Coffee and Cinnamon Bread... what a glorious combination on a cold, snowy morning. Except I had 4 thick pieces of the bread and now I feel a little sick and I'm of course thinking if I keep eating breads and goodies this weekend I'll be hoping for some Lipovox or something in my stocking Christmas morning. The bread is moist and wonderful... but even more so because I didn't bake it! LOL. My h
It's still very chilly in Victoria. There is a strong wind from the northeast (appropriately referred to as Arctic Outflow) that nearly knocked me over yesterday. With the wind chill, temperatures were around -18.Here are a couple of images from my garden, taken after the snowfall:
We don't have many Christmas traditions in my family, but this is one of them. My mother has always made this shortbread recipe, which she calls Jewish Shortbread. I'm not sure what is Jewish about them, and we aren't Jewish, so I decided to give them my own name: Snowy Shortbread Crescents. This year, I made this recipe for the first time. I'm a bit concerned about how easy they are to make, becau

We spent this cold, snowy, December Saturday morning at a Christmas party, making Gingerbread Houses with all of our friends! Santa Claus also showed up to the party. Ms. Nature? Please stop the wintry madness. We had gotten rid of almost ALL of the snow here, and I wake up to THIS. Yeah, I know, it's pretty. But 10" predicted? It was a bright and beautiful day yesterday, with a sprinkling of snow on the garden which always makes it look pretty. It was quite cold though, so we spent a lazy Saturday indoors feeling snug and warm, admiring the snow from the safety of the kitchen window. It's not exactly blizzard conditions, however; J and I were quite shocked by the insensitivity of the BBC News 24 service yesterday, which showed pictures of the terrible effects of the snow in China and then went straight into a segment of viewers' pictures of the UK's 'extreme weather' as they called it. This consisted of a series of very pretty pictures of the countryside in, at most, a couple of inches of snow; we have a very strange idea of the definition of 'extreme' in this country. My wisdom teeth are making one of their inte

This might be the last of my snowy landscapes for the season. It seems to be getting colder and colder and I might need to paint some warmer weather images to warm up. Generally winters from northern California, southwestern Arizona, the Gulf coast, and coastal South Carolina south throughout its breeding range (A.O.U. 1998). Post-breeding dispersal in late summer and early fall results in birds appearing at inland locations far north of their breeding range.Field Marks: Snowy white plumage, dark legs, black bill, and yellow feet (sometimes called golden slippers). The beauty of this poem lies in its simplicity. Frost wrote this poem in June 1922. He was inspired by the sight of a sunrise to write this poem, after spending the whole night writing a long poem. This is also one of Frost’s favourite among his own poems. In a letter to Lord Louis Untermeyer he called it "my best b

For the past several days, going back to last weekend. There has been a “Parade of storms” moving out of Texas and the Gulf States into the Northeast. Most notably was the damage from ice storms earlier in the week through Oklahoma, Missouri, Kansas, Iowa, Illinois and Nebraska leaving hundreds of thousands of people without power and causing widespread damage. We only had the threat of ice and freezing rain Saturday night into Monday Morning. Since then here in Erie and most of region just saw rain on Tuesday.
These series of storms have been riding along the Jet Stream, which could be considered a very fast moving highway of air that guide and steer storms across the United States and even the world. This “Parade of Storms” is not done yet.
The next storm moves into the lower Great Lakes and the Northeast. We have a Winter Storm Warning for Erie, Crawford Counties in Pennsylvania from 5am to 6pm Thursday as well as Chautauqua County in New York. Winter Weat
Seeking the SacredIt comes to this: Knowing the warmth of your hand Upon my touch-starved desert flesh, The soft caress, palm to palm, Fingers twining one to one, Tracing each knuckle bend, each milky nail. I wake remembering a kiss Never given nor received, Yet always offered: My sacrificial lips swollen with the rush Of amorous blood clamoring release. The salty fruit of your skin Lingers upon my tongue's memory. I know the musky tastings Of your dark and secret places, Revealed in frantic tactile urges Pressing, wordless, forward. I will never hold you, But you are mine: Closer than twins Born one atop the other. You have sealed your sacred self Whole within my skin; The profane becomes Holy, and I worship Needing no other church.
About 20 minutes ago the snow started to fall... it's the beginning of what is supposed to be 3-6 inches. Not too much, but enough to cover everything in white and make it beautiful.
I found this photo in my files that I took a couple weeks ago out my kitchen window. Today when I spied it while browsing through my pictures I smiled. Why?
Because I was thinking about the places I've been on

In this photo you can see sunbeams coming up from a mountain. It is the only time I have seen sunbeams shine the “wrong” way and I was wondering what was hiding behind those mountains.
As you can see by all the snow in the mountain, this picture was taken back in January (actually 3 days after I got my sweet camera) and at this time of the year we have no sun up here in northern Norway.
The days are not totally dark (referred to as Polar night) as we have twilight in the middle of the day, but the sun is gone for several months.
When the sun comes back in the end of January we use to celebrate and think about warmer times that includes midnight sun.
Do you think you could live in a place where there is no sunshine for several months?

Snowy Mountains Christmas Cookies
2 ounces bittersweet chocolates, chopped
1 cup butter, softened
1/2 cup instant dissolving (fruit/berry) sugar
1 teaspoon vanilla
2 cup all purpose flour
1 pinch salt
1 cup finely chopped Toblerone bar
1 cup of 1/2″ chunks of Toblerone bar
1 cup powdered sugar
Preheat oven to 300 F. In heatproof bowl over saucepan of hot (not boiling) water, melt chocolate, stirring occasionally. Remove from heat and let cool.
Meanwhile, in bowl, beat butter with sugar until fluffy. Stir in chocolate and vanilla. Add flour and salt; stir until blended. Mix in 1 cup fineley chopped Toblerone bar. Form into 1 1/2″ balls and place on cookie sheets lined with parchment paper. Press a 1/2″ chunch of Toblerone bar into the top of each cookie.
Bake 30 minutes or until firm to the touch. Remove from oven and let cool for 2 minutes, then remove to wire racks to cool completely. Sift powdered sugar on top of the cookies to create “snow.”

Another picture I took back in February. At this time of the year the sun is only shining for a hour or two and in this photo the sun has disappeared below the horizon. The golden reflections are coming from sunshine higher up in the snow filled mountains. It was a very beautiful sight.

The snowy owl study is finished:The amount of barring seems to vary alot on these owls, from almost pure white in the males to heavily marked in the youngsters and females. (This one was sort of looking over its shoulder, but I am not sure which it was). The eyes are mesmerising - who'd be a mouse? I think this owl will be available as prints in the near future, along with the eagle owl. More owls to follow... Next up, apart from the paintings for the bird book, will be some flowers in watercolour...seems like a while since I did any, so it will make a nice change!
Another owl study in progress - this time a snowy (or as any self respecting child will tell you, a Hedwig). The basics are in, and am just beginning to get down to some detail. I used mainly verithin pencils again for this one.

We tried to go see Good Shepard, but they hadn't gotten the movie in, because of the storm. We saw The

I'm not blogging during working hours. So there.
