 month projects where they go in to a project, have a look around and advise the client on the best way forward. That kind of work could take 3 months. But this guy, going by the job descriptions on his resume, was a basic tester and I can’t see what work can be done on a 3-4 month contract, as it usually takes 3 months before someone is up to s

Scottsdale Teachers union leader glad ex-superintendent is someone else's problem
Eric Kurland has a dozen words of advice for the teachers, students and parents of Kentucky:"This too shall pass. Hang on. But news from there last week hit close to home......Belatedly, Scottsdale's impression of Erwin reached the Kentucky board. Kurland told the Louisville newspaper: "She was like a cancer. She took the life out of our district."Now she'll be in charge of education for all of Kentucky, a big jump from her current suburban Chicago district, which has half as many schools and students as Scottsdale."Nothing surprises me anymore," Kurland told me. "She must have improved greatly. She's an impressive woman to pull it off."By the end of her four years in Scottsdale, Erwin was not a popular woman. In a Scottsdale Republic online poll after she resigned, 12 percent said she had made the district better, while 70 percent

horning in on someone else's gig
I really don't understand why some people think that it's totally okay to horn in on someone else's gig. Examples:1) Showing up at a performance as a dancer (meaning that you have a hip scarf on and are belly dancing between sets) and then proceding to "audition" or make the whole venue aware of the fact that you are a dancer.2) Soliciting for a gig that you know someone else is either working on or is already at.Both scenarios are just low class. If you are a guest at someone else's performance, by all means have fun, but don't be out there looking like you are auditioning. If the house dancer is struggling, dance with her if she asks, but don't show her up if you are better. Don't make it YOUR show. And don't be in performance mode if you are out on the dance floor. It's tacky. Perform when you are being paid to perform and support when you are not.As for trying to get a gig that someone else is going for or is already working, all I have to say to that is when you do that,

SIDE THOUGHT - Difference Between Working for Yourself and Working for Someone Else
Recently, I have decided to work for myself after working for a company for 15 years. People constantly ask me how I like it and what the difference is between working for myself and working for someone else. The main difference is - freedom: Freedom from "department-ation', job titles and job descriptions, schedules, office politics, and red tape. I had flexibility at my previous company, but now I have freedom. The freedom, however, is not free. I miss the paychecks. I miss the resources. I miss delegating. I miss "running it by someone". I miss the co-workers. The freedom, however, is worth the price. I enjoy thinking of an idea and then making it happen without meetings. I enjoy eating lunch at home. I enjoy spending more with my children during the day and working at night. I enjoy wearing black shirt and jeans everyday. I enjoy drive to work when there is no traffic.Again, let me say again - I do miss that paycheck very much. And I am working very hard to not mi
