The Israeli poet Nathan Alterman wrote a famous poem that describes the fallen soldiers of the Independence War as the silver platter on top of which the Jewish State was given to the nation.
To reflect this notion, the Israeli Memorial Day and the Independence celebration are attached.

It seems like the Pentagon thought it was a proper way to respect the soldiers killed in this war by having their remains cremated at the Torbert Funeral Home, which does both humans and animals.Supposedly, the incinerators for humans and animals are separate. But when a soldier's friend or family goes to a place like this and sees signs advertising how they can cremate your dog Skippy or your cat Fluffy, something tells me they might not think this is the most respectful place to cremate those who died in battle.Of course, there is denial from the Pentagon that any soldiers were cremated in the pet incinerator. But, exactly, when was the last time you trusted what the Pentagon has said?I know I'm fairly outraged when I hear this, but where is the outrage from those who wanted this war and

Today, the phenomenon of child labour is one of the burning issues. In its broad sense, child labour means employment of children under the age that is established by the law. This phenomenon is rather versatile and is usually associated with children working in plants, factories, mines, quarries, agriculture or assisting their parents in business.

The above video was made by Ed Frawley, father of Sgt. Jeff Frawley. The younger Frawley had to live in these conditions when returning home from his second deployment in Afghanistan. After 15 months in Iraq, he is stationed at Fort Bragg, North Carolina to live in a barracks with chipped paint, no working showers, and potential lead poisoning. This is how the soldiers get treated by their own country. Does this not once again prove that the government that is so quick to sacrifice the lives of our troops for a pointless cause, deep down, do not give a shit about them? This isn't the first time they've demonstrated this.Aren't conditions better in our nation's prisons? Did no one think they deserved just a little better? Why did it take one soldier's father posting a video on YouTube for an

Human Rights Watch’s investigations at the site found evidence suggesting that an Israeli tank crew fired recklessly or deliberately at the journalist’s team.
“Israeli soldiers did not make sure they were aiming at a military target before firing, and there is evidence suggesting they actually targeted the journalists,” said Joe Stork, Middle East director at Human Rights Watch. “Israel should investigate these deaths and, if crimes were committed, hold to account those responsible.” Fadel Shana’a, a 23-year-old cameraman employed by

The Tradition of Female Soldiers In Indonesia

When we ask about Indonesian national female hero, the first response is Raden Ajeng Kartini. Every 21 April, indeed, we, the Indonesians still celebrate the birth of Kartini as the emancipation day. We rarely talk about Laksamana Keumalahayati, the Acehnese queen or [...]
An organization known as Breaking the Silence will publish tomorrow testimonies from 39 people who served in the Israeli army which paint a picture of a “reign of terror” brought upon the Palestinian civilians living in Hebron and other areas .The testimonials describe random beatings by Israeli soldiers as well as theft, murder and intimidation of the civilian population in an effort by the NGO "to force Israeli society to address the reality which it created".Among the disturbing testimony to be published are accounts of torturing children and their parents by placing loaded pistols in the mouths of children and threatening to kill them as their parents watch in horror. This isn’t going to be a vote for or against the war we find ourselves in over in Iraq, instead I want to show my gratitude for the people over there who are sacrificing everything for this country. I want them to know that I think about them a whole lot, and that they are doing a very admirable job - protecting this country - our beloved United States of America. What greater love can a man or woman have than to lay down his or her life for his brother. Many of you soldiers are coming back to America, your home, in an impaired condition. Some of you aren’t returning at all. I think of your courage and love for America - you all make me proud to be in America - the greatest country of all. I arrived at work this morning to read in the news that a squaddie is to compete to become Miss England. A little dose of inspiration is sometimes in order. Today I had an incredible day. Very busy and very productive. Funny thing I didn't feel that way just a few days ago. Now the agents in my office are working hard, harder than ever before but I see the discouragement, the disappointment and the unknown, you can't miss it's written all over their face. I sometimes have days where I wonder why bother? Who cares? They don't...Why should I?But for some reason I keep plugging away. I keep learning...and fighting and trying new ways. Dozens of Iraq and Afghanistan war veterans publicly testified this weekend about crimes they committed during the course of battle, many of which were prompted by the orders or policies laid down by superior officers. The weekend gathering, called the Winter Soldier Event demonstrated that well-publicized incidents of U.S. brutality, including the Abu Ghraib prison scandal and the massacre of an entire family of Iraqis in the town of Haditha, are not isolated incidents perpetrated by "a few bad apples," as many politicians and military leaders have claimed. They are part of a pattern, the organizers said, of "an increasingly bloody occupation." One testimony:"Apr. 18, 2006 was the date of my first confirmed kill. What have Afghanistan, Burundi, Central African Republic, Congo, Myanmar, Nepal, Somalia, Sudan, Chad, Colombia, Philippines, Sri Lanka and Uganda in common? These are all countries where children are used as soldiers in armed conflicts. The UN security council this week expressed "concern at the widespread and systematic use of rape and other forms of sexual violence against children, in particular girls, in situations of armed conflict" and "called on all parties to take special measures to protect girls and boys from sexual and gender-based violence." A council statement read at the end of a daylong meeting on children and armed conflict expressed "readiness to review the provisions of its resolutions on the issue" — but it made no mention of concrete and targeted measures against viol
Talk about fat and sassy. This is one of the main reasons I wrote my book PTSD: Pathways Through the Secret DoorWASHINGTON (AP) -- Multiple new efforts aimed at stemming suicides in the Army are falling short of their goal: The service anticipates another jump in the annual number of soldiers who killed themselves or tried to, including in the Iraq and Afghanistan war zones. As many as 121 soldiers committed suicide in 2007, an increase of some 20 percent over 2006, according to preliminary figures released Thursday. The number who tried to commit suicide or injured themselves for some other reason jumped six-fold in the last several years - from 350 in 2002 to about 2,100 incidents last year. Officials said an unknown portion of that increase was likely due to use of a new electronic tracking system that is more tho
We are the unwilling, led by the unqualified, doing the unnecessary for the ungrateful—from an engraving on a Vietnam-era Zippo lighter In 1965, journalist Morley Safer followed the United States Marines on a search and destroy mission into Cam Ne. When the Marines he accompanied reached the village, they ordered the civilians there to evacuate their homes—grass huts whose thatched roofs they set ablaze with Zippo lighters. Safer’s report on the event soon aired on CBS and was among the first to paint a harrowing portrait of the War in Vietnam. LBJ responded to the segment furiously, accusing Safer of having “shat on the American flag.” For the first time since World War II, American boys in uniform had been portrayed as murderers instead of liberators. Roadside bombs, also known as Improvised Explosive Devices (IEDs) are a powerful notorious weapon used by guerrilla fighters and terrorists against both organized armies and civilians. The war in Iraq, however, made roadside bombs more "popular" than they have ever been. Even though a huge effort is constantly being made to improve protection, according to Wikipedia, since 2003 and until today
But now, troops gain an average of 10 pounds on deployment, Brooks said, and a recent study that has not yet been released showed that troops’ cholesterol levels are going up after just 12 months in the war zone.
Once again, I'm above average. I gained about fifteen pounds during my deployment. Before I make my point, let me say that some soldiers do take advantage of their time and hit the usually readily accessible weights (some take time to improve oneself mentally or spiritually as well.). The food's actually pretty good and probably healthier than back in the states, although many buy (or, receive from home) junk food.
In addition to the article's reasons ("looking forward" to food, stress, etc. which are all very valid), I'd say, like almost anything else, weight gain during deployment occurs because of a lack of motivation. This may be offensive to some, but here it is:
Being deployed is like being happily married. No, I'm not saying running down "bad guys" is
If you haven’t seen the footage of the military parade at Taiwan’s National Day celebrations on October 10, the following photo is not from the Sydney Gay Mardi Gras. It is in fact, a photo of Taiwanese Navy marines who are trying to show that they are ready to kick mainland butt. Chinese websites describe [...]
If you are by chance reading this post, then it really isn't by chance at all. You were meant to read this for a reason, just don't question it! While I am sitting here posting this, an American Soldier is fighting a war. While you are reading this, an American Soldier is somewhere hiding in a hole. While you are starting to think about what to write, an American Soldier is wanting to come home tonight. Maybe even if just for the Holidays. Last month was the "Pink Ribbon Month" for Breast Cancer Awareness, in which many of us members participated by adding a pink ribbon to our Active Rain photos. With Christmas right around the corner, I'd like to propose this month as the Active Rain's "A
Wicked rotten soldiers in Peru seem to think that live dogs are as good as human shaped dummies when it comes to combat training.
This is one of the sickest things I have seen and I am just in awe of how wicked and rotten someone needs to be to kill a dog thats tied down and completely defenseless.
I can not see how killing a helpless, tied-up puppy helps combat training in any way other than to make the soldiers more heartless than they already are, which seems to be the point here. The point of the training is to make sure that the soldier can kill a helpless individual without discrimination, regret or guilt, and also, weed out the softhearted.
But the point behind these “war games” seems to be the practice of killing. The dog is tied and defenseless, they may as well practice stabbing a tree because it would provide the same self-defense… none.
I have an idea, maybe they should practice the stabbing on each other, at least that would give them a bit of competit
Sen. TrillanesGen. LimSen. Trillanes and Gen. Lim together with the Magdalo soldiers walking out the hearing and march on to Makati Avenue last Thursday then occupied the Manila Peninsula Hotel at this time to voice out their stand. They all have their fighting spirit for the ouster of President Gloria Arroyo. The Manila Peninsula Hotel is surrounded by the Government Police and Army troops to arrest Magdalo soldiers led by Sen. Trillanes and Gen. Lim, there was a gunfire heard at the hotel after the tear gas canister in the hotel lobby. In the end Sen. Trillanes, Gen. Lim and the Magdalo soldiers decided to leave for the sake of the civilians inside the hotel.Sen. Trillanes said “Like soldiers we are going to face it (charges)”. He also said that his conscience will bother him if civilians got hurt during the standoff. “What we did here is our obligation to the people,” he said. The senator added that the public and those who were inside the hotel are living witness to the
